@@ivstov have you had much trouble with the 582? I’ve heard a lot of mixed things regarding that engine. I recently took the rotax class at sun in fun to learn a bit more about them. I’m pretty sold on Viking for my build though. I grew up building Hondas and performance Hondas although never owned one lol. But they are almost bullet proof. I’d like to get an ultralight with a rotax. They look like a blast to cruise around in.

I would never go 2stroke rotax again. EVER! 912s have proven to be more reliable, but the 582 is an engine that can go anytime, without warning. Apparently. I can say in my 29 yeares of flying recreational aircraft, I have been in similar situations 3 times, but was able to re starth the engine 2 times, and return to my base to do trouble shooting/diagnostics. The other time I was on floats and just landed on the ocean that was below me. That plane is flying again with another engine.

The decision to go around on short final for a chosen field, with a worsening engine problem, is very questionable and isn't easy. I've done that twice in 55 years of flying and luckily got away with it. Once was realising that I would run into the upwind fence and the next time was to avoid the possibility of running off a precipice in mountainous terrain. Luck plays a big part!

Agreed, but imagine trying to land because you have doubt the integrity of your engine and then have to make a decision not to!!! You had better go buy a lottery ticket right now, because you sir are one lucky lucky man!

I wasn't sure about it at the time. The first pass with the go around was me not believing there is an actual serious problem. I was trying to land to inspect.( Got blown off the road, you can see and hear the left tire striking the chunks of rocks in the side.) Once went back up, I was heading to the closes airfield. It wasn't running rough it was just changing RPM. The precautionary landing was just to inspect it and try to figure what was wrong with it. It ended up being a seized bearing. Had I Landed not sure if I would have know there is a problem., I would probably have started and taken off. 🤷🏼‍♂️ There are always things you can change after it goes sideways. I always thought that it happens so rare that it will never happen to me. One of my lessons learned: always fly it like it's going to fail. Always within gliding distance...... always!

Sometimes every single training protocol says no, but the gut says yes and it works out. A famous example of this is the F-15 that flew home on one wing. The pilot was trained to recover from a flat spin by nosing down and letting off power. But when it was induced after a missile strike, the pilot instead went with a gut feeling to just light the afterburners. He then proceeded to land what can only be described as 2/3 of an aircraft. His training was to eject when he failed to recover from the spin through normal methods
@tommissouri4871
@tommissouri4871 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, the initial spin recovery demonstration for flight acceptance of the original prototype F-15A planes by McDonnell was to apply throttle and fly out of the spin. Even the tail down stall could be recovered by simply applying throttles. The plane would stop falling tailfirst and begin climbing straight up. That Israeli pilot did exactly what he needed to do. Oh, and it was not a missile strike, he collided with another aircraft that took off his wing and the other aircraft crashed. That pilot ejected.

I would never want to fly with this guy. Way too casual. Fails to recognize a serious emergency. I almost spit my coffee when he said he is making the decision to climb out and go around with a failing engine...he was already down. A little to the side but easily correctable. By climbing out, predictably having the engine die, he put many lives on the ground potentially at risk. Had he crashed and burned, every analyst would be saying, why the heck did this @*&(* climb out and try to go around. Epically bad decision. He got lucky...this time. It makes me wonder what else he says: "It's just a little wind shear- we can make it!" "It's just a little ice on the wings- no worries." "Bad storm with 500 ceilings, 50mph winds and lightening- while VFR- no problem." "A little heavy at takeoff- I don't see a problem" and my favorite... "ENGINE IS ALMOST DEAD- I am already ON THE GROUND but lets play some games and dance with the devil- caution to the wind, YOLO- I'm gonna go ahead and climb out and try to go around."

@@ivstov I was the most constructive actually. If keeping it real hurts your feelings, and you don't want to learn from your mistakes get out of the cockpit. YOU PUT PEOPLES LIVES AT RISK- will you admit that? Everyone knows this and many pilots have commented the same. If your pride won't allow you to admit that, you live in denial my friend and you should really stick to simulators. No need to curse at me either. That speaks to your lack of maturity. Your continued lack of good judgement clearly extends beyond the cockpit. What pilot takes off with a failing motor? No good one- that is for sure. That is beyond flight training 101. I guess not everyone can be an ace. Honestly, I just think it's your personality. You are way too casual when you should be laser focused- and you probably over react when you should be calm. I've seen your type before. I would NEVER want to fly with you. MS Simulator 2022- you should check it out. END.

As others have commented, I hope you can internalize this as a debrief in order to make better decisions in the future. You got very licky after a series of poor decisions. I don’t mean to armchair quarterback your video but a debrief should be critical. If you have a known engine problem you should not sacrifice your altitude for any reason other than committing to land. A low pass could have been deadly. Once committed to land, land. Don’t go around because it wasn’t perfect. There was a high likelihood of your engine failing during your go around. Again, deadly. Changing your landing spot at the last second to a narrow road with deep ditches on both sides when your last attempt blew you off the road, not good. You are still alive because of luck or God or whatever but it is not because of the decisions you made. It’s a great video and thanks for sharing but for the sake of your passengers you should really get some training on ADM and focus on risk mitigation.

Part of maintaining the motor better is carefully selecting your engine builder. Checking it and rechecking that it is operating within all parameters. When I rebuild a motor I am meticulous. Checking that the oil pressure and operating temperatures are correct is also critical.
