Must have been tough to quote this job; so many steps and potential pitfalls. Reminds me of Abom's big vice machining, but he was able to do that completely at leisure, but still managed to get himself tied up in all sorts of mistakes and other not forseen challenges.

I bit the big one on that job. I bid it for 8 hours and put 25 hours into it. Spent the whole damn week dinkin' with that thing. I did get a good video out of it and that ain't nothing.

Nik the reason it moved is because you had the clamping bolt closer to the step block than the part. The clamping force was greater on the step block than the part. Regards from Australia.

Nik, I wish I lived closer so I could come and help. I was screaming at the computer saying 'Nik, move the clamping studs closer toward the job as all you are doing is pulling down the wedge step blocks with most of the holding power' and make up u centre plug to match the bore to centralize the component on the rotary table. Anyway enjoy a safe and Merry Chriistmas. Ian New Zealand

Nick, first, here I am Christmas Eve watching Nick machine precision parts. Why you ask ? Because I just came in from my shop where my 80 year old brain was busy machining a part for an old air compressor. Which I just screwed up, again, this old brain of mine seems on occasion to loose track of what it’s doing and takes me on a trip down primrose lane. Merry Christmas to you and your family!

For the 'boss' you make in the first half, would an annular cutter be helpful?
@NikColyerMachineWorksАй бұрын
The shoulder was an odd size so it had to be single pointed.
@ianlangley987Ай бұрын
Hi Nik, as Dave says below I would have use the RT on the mill for that part. I am not sure why you had so much tool hanging out as the first rule of thumb is to keep everything as short as possible to get the best rigidity, especially when machining stainless as it has a tendency to work harden, which I think you found out with all the different tools not working. Also, I think the position of the pivot hole and tapped hole would be rather critical? Keep up the good work.
@NikColyerMachineWorksАй бұрын
Yeah, in hindsight I think you all are right, but at the time it looked like a good approach.
@daveticehurst4191Ай бұрын
Real slow going with the lathe. Would have been quicker using the rotary table on the mill I would have thought ❓Regards from Australia.
@NikColyerMachineWorksАй бұрын
Probably, but I was worried about the shoulder so I chose the slower approach.

As the split only needed a few thou. I would have taken it over to your vertical bandsaw and did it on there. Regard from Australia.
@daveticehurst4191Ай бұрын
Be careful Nik, I was cringing and shouting out for you to stop, when you started the chuck up with the packing blocks still in. They could have flew out and seriously injured you, especially as you bent down to see the hole runout. TAKE CARE PLEASE. Regards from Australia.
@NikColyerMachineWorksАй бұрын
Yes, it did spin out of the chuck but luckily everything was moving slow enough that it lopped out rather than rocketing out and dropped to the floor. Another disaster averted.
@ianlangley987Ай бұрын
Wow, I could see those packers coming out during your setting the hole on the lathe. Centrifugal force can do a lot of damage so I think you dodged a bullett there Nik. Did you not try and talk the customer into fabrcating because as you go further with this its going to become very flimsy and unstable when machining but you have plenty of tenacity so I am sure you will win in the end. Cheers and good luck.
@NikColyerMachineWorksАй бұрын
I tried to talk him out of it, but the customer wanted it made from one piece.
