This is another piece of Singapore’s rich history which the government of the day missed to capture and preserved as it was considered as a dying trade. Remember as it was barely 3 years since Singapore left the Federation of Malaysia to become a republic and there are many urgent and important issues for the government to handle. Thanks to the documentary film maker who have the foresight to remind the younger generation on the the colourful life of the past in Singapore.

Nice video capturing the life of ordinary Singaporean on a market day at Chong Pang. Singapore multi ethnicity was beautifully recorded and seeing young Sikh boys without the turban,Malays’ women without head coverings(tudung) and the Chinese aunties wearing cheongsams and baggy pants- a rare sight today!

I was 5 years old in 1968 and grew up in that neighbourhood including attending the nearby schools - West Hill Primary and Naval Base Secondary.
1968, the year I was born. This is amazing to see how people those days leads their daily routine. Thank you for the nostalgic video.

Very well done and loved everything about it. As a child visiting HK in the 1970s this brings back so many happy memories, this was a great time to live and a great place to live. Loved the traditional music, of course, and the narration, so British!! I have not been back since the 1980s and now things are so different under China's control. The memories will always however be there and this short video was a blessing. Many thanks for this

Me too ! Just further up the Thomson Rd at the Naval Base : My RFA officer colleagues and I rented a house in ChongPang during the refit, in Sembawang Shipyard, of RFA Stromness in 1969-70 ,I think. One £pound would buy you 7.4 Sing dollars back then. Today one£pound will get you just 1.7 Sing $ ..if you're lucky ! I finally moved out to Penang in 2007 on retirement : Indeed so many happy memories ...A remarkable video taking us down memory lane ...

Such a poor third world country, looks more primitive than Guyana. But a little better than South Sudan where they live in grass huts.

Nice. No wonder they erected a statue of an old man with a straw hat carrying a pole with two loads at the ends. I like the narration of this video and not the sleep inducing accents of local production during that era

These are real skillmen. No engrg drawings or calculation or machine needed. No Class Certification needed. They beat OCEANGATE submarine hands down...nothing to proof, no egos involved...just working hard for a living n toiling under the hotsun...put our younger generations to great shame.

The security guards of Hell are the twos one with 'a horse head' and the other with 'a cow head'. During the 7th month of the hungry ghosts the Hell's gate opens to release various kind of ghosts on one month visa for enjoyments. When the visa expires it 😊is a must for them to return back before the Hell gate closes. On head count, if there are 'overstayers' The 'cow head and horse face' security guards are out to search and arrest them. The candles are actually 'lamp posts' to guide them at night when they visit those 'dirty bars' plucking big and small papaya. They need those 'Bank of Hell' currency for daily transaction as a result stacks of these 'legal tenders' are burnt for tthem. In fact a Chinese lives a poor man, dies a rich man. They upgraded themselves too from 'a taxi driver' to 'an airline pilot' if the family burns him 'an aeroplane' It's a strange strange world we live in Master Jack!

across the Kallang River would have been British Naval shop builders, "Vosper Thornycroft" located in Tanjong Rhu. where they build patrol boats and small frigate vessels.I think it closed operations in the late 80s. But i remember as a young child in the late 80s. Anywya such a contrast from the Geylang side. which did all these traditional boards

Thank you very much for putting this video up and congratulations on the time and effort you must have spent in restoring it. When I found it, I was looking for a word to describe the clutter of boats on Singapore River at the time I first saw it in January 1977, so this is very nostalgic and perfect for my needs. In '77 I walked everywhere and could not believe my eyes when I saw such a battered clutter of wooden boat-like structures across what appeared to be a road, until I realised that they were indeed boats and that beneath them was an actual river. The next time I returned to Singapore, the mess, along with the Bhugi Street attractions and much more, had disappeared into modernity. The last time I was there, not even Raffles was recognisable. Have you videos or photos of any other countries around that time? I'm writing up the story (for my four adult children) of our nine months overland trip in 1977-78, taking public transport from New South Wales to old South Wales. The kids tell me they remember so very little of it after all these years that I need to recall it myself and write it into 'a book'. All the best to you and thanks. E Liz
