what battery would you pair with that motor?
@NextLevelFishingTV2 күн бұрын
If you are on a budget, go Lead 12v 100Ah (FYI they are heavy) marine deep cycle (Walmart/Autozone etc). If you want to use lithium ion, go Z-PRO 12V 100ah (Expensive but very light).

Good information. I was out at the helipad June 8th. Breakers were at about 3 feet. I was on an autopilot using NK300 motor. No problems getting out. I was thrown out of kayak between 2nd and 3rd sandbar coming back. My first time offshore with nk300. Didn't flip kayak. I just got thrown forward and out. I obviously have better control with1 to 2 foot waves. I'm not a fan of the square back on my Autopilot.
@NextLevelFishingTVАй бұрын
The Autopilot is an amazing kayak especially for tournaments, but it doesn’t belong in the surf.

For those who prefer calm surf settings, this is my reverse surf entry technique. Please keep in mind that once waves get to a certain peak, this technique becomes irrelevant.

How many volts you have remaining is a very inaccurate metric for consumption. It should be measured in amp hours. Voltage will remain pretty constant until it's dead. Lithium batteries are different than lead acid.

I’ve never eaten redfish. What does it compare to taste and texture wise?
@NextLevelFishingTVАй бұрын
Very good eating. Pretty firm fish that doesn’t flake easy so you can do quite a bit with it. Pretty mild-sweet flavored fish.

Bro I have a 60amp battery and I’ve done 9 miles and never run out and I do use speed 10 to go 1-2 miles from point to point. I’ve also gone 2 days in a row without having to charge and never ran out and you can buy a lithium for $300. It is faster and lighter as well so big mistake

Can someone confirm that this new version of the Old Town Sportsman does not have spotlock? For years I've been told spotlock was a game changer.
@NextLevelFishingTV2 ай бұрын
This version does not. Only the Sportsman “Autopilot” has spot-lock. Anything ePDL is simply propulsion assist much like an e-bike.

Can you put the E-pdl on one that had a normal PDL drive?
@NextLevelFishingTV3 ай бұрын
No you can’t. The wiring, and magnetic safety switches would pose a problem, plus I’m sure the molding might be slightly different.

Your recommendation to take off the prop and rinse the shaft and shear pin works great. I have a 2019 Sporstman PDL 120 and fish the coastal waters of Maine. The original prop shear pin rusted and left me paddling back with my hand paddle in the fall of 2020. I was close to shore and didn't feel like changing the pin on the water. In December of 2020, Old Town sent me new and much improved prop shear pins. I have been out on 167 kayak outings with my PDL the past three years and all I have done to combat that salt water is fill a 5 gallon bucket with my fresh well water and dunk the prop a couple of times as soon as I get home. Works great with no corrosion seen, easier than taking off that prop everytime.

Never had the guts to try that... I've fished in 35 mph winds on lakes and had to deal with someone who didn't understand wakes from a power boat. But those are choppy in nature as compared to something rolling through over and over. I totally "felt" the hips comment you made though. I can remember fishing KATS at Lake Fayette in high winds - they almost called off the event. They were coming from the direction of the power plant so there were no trees to block the wind. I decided to head across the lake toward the power plant and was trolling as I went. Caught a nice bass and while I was taking him off some really big waves came through broadside and the only thing I remember is keeping my body in the center and letting my hips do all the work. I unhooked that bass in record time. A lot of people capsized that day and I'll say a lot the reason I didn't was because of my Big Tuna. But moving the hips to follow and keep the center of gravity in the right place had a lot to do with it.

Okay, it's absolutely amazing that most of the strategies you landed upon by trial and error, are almost EXACTLY what was taught by the US Coast Guard Motor Lifeboat / Surfman schools during my days in the USCG many decades ago. Watch videos of the USCG training surfmen at Cape Disappointment, WA, and you'll see motorlifeboats employing many of the same strategies you are using, but on a much larger scale. Good job!
