Unfortunately the killer of E3 is the same one that killed Blockbuster, Sears and even Toys R Us… the internet. With gaming companies now showcasing their stuff like Nintendo’ Direct videos, E3 has become irrelevant and its sad as E3 was an amazing experience for many gaming fans who had a chance to look at new games.

1 - When a company try to sell a ps2 game from 2001 at full price they cant blame the community for the game not selling well, a re-release of a classic game should not be a thermometer indicating that a series is worth it to come back or not, a re-release should be just a celebration, nothing more. 2 - What rappens a lot these days is, sometimes a lot of companies dont have faith on a sequence for whatever reason, so they give it a cheap budget and neglect the development of a new game, and then the game releases like shit and they dont seem to understand that the game flopped because it was bad, because THEY maked it bad, the blame is not on the community, or the franchise. 3 - For exemple, generes like 3D-Platforms are said to be dead on an era, but we have Nintendo selling Super Mario games to this day and making ruge success with it, because unlike the number 2 scenario, they DONT NEGLECT THE GAMES, they are not afraid to invest a Platform game and that`s why they keep selling it, because it`s good, simple as that.

there's a term in marketing, i think it's called ditloc vs VoC. Essentially, it means that what people say they want and what they actually buy is polar opposite. in addition to what you're talking about another example: People will say they hate spotify and they wanna support artist. but listeners and artists alike use Spotify. Or another one, every gamer says they hate micro transactions yet it's the main ways game makes money cause gamers buy buy buy.

I might have enjoyed the hell out of Gex when I was between the ages of 6 and 13 I might think that the best pro wrestling games were No Mercy for N64 and Smack Down for PS1 original Tony Hawk Pro Skater trilogy and the Underground series were a great set of games for the generation of consoles they were on instead of remake make a game inspired by it but make it its own thing

Industry practices have NEVER been in the interest of the consumer. Just because you weren't aware of all the ways they screwed you over, doesn't mean it didn't happen. Corporations have always done their best to screw over consumers in the name of more profit. Your childhood was a not magical era for the gaming industry. Nor was mine. That era does not exist.

I ever saw Gex as a beloved franchise. I never played it but I am surprised there is nostalgia for it. The big mascots of that time besides Mario and Sonic were Spyro, Crash, Donkey Kong. I would expect Croc to come back before Gex. Here’s the thing with Nostalgia: we remember the best of the era. They are objectively great games and timeless. Modern Gaming does not seem as fun, but the complaints mainly apply to AAA games. Many titles are released incomplete, there are micro transactions where they don’t belong, a lot of corporate oversight stifles creativity and many of them have a similar play style. They also rely on the same formulas created years ago. When gaming made the shift from 8 but to 16 bit, from 2D to 3D, from offline to online, the way we played games fundamentally changed. It was experimental and exhilarating, but we focus on the best of the best. With the focus now on resolution and fidelity, the way we play has not changed all that much.VR isn’t there yet. I personally have focused on indie and AA gaming. Even if it’s on the janky side, I find a lot of creativity and experimentation for a lower price. Today is the best time to be a gamer, especially when you factor in emulation for the old stuff. But AAA gaming does need a shot in the arm. Maybe AI can reduce the cost and time of development, which will allow the devs more flexibility.

I fundamentally disagree with the idea that story < gameplay. Story contextualizes player actions. A good story can save or elevate core gameplay mechanics. However, a bad story can detract so heavily from the overall experience that the player is completely disinterested in moving on. Why just recently, Dragon's Dogma 2's main critique outside of performance issues from a lot of reviewers was that both endings (normal and true ending) did not give them any closure because they didn't know what the hell was going on. Part of this was due to poor localization. Due to this, even though DD2 has some of the best ARPG combat in modern gaming, most western gamers found the narrative aimless and quickly ran out of motivation to even progress further to obtain the true ending. Imagine if the Witcher series was poorly written. Right now, a lot of KZbin reviewers are dissecting the flaws of Witcher 3's gameplay loop and hack-n-slash combat. But guess what? Most will never critique its story under a negative lens. Silent Hill 2 may have had tank mechanics but every video essayist and their mom regurgitates James's story like they were actual psychologists. While maybe this isn't the overall message being conveyed here, the video expresses a bias against anyone who prefers story and narrative, to the point of superseding gameplay, rather than accepting these are two very different philosophies around critiquing games. I absolutely disagree with the notion that game reviewers who preferred even the first Hellblade only prefer watching movies or shows and devalue gameplay experience. Its a complete mischaracterization of the developer's intentions with trying to give the player the perspective of someone who experiences auditory and visual hallucinations from schizophrenia. While Hellblade 2 may fail at the execution, other games have also set-out to convey themes within the short scope of videogames as an immersive medium such as INDIKA. If I were to follow your critique on any games that went outside the norm and tried to experiment, we wouldn't have short, punctuated experiences that expand our understanding of the human condition. That story - the conundrums a Christian nun would feel back-when in a restrictive environment - couldn't be conveyed in a different way without losing its identity. It couldn't be conveyed as a movie. Just like how Hellblade's take on schizophrenia could never be conveyed as a movie because theatres full of people would cheapen the deeply personal experience of being tormented by paracusias. That's the power of stories over gameplay in my mind. This does not invalidate either/or approach.

Your style reminds me of my angry forum posts 10-14 years ago targeting the back-then emerging trend of barely interactive movie-games that got countless awards, before I kinda gave up on internet discussion, it's really endearing. People were like "Telltales's The Walking Dead is a piece of art, video games are growing up!" and I was basically out there hammering these fools as hard as I could, defending video games as an actual medium as much as I could, and also recommending people the then fairly unknown little title called Dark Souls, as a true example of a forward thinking proper video game, we all know how influential that game turned out to be and how utterly irrelevant tripe like The Walking Dead and Heavy Rain turned out to be. The notion seemed to be that for video games to "grow up" and "become art", they'd need to superficially LOOK like other art, and that has always made my blood boil. I may not care anymore, but keep up the good fight brother, you're on the right side.

I can play a game that has average to what some would call bad gameplay if it has an amazing story vs a game that's just straight gameplay that is boring to me because I don't have a reason to care about that game I need more than just "it's fun"..Mafia lll has some of the most average gameplay but I love that game because of the story same with Catherine the gameplay is just walking around a bar at night and moving boxes but that story is so good it makes you play it.

Oh yeah, i remember your voice! Which reminded me, i think there is an aspect of gaming which is hilariously praised or criticized when it shouldnt even count as a feature in a game and that's DEI. With Mojo being so big i wonder if they ever made you focus on that in your reviews from time to time. Going back to the game in question I honestly believe, because Hellblade 2 took so long to have its production finished, that they tried to balance and remove a lot of DEI from the game because of the backlash it had been getting when employed in both movies and games. And i believe that's the case because the story itself was a standard hero's journey and didn't bother using buzzwords or minorities in a game set in a nordic area (other than the tough lady that shows up later in the game i guess).. at the same time, everything was indeed so underwhelming and the game was so short there is no good explanation for it have taken so long to be finished. The adoption of DEI was all the rage throughout the years the game was in development and the protagonist is pretty much a strong boss girl and despite all that the game missed to prop those things up as you would expect from big games released just a few years ago.

Some games are about "feelings" like Gone Home or Journey so I don't have a problem with this at all. If there's a failure in games criticism, it's that they feel more and more like personal blogs, when they are representing an entire publication. I don't really care what the reviewer thought of it personally. Do the mechanics succeed at what they are going for? I do agree that reviews are getting too subjective, and there should be more consideration for what type of gamer is going to like something. (Stop telling me to play Elden Ring, I'm not into FromSoftware). Other problems include pandering to the audience (giving games high scores so they don't make their readers angry), overall bias (rose-tinted glasses on anything from "favorite" developers), and rushed reviews so they meet their deadlines by launch. (This plagues fighting games, who are constantly getting high marks they don't deserve because if you spend any amount of time with them is when the flaws really start to show. Monetization has put a HUGE damper on Mortal Kombat 1, Street fighter 6, and Tekken 8)

My opinion is paid reviewers(IGN, GameSpot) and KZbin reviewers are generally scared of scoring a highly anticipated AAA game low. There's too much hype behind it for you to be the only one giving it less than a perfect score. So when a major AAA drops, it's just par for the course to give it a high score, regardless if you really think that high score is legit valid or not.

It's like people memory hole the Gamespot/Kane and Lynch controversy that happened in 2007. Access journalism with monetary insensitive is a real thing in the industry.

PR do give VERY preferential treatment to outlets who make their clients look good though and I can attest to this having worked in the industry for a long time. Smaller outlets, such as KZbin channels who are openly and loudly critical of a publisher's business practices are purposefully left out of any and all pre-release cycles and are essentially blacklisted from access to any "partner events". The same for publishers only inviting "preferred partners" to PR events, there is an understanding that if you keep them sweet then you keep your access and the trappings that go with it to write your pieces and/or make your videos with. It's not payola but it is essentially mutual back scratching, same as PR in any other industry. Cool video though and keep up the good work. ✌🏻
