Also, two great software that use Fragstat's metrics are: VecLI ( it's realistically another but improved Fragstats) is new and the best landscape metrics software for vector data with 200 + metrics of Fragstats software, with GUI and window for visualization and manipulation vector data (shp files)..The whole process is automated and the software is completely free. landscapeXShiny is one new app for package " landscapemetrics" in R. For this you do not need to know how to work in the command line interface in the R environment.

Thank you for this helpful tutorial, Could I ask you the difference between FRAGSTAT and LECOS please? In Fragstat, there are sampling strategy options (moving window...). Is this option available here in LECOS? I assume that sampling strategy is necessary when dealing with large landscape (my current case). Thank you

Fragstats is the full suite of landscape tools available at www.umass.edu/landeco/research/fragstats/fragstats.html. LECOS is a smaller suite for QGIS based on fragstats. plugins.qgis.org/plugins/LecoS/

Thank you for the video, do you have an opinion on the source of lake Victoria?
@stuartehamiltongmail6 жыл бұрын
yep, rainfall and a depression that has built over time, not a rift-valley lake. quite shallow, just a natural depression with limited outflow. This is why the level changes so drastically in short periods. If you mean the data that is here dataverse.harvard.edu/dataverse/LakeVicFish and the lake source (furthest upflow) is in Burundi. vimeo.com/210437103

@@stuartehamiltongmail what caused the depression downwarpping ? What is at the bottom that causes the springs along the river Nile after it leaves lake Victoria ? Any relation to volcanic activity ? Any idea where the sources from the mountains used to flow before the lake ? How far back in time would you place it ? So much amazes me about the lake. Would a meteor create that depression? I saw some divers down there on KZbin m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/kIrVZWBthrmgmas Made me wonder what a submersible of some sort would find.

@@worldwide1856743 think of it as a shallow bowl. It was dry in the last 15000 years. It is a rain fed shallow lake. I suspect the earlier flow would have followed the Albertine Nile north.

I think it is best thought of as numerous sources. None are really major rivers in their own right.

Since when a Strahler-orde is negative? Why do you get such strange values?
@stuartehamiltongmail6 жыл бұрын
since SAGA implemented this algorithm. the threshold describes the minimum Strahler order to initialize a channel. Here, the Strahler order is computed as follows: first, the Strahler Order grid is initialized with 0. Then, the DEM is processed top-down and for each cell it is evaluated which cells flow into it and which Strahler order they have. If two "streams" (here cells) of the same order flow into the currently processed cell, the cell is given a number that is one higher. If cells with different stream orders flow into the currently processed cell, the cell is given the higher of the two numbers. After the whole DEM is processed, you have a grid with stream orders that can be used to apply the threshold for channel initiation. Negative and zero cell values can be explained as follows: after all processing is done, just before tool execution stops, the order grid is processed once more by adding the following term to each grid cell: (1 - threshold) This assigns each cell an order, with the summit and ridges having the lowest order. I don't remember how this was implemented in SAGA 2.1.2, but in recent versions the NoData value range of the Stream Order grid is set to the "negative to zero" value range in order to mask these values in a map view.
