Thanks so much for posting this! Could you maybe explain more about what it was like to get put to sleep? This is the part that freaks me out!! Like, what does it feel like? How do they do it? What does it feel like when they put the stuff in, like do you get sleepy or is more like wide awake to instantly out? Could you have stayed awake if you would have tried or is it impossible? Haha. Basically whatever you remember about that part would be helpful. Thanks so much!

I’m an international student who will do my mandatory service after completing my freshman year at state school known for business (I’m a finance major) I’ll take two years off to serve in my home country, but I’ll serve at US military base with US army. I can only apply to schools where offer need blind policy for international students like me (like harvard, yale, princeton, brown, or dartmouth) because my mom is fighting cancer and our family’s had financial struggles. Would they still prefer this kind of non traditional background even tho I’m technically not a US veteran? (I heard princeton especially prefers veterans)

This is me, i’m a third year wanting to transfer from ucsd to NYU. And it feels like the world has crumbled down on me more times than I am proud to admit. it feels so challenging and stressful. i’ve been wanting transfer since my first year which is a while ago. but i surpressed it for so long, thinking that i should always give my current school and circumstance multiple chances. however, after, I was getting all straight A’s in my first year. unfortunately, now I have failed 8 of my most subject classes in 2 semesters in a row, I know somethings of disconnect here, and I always know i’m better than this. I don’t feel like myself at all. And it’s 99.9% not because of the school. it’s just me. I don’t think it’s the right fit for me. the first rejection letter i had from nyu in 2022, scared me…I felt alone, uncertain , and honestly my failure in academics have brought me to years of severe depression and su1c1d4l attempts, although this is dark. but where i am in life got me pulling my hair out. can you help me in a more (depth way) in my process? I genuinely need a mentor and real guidance, whom i can contact and feel okay sharing personal things with. Let me know if you are willing to help and converse in depth about this in between (i assume immensely busy time)… i loved your content for years, but I have trouble in applying and implementing all your knowledge to execution, determining my future. Application deadline’s ending in 14 days. I hope you get this message and receive it well. Thank you, mary. My Best Regards, Fira 🤍that’s my name

Is the transfer process still applicable for students like me (outside of US, especially the school is not partnered with NYU)?

Hi! Thanks so, so much for this video!! My situation is similar, as I didn't apply anywhere else because I got into JHU early. JHU is great, but I was always upset I didn't go for my dream, Yale. Worst advice I've ever heard. 26 year olds should not worry about freezing eggs. Quantity rapidly decreases after birth. You have the most in utero. If a female fetus typically has around 6-7 million eggs at 20 weeks of gestation, dropping to 1-2 million at birth, you think what you're saying would make any sense? No. No it does not. Also everyone is different. Weirdo

I think this is especially true nowadays. Venture Capitalism is actually a thing - back in the day it didn't exist and it was unheard of to invest in a start-up that wasn't "tried and tested". Venture Capitalists are quite radical people and they view things differently to other financiers. With Venture Capital, it is well known that most investments won't do well, however the 1/100 may outperform the rest of the portfolio. Unfortunately, as a result of this a lot of venture capitalists aren't interested in handling companies that will do moderately well - Go big or go home! Hence in some scenarios, nerds get kinda screwed. Would love to see a video or a short where you discuss this.

Good video. I agree that we should be genuine in life and engage in as many activities that interest us, rather than doing impressive things for the sake of impressiveness. It certainly is easier to be yourself and write from that perspective than to fabricate a new, more perfect person to write as. Being genuine can help offer nuanced insights, which can make your application unique. However, I disagree that honest people are more successful. It is simply not true. People who make choices that get them to better places are more successful; and that choice may sometimes be lying or cheating, unfortunately. Being honest because it might bring success doesn't seem authentic, tbh. Applicants should still be honest, not to become successful, but to get accepted into a university that is the best fit.

this is such a good lesson that i was actually also thinking about recently i think the biggest thing about this is that usually the goal ("B") is set for you by other people, and a lot of the time it's not that that goal itself is valuable, but the more valuable thing is that to achieve the goal, you are supposed to be forced to go through the straightforward path from A to B so you can learn and grow along the way one simple example of this is getting good grades. students who are really passionate about a subject and earnestly learn everything about it will usually get good grades in that class. that's usually a lot more work though, so most ppl try to figure out roundabout strategies (i.e. trying to figure out exactly what the teacher wants to hear in an essay, figuring out exactly what questions will be on a test and just rote memorizing only those answers, just straight up cheating) to get good grades. those roundabout strategies which actually each involve a good amount of work can get you to the goal, but you completely avoid actually learning the material, which is the only reason that goal was actually put in place in the first place. if the students went through the straightforward (but somewhat harder) path, they would actually learn and grow like they were supposed to in order to get to the goal "B" another huge thing about this is that if you fail to actually reach goal "B", if you were on the straightforward path, even though you didn't get the goal, you still learned and grew as intended along the way and still have something to show for your time. if you took the roundabout way and fail, you really won't have anything to show for it. for instance, with college admissions, if a highschooler is participating in a small number of extracurriculars they really care about and they think that will look good to college admissions but it doesnt work out, at least they still earnestly participated in something they cared about which is inherently valuable. if the roundabout highschooler sacrifices all their time to be president of a bunch of clubs they don't care about in a superficially way just for college apps, and then they don't get into the school they want, they would be devastated because they completely wasted their opportunity to do things they actually care about or could've grown from thanks for talking about this life lesson because even though it's not that popular or always well understood, it's actually so so important for all people to learn and apply to their lives :) i wish i had learned it sooner in mine

One question. In terms of transferring, do these collages look at your collage results, or both high school and collage results.
@marysbraindump
@marysbraindump 9 ай бұрын
I believe they look at both. I think the longer you've been in college (i.e. transferring as a sophomore vs. freshman), they'll look more at your college results than college (in other words, I assume they weigh more recent data more)

Hi Mary, Been following this channel for a while and I love the videos you've made where you've given life advice. However, I disagree with what you're saying in this video. (BTW when you said scheme I couldn't help but think of this scene from the Dark Knight where Joker is talking to Dent: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r53afoqml9tofM0si=xf8ZyWuscHaZ9W0g&t=55 ) Regarding your point of "Round-Aboutism" you mention how the strategy of trying to game/scheme a system isn't really effective and how actually being earnest and working on yourself is very effective. You also state that the strategy of "Round-Aboutism" ends up not getting you what you want and I feel that this statement could not be further from the truth. I agree with the statement that "working on yourself is more effective than Round-Aboutism" but I don't think discarding the strategy of gaming a system will benefit someone. The idea of gaming a system FUNDAMENTALLY comes from the fact that the system is not 100% effective. Imagine a perfect world with no errors - gaming the system would logically be a waste of time because there is nothing to gain; no extra advantage to salvage. The less effective a system and the more prone to human error, the better your odds are by gaming the system. Hence why I REALLY disliked the example you used of College Applications where the College Applications System is prone to bias (look at the obvious discrimination against Asian Americans as an example). In general, I think Admissions Officers are not being fully honest on what the requirements are to get into their institution (if you look at the University websites it's quite vague and furthermore most universities have almost identical requirements/expectations). Admissions Officers love mentioning how they want the "right fit" and they want to select someone based off their personality. The idea that they select you based on your "personality" is quite frankly absurd. The Myer-Briggs test which is a long series of questions which most people mistakenly believe is scientific, has no scientific basis and cannot categorise people into personality types based on their responses. If the Myer-Briggs test cannot categorise people, I don't even believe for a second that, admissions officers are effective at categorising people into personality types. The idea that Colleges want a certain type of person and can sift through all of the applications to find people who fit this criteria is nothing short of ludicrous. The fact is for interviews, working on your speech and working on how you talk and working on things that seem irrelevant to the requirements has a better chance of getting you into the institution you want - If you can speak clearly and charm someone you have a MUCH better chance of getting in. (You have to be able to sell yourself) In the video you mention an observation you have that people who try to scheme don't end up getting further as those who are earnest. In my experience this has not been the case and I struggle to think of an example where it is the case . For every earnest person I can think of, I can think of someone who (partially) schemed their way to the top. I would love to hear your thoughts on my response though because I'm a few years younger than you are and you have experienced life more than I have.

Thank you for taking the time to write such an interesting and long comment. I don't have a perfectly cohesive response to this but a few points: - Would agree that being earnest doesn't mean you should totally disregard "packaging" (which means i.e. storytelling, being aware of what other people think, etc." but it's mostly to say most effort should be put into the work, and then the packaging is way easier and effective) - So interestingly, at least at Harvard, I can think of very few instances where I felt people truly gamed the system (i.e. started something for the sake of their application, application really exaggerated their accomplishments). The vast majority of people had a very earnest interest in something & seemed "well fit" for Harvard. And that's not to say people who weren't "well fit" weren't good, a lot of MIT students I've met for example are a better fit at MIT than Harvard and vice versa. I think in colleges, this feels particularly contentious but my point is not that there aren't false negatives (people who should've/could've gotten in but didn't, there's a ton of those), but to say that there are few false positive (people who shouldn't have gotten in but did). I've also met a ton of people who try to scheme their way into really good schools, and they almost always don't succeed because people can read insincerity quite well. As someone in the work place and friendships this is way more obvious than in college, that there is such thing as fit - I would also agree that there's people who scheme who do end up very successful. Perhaps my point is that it's not necessary or orthogonal to success, in that a lot of earnest and a lot of schemey people (thought notably, those successful people are usually still earnestly good at something, i.e. networking) end up successful. And I do think a lot of earnest people get further ahead (as in people who end up really legendary at anything had to really care about the subject) - I think in sum the video should be modified to say that the vast majority of effort should be put into the earnest pursuit of anything (that doesn't mean don't care about the narrative, or the system, or don't be strategic, etc.) but to say that the fastest path between point A and B is always a straight line, and focusing on gaming the system is a much more circuous route
@czpiaor
@czpiaor 9 ай бұрын
I agree with your comment. This video works in a perfect system, which the college application process is not. Admissions officers sift through hundreds, if not thousands of applications. Most of the time, officers skim through essays for key words that fit their criteria. My friends and I used our FERPA rights to see notes and how long admissions spent on our profiles; astoundingly, no one had spent more than ten minutes. Most of the time, admissions are not able to properly sift through authentic and inauthentic profiles with such a short time. Admissions officers are still human and can't tell lies easily. Additionally, a survey by Intelligent shows that 34% of all white applicants lied about their ethnicity, and 3/4 of those that lied were accepted. Being dishonest in the college application system clearly has a non-negligible effect.

Hi! I am a high school graduate and an incoming freshman at college, I have never been able to find myself the motivation and opportunities to be able to participate in SOOO many activities as you did, do you have any advices on finding that motivation, and finding those opportunities? And also how did you work in so many clubs while also managing academics?
@marysbraindump
@marysbraindump 9 ай бұрын
Hey, these are all great questions! I would say each person has different motivations for doing ecs and you need to find what resonates with you, this can include finding a job (not the best reason but valid), finding friends, because you like doing the activity, etc. In terms of managing your time, try to be intentional about if how you're spending your time is aligned with how you want to live your life. How you spend your time should be an intentional reflection of your values. I.e. you can kind of force yourself to spend less time on academics and more time on ecs if that's what you value by signing up for EC's where you're then responsible to the club/to others, and you'll naturally shift your calendar that way. One tip for academics is to realize what you're trying to get out of it & keep it within those bounds if that's what you value (i.e. you can say, I'm going to try and get a B and not prioritze more than that). And in terms of opportunities, my number one tip is at the start of the year, sign up for all the clubs and email lists that you're remotely interested in and wittle it down, most opportunities in college are on those email lists and most people don't read them (but you should, across clubs you're not even in if you're interested in those subjects). Finally, don't be too hard on yourself! We capacity build over time, if you get a little bit better at a small thing, over time those habits stick and add up!
