I think I explain what a collection is quite nicely in this video around the 3-minute mark: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioGlYZWcedOgftk (sorry to self-promote). I also think I explained it a little bit in the vlog I did while revising for my collections at the start of term (they're essentially mock exams): kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJOygoiBftaXl8U

Please don't take this as semantic carping, but I know Collections as tutorial reports on progress in formal attendance before the college head (in Balliol called Handshakes). Examinations of the sort you (unusually) had at the beginning of Michaelmas are Prelims or (Hon.) Mods? Does Worcester work things differently (not my college)? Just out of interest.
@ABM-UK28 күн бұрын
We also have Provost's/Master's collections, which are meeting with the college head, but now the exams we have at the start of term are also called collections. They are extremely informal mock exams done simply to practice exam technique and have absolutely no bearing on your results.
@1258-Eckhart28 күн бұрын
@@ABM-UK Ok, thanks for that. I vaguely remember this option (informal exams), but never myself had to sit any (Philosophy & Modern Languages)!

So what do you do with a Spanish degree? A translator for the Foreign Office or U.N.?
@ABM-UK28 күн бұрын
Lots of different things! To be a translator, you usually need a Master's in translation, but I can go into teaching, business, consulting, etc. The languages give me a big advantage over other candidates in a job application that doesn't require you to have a specific degree.

I recall asking in an earlier video about the mock exams that you took at the beginning of the term. Wondering if you have (and can share) more background regarding the purpose/how they are guiding your studies and prep for your final exams.
@ABM-UKАй бұрын
Hi, I think I did reply to that comment. The main thing is that, like all mock exams, they show you where the gaps in your knowledge are while also giving you a chance to practice writing essays/translations, etc., in the exam format and under time pressure, which you never really do in normal work

Why are students not granted more time for rather more in-depth studies? Is it mainly because Oxford wants to give a great number of people the opportunity to study? Rather than fewer and more time individually? It all sounds terribly rushed… It is of course great to have a university like Oxford!
@ABM-UK3 ай бұрын
I would say we do go into a lot of depth, it just takes a lot of work, which we (neither students nor tutors) don't always have a lot of time for. Unfortunately, that then means that when we have to revise, it gets a bit complicated...
@SorcererLord3 ай бұрын
Yeah, it’s strange. There’s no benefit to Oxford and Cambridge having 8 week terms instead of the usual 12. They do it to be different and artificially create the impression that the courses is tougher. This feeds into and supports the culture that they’re top unis and it’s so tough to study there, they only accept the best etc. But really the 8 week terms are much more likely to cause burnout, especially when you consider that having a weekend off isn’t really a thing, most students are essentially working 7 days a week. You should see libraries like the Rad Cam on a Saturday, it opens at 10 am and 10 mins later it’s completely packed and all the seats are taken.
