Yes it was more expensive to do this tile job the way we did. But what other option is there ? Its always less expensive to do it right the first time than to have a low ball hack do it wrong. In that case then you have to tear out the hack work and start over. What a headache! That said each one can decide how to handle it. Our customer on this one was stoked when we were finished! Cheers

Help!! my contractor laid very expensive LVP over a very wavy floor!! It looks ridiculous and we've wasted our savings on our dream home. How do YOU fix wavy subfloors :(
@tileprep12712 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately there are so many variables with a situation like this, so it’s hard to give a simple answer. Some Lvp can be carefully uninstalled, subfloor repaired and then reinstalled. As you are probably well aware-the correct approach is to fix the subfloor before the lvp flooring is installed. That said so many do not want to spend the time or money….or both to do this the right way. I suggest that you show your contractor the specific error’s and work out a resolution. I’m so sorry to hear about this. I see it often and it’s sad how many take on flooring/ subfloor prep that are not qualified. I hope the best for you and your project !

It can be done either way. You typically will get better results if you can make it happen in one complete pour. If you have spike shoes or boots to walk through the freshly poured material while your pouring it will help to get it very flat and level. I hope this helps and your project goes well !

Looks like you actually raised the height of the floor about 1/4" as well. Isn't it possible to level the lowest point to the highest point of the sub-flooring or do you need to cover the entire floor. Plus... don't you need a sealer for the OSB before you lay down the self leveler?

Is there a minimum thickness purring over wood?
@tileprep12714 жыл бұрын
As long as you are using the primer and following the product manufacturers guidelines, most self leveling underlayment's allow for a feather finish to a much deeper ( or thicker) variance. Feather finish means very thin at about 1/8" or even less. That said some products do not go that thin very well. Most higher end SLU products perform better in this category. The Durrock Quick Top or HPS Schönox AP are a couple of SLU products that flow to feather finish very well. I hope this helps.

Edgeban , I plan on using techlevel 150. I do not want to raise the highest point of the floor if I can help it. The video showed a stapled wire lath with no primer. Is there a primer I can use that will help me skip the wire? And I have a small cement area that is part of the same floor due to a doorway expansion. Can I use the same primer on the cement? I plan on roughing up the cement with a grinder, or should not just use an acid like vinegar to prep the surface for the adhesive?
@tileprep12714 жыл бұрын
@@thinktwice1489 Based on the most up to date spec sheet you can indeed go directly on the OSB wood subfloor if you use the proper primer. Based on that description -You cannot go directly over these types of subfloors with just primer : " Do not bond directly to hardwood, Luan plywood, particle board, parquet, cushion or sponge-back vinyl flooring, metal, fiberglass or plastic." Im attaching the link to the actual spec sheet that Custom Building Products provides.It sounds like your on the right track to getting this done correctly, I hope this helps ! www.custombuildingproducts.com/TDS/TDS-248.pdf

It works decent outside. Much better than the laser products that were on the market 8-10 years ago. That said the line can be read outside but in full sun or very bright conditions it can be challenging to see the line clearly. Also and probably obviously the line gets more blurry and distorted the further away you get from the actual laser unit. I hope this helps. Thanks !

From TechLevel 150 data sheet: OSB underlayments should be coated with 10-15 mils of RedGard® Waterproofing and Crack Prevention Membrane prior to priming with an appropriate CustomTech™ primer. A 2.5 lb/yd² metal lath must be fastened every 6" - 8" (15 - 20 cm) with fasteners that have a galvanized or corrosion-resistant coating. A minimum of 1/4" (6 mm) of TechLevel 150 can be applied over this properly prepared OSB. Maybe I missed it but looked like you only laid the metal lathe directly on to the unprepped OSB subfloor.
@tileprep12714 жыл бұрын
Interesting. When I poured this floor Tech Level 150 was a new product by Custom Building Products. I read the label thoroughly and at the time the label did not include what you included in your comments. I actually called CBP's tech support 2 separate times to verify the correct and approved methods. CBP did not mention Redguard or primer but they did say to use metal lath. In my experience as a professional tile setter -primer will do very little if you have stapled 2.5 metal lath to the floor before an SLU is poured. With that lath you are creating a mechanical bond to the wood that the SLU essentially locks into once its cured...... primer wouldn't hurt anything but its a waste of money with the lath stapled to the floor. We also sealed up all cracks ,nail holes and gaps with latex caulk before stapling the lath down. This sealed up all possible loss points for the initially very liquid SLU. This floor was for a great customer that I have still have contact with, the bathroom floor, and entire tile job is performing like the day it was finished. In the future I would certainly follow all manufacturers guidelines when installing their product, but at that the time these descriptions were not present on the label instructions. If my customer had any problems I would have been back to fix it right away. I stand by all my installations. I hope this answers your question

I wanted to ask about the use of a gauge rake and or a spiked roller. None of the instructional videos showed either being used. Is that solely due to the type of SLC? Or was that done and just not part of the video?

@tileprep12714 жыл бұрын
Lito Loco 4 Fish Interesting. I do know that if you speak with a product Rep they will tell you that you have some ( up to .5 liter + or - ) flexibility with the mix depending on job conditions. Job conditions can vary greatly in temperature, humidity, elevation & others. So in reality you can slightly adjust the water ratio. The main thing is that it’s not just an eyeball effort when mixing in the water. If that were done it could result in a product failure, especially if you overwater. I hope this helps ! Thx !

Marco Poulin Hello there. Perhaps you should do a little homework. Our policy is to apply and use industry standards in all of our installations. The method shown in this video is an approved and often recommended method to correct a floor that is out of level and is not flat. That is what SLU ( self leveling underlayment) is designed and intended for. We use uncoupling membrane on most of our tile installations as well. That said uncoupling membrane and leveling compounds do different things in the process. Uncoupling membrane will not correct a floor that is slightly or severely out of level. On this floor we installed electric floor heat with an uncoupling membrane system, so no our tiles will not crack on this or any of our installations. There are so many details that we could go on with here.... but the bottom line is that we follow tested and approved methods in all of our professional installations. See the attached links for more info. Cheers www.ceramictilefoundation.org/blog/ultimate-guide-to-underlayment-for-tile www.tile-assn.com/news/news.asp? webstore.ansi.org/standards/astm/astmf287313

Self leveler isn’t water so it’s not as fluid and holds tension. You have to break the tension with a spreader so it covers the whole area and then it can level itself. Just sounds like you want to be a smartass and complain about an extra step that takes no effort and gets the job done properly
