QUIZ 1what do you understand by the term mimesis Mimesis is a critical and philosophical term. It can mean to imitate, represent or even mimic, as a concept it tries to make sense of representational art and its values. Symbolism might be mimesis? 2 what advice on play acting does Shakespeare's hamlet give to the players? Basically he tells them not to be too tame, don't be too subtle and underact, but let your 'own discretion' (Common Sense) be your guide. Suit the action to the word, the word to the action. 3 what is the Dionysian and what this Aristotle mean by catharsis? Dionysian works relate to the sensual and emotional aspects of the audience. Whereas Cathartic works relate to our sympathy and empathy. The one arouses the desire such as does the Dionysus, in that its sensual almost orgiastic. But the Cathartic like the medical purgative uses the terror and tragedy to bring out and purge out the fears of the audience. Cathartic works might have been the first psychological therapy actually, if you think about it.

Assignment Give the endings or closures tell how these novels end how these novels attain a sense of closure in other words, give the last few lines the last couple of lines of: 1 Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte "My Master", he says, "has forewarned me daily He announces more distinctly 'surely I come quickly', and hourly I more eagerly repond 'Amen even so come Lord Jesus'" These are ST John River's words in his letter to Jane. The reader would have had to follow each person of whom she wrote throughout the whole book. It appears that John went into India as an Evangelist. 2 Middlemarch by George Elliot "But the effect of her being upon those who were around her was incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and the things that are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number of those who lived faithfully a hidden life, and the rest in unvisited tombs." This may be the commentary on the ordinaryness of this marriage at a time when status was everything. 3 Great Expectations by Charles Dickens I took her hand in mine and we went out ofthe ruined place; and as the morning mists had risen long ago when I first left the Forge, so, the vening mists were rising now, and in all the broad expanse of tranquil light they showed to me, I saw no shadow of another parting from her. Pip gets his girl. The old woman whose dress and person became that which took the house down, is long gone. The cold Estella has had a horrible marriage to a man who was as heartless as she but more brutal. She now can look at Pip as he had always wanted her to, for himself. But Pip had become something better, and now life will be good. Hand in hand with no strings attached they walk. 4 Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin With the Gardiners they had always been on the intimate terms. Darcy, as well as Elizabeth, really loved them; and they were both ever sensitive of the warmest gratitude towards the persons who, by bringing her into Derbyshire had been the means of uniting them.---Finis. This is an older literature and it has the closure. In this novel of acceptable manners of the period and the "drama" that goes with it, we find all these romances. In the end as we read it here Darcy has spurned his arranged marriage for a marriage of the heart. The Gardiners had brought Elizabeth to Derbyshire where Darcy had first laid eyes and heart upon her. Had they not, this happy couple would have never met. 5 Frankenstein by Mary Shelly "But soon", he cried with sad and solemn enthusiasm "I shall die and what I now feel be no longer felt. Soon these burning miseries will be extinct. I shall ascend my funeral pile triumphantly, and exult in the agony of the torturing flames. The light of that conflagration will fade away and my ashes will be swept into sea by the winds. My spirit will sleep in peace; or, if it thinks, it will not surely think thus. Farewell" He sprung from the cabin window as he said this, upon the ice raft which lay close to the vessel. He was soon borne away by the waves, and lost in darkness and distance. The End Again we have a closure. It is Frankenstein the Creature whose Creator has died. Heartbroken and unsatisfied because in not getting a female "frankenstien" from his creator he had been bent on destroying "Victor". So it is his words we read. 6 The Sun Also Rises by Earnest Hemingway Ahead was a mounted policeman in khakidirecting traffic. He raised his baton. The car suddenly slowed pressing Brett against me. "Yes", I said "isnt it pretty to think so?" The End This is one more that has the End in its pages. Thus providing closure. With his lady Brett whom he cannot engage in intercourse with due to a war wound. The line alludes to the idea that they wished they could be "together" satisfyingly but alas. Thus it is "pretty to think so".

Assigment Name the Allusions for the Following Titles 1 For Whom the Bell Tolls (Hemingway) The book's title is taken from the metaphysical poet John Donne. His series of meditations and prayers on health, pain, and sickness "Devotions upon Emergent Occasions"(1624), specifically Meditation 27. 2 Far from the Madding Crowd (Hardy) The Bible was what Hardy alluded to alongside Greek Mythology. For example, Hardy describes his character Bathsheba, after she kisses Troy, as experiencing a kind of shock similar to Moses' amazement after God gives him a command. 3 Tender is The Night (Fitzgerald) He frequently alludes to battlefields, monuments, the millions dead, and millions more left wounded and recovering. 4 Of Human Bondage (Somerset Maugham) alludes to different pieces of both fiction and non-fiction literature, also allusions to painters, especially of expressionism are present as well. The title is borrowed from Spinoza's Ethics, part IV “Of Human Bondage, or the Strength of the Emotions.” 5 A Passage To India (Forster) The title refers to American poet Walt Whitman's poem "A Passage to India." Forster's piece is a contrast to Witman's.

Seeing as I cant seem to access this course correctly I will simply input the quiz answers here 1 define irony In literature its seen as the "plot twist" or the contrast between the expectation of a given situation and the reality of the actual outcome. 2 question to give an example of allegory. It is said the The Song Of Solomon is allegorical. Couched in very erotic terminology this book is actually sort of symbolic for the process of Sanctification in Christendom or in Judaism. But the song was also written of a couple. It is believed that this is Solomon and Abishag, the Shunamite, hence the play on words of Shulamite. 3 who are the critics associated with the Frankfurt School 1 Jürgen Habermas. 2 Claus Offe. 3 Axel Honneth. 4 Oskar Negt. 5 Alfred Schmidt. 6 Albrecht Wellmer. 7 Hans-Jürgen Krahl. 4 who is the author of "reliance on self fashioning from more to Shakespeare" Stephen Greenblatt By the way the transcripts are still a nightmare to read as the speaker's accent makes the names harder to understand. I end up having to look up names on the internet.

Although the course is very promising. The transcript is not good. I was slowed down by both instructor accent which was compounded by poor transcription. I ended up looking up many names as in de Sausser is not sorcerer. For english speaking audiences someone needs to redo the transcript so that proper note taking can take place. Only through the transcripts being correct will english and especially american audiences truly understand her through her accent. Otherwise a promising study.

Dear Ma'am, The video is quite nice, however please note that the information about Mary Wollstonecraft is incorrect and needs review. The writer of A Vindication of the rights of woman is Mary Wollstonecraft who is the wife of William Godwin, their daughter is Mary Shelley who is the writer of Frankenstein. Thank you.

What is the difference between literary theory and literary criticism? This basic question has not been addressed in this video. How can anyone talk about literary theory and literary criticism without explaining what it is.

With all due respect for your research on the subject; this is one problem with most of the Indian content on Literature, that they are more factual than concept based. From my POV one should first give a simple explanation of the topic at hand and later on move gradually with the factual info. Ps- Super boring lecture, mostly due to the lesson's construct.
