BTW--In california folks 70+ no longer have to take the written exam as of Oct. 1st 2024. 👍

But when I went online and navigated the process to make an online appointment, I ended up on a page with only options for how I wanted to take the test and an option to complete an e-course instead. There is no option for seniors to skip any form of testing. Do these government programmers test their work?

Am 73 too and I took it last April. It’s not a small amount, it’s the DMV Handbook and you need to review all that was in it. But first you need to pass the vision test. Then when you’re ready go to the driver test area to take the written test through on-line, it’s multiple questions and you’re only allowed 3 wrongs out of 20, the system gives you up to three tries if you fail. That’s it, no driving test, and it’s hood every 5 years. This new rule of thumb”no test if your driving record is clean is really great for seniors.

I think for seniors, they should be doing a driving test not a written test. Because as we age, our minds may remain sharp, but our reaction times decreases. These are the things that should be tested for seniors. Fun fact. In the future, all driving tests will be done in simulation modules just like pilots do.

It is still required. I had no tickets but had to take the written test. I passed but it was very sneaky, worded in a way to try to trick you. One of the questions was is it ever legal for an underage person to have alcoholic beverages in the vehicle. The answer is yes if the underage person is a sales rep for the alcoholic beverages. I remembered it from reading the manual. Not sure why I need to know that to be a safe driver. Just shows you how sneaky they are. Study the manual or they will trick you. Write the DMV head a note & tell him how you feel about this sneaky test.

Had to take mine last year to renew since I was 74. Clean driver's record with no accidents or tickets. I was expecting questions about which lane do you turn into on a right turn or when on the on-ramp of a freeway… Instead I had a bunch of questions like "If you are pulled over for speeding and you have drugs and guns in the car and you run away from the police, what is the penalty?? (a.b.c.or d.) and I'm thinking why do I have to know that? Isn't that for a judge to tell you and besides, I'm 74 years old. I am sorry to say I had to take the written three times to pass it. Luckily I got the third one correctly and got my license, but those questions are killers. If anyone old is studying for the test, don't skip over the penalty passages in the driver's manual, even if you feel they will never apply to you.

Recently renewed my Drivers License. I'm 73. There was a training & test online. You would study a small amount and then get asked question on what you just read. It's actually a practical knowledge test of what you know for everyday driving. When I went to the DMV the worst part was finding a parking space outside. Make sure you make an appointment online or it will take forever. Got to the DMV, checked in, spoke to one person then got my picture taken and I was done. So much better. It will tell you to take the email you get after taking the training/test online. Make sure you take that with you.
