I think Mike's take on TikTok musicians was spot on and not an attack on nepotism or individuals who are actually passionate about music and use their platform to create a career. A good example of this is someone like Nessa Barret, who has always wanted to be a singer, got TikTok famous, and used her fame to launch a music career. She now releases albums, tours, and writes and plays her own music. Mike is clearly not talking about people like her. He is talking about people who get TikTok fame and randomly are like wait should I make music? and its extremely mediocre because it's not their passion and it made for the sole purpose of virality.

I completely understand where Matt is coming from with Katy Perry. She very much plays the role of "regal, mean" American Idol judge. I do like her, but there's something about how she looks at the singers and speaks to them that's a bit condescending. Yes, Simon Cowell was the "mean" judge, but he judged them based on whether or not they had star quality and could actually make it, and he was brutally honest when he didn't think they could. Katy Perry is a singer, so she's judging based on singing - not "Am I signing this person to my record deal," as Simon had to. It makes more sense for him to be more critical.

Matt, Katy Perry has been kind of cancelled a few times for some things she’s done on idol. Good job picking up on it, I’ve always loved her and thought she has been different recently and I think the queen vibe nailed it on the head.

I think Olivia Rodrigo is trying to pull the classic Taylor Swift/Miley Cyrus move. She is going to start with young girls who can relate to teenybopper songs and then slowly transition into more womanly songs that are still about her love and life journey. it seems like the industries becoming very aware that there’s a really strong correlation between the artist people listen to his kids and when their adults. Everybody knows the kid market is always booming but now they’re learning to translate those kids into adult consumers. Basically creating lifelong fans on purpose. it’s like the industry has realized that if the artist just grows with their audience, they can keep them forever. Which seems obvious, but previously the industry was ruled by one hit wonders and the next big thing but it seems lots of musical artist are being very considerate of their longevity. The only artist to have previously done that or people like Dolly Parton, Madonna, etc. It seemed alot less doable for a female entertainer to stay around for a lifetime compared to any male singers like Michael Jackson, Prince Johnny Cash, any rapper over the last 20 years, ect. The music labels have definitely figured out the equation and are starting to push it for many new artists. It seems like an artist can make it past being popular for about two years, theyre likely to be here for the long-haul. Where as many artist can’t be viral or famous for more than a couple months, 6-12mo at best.

im glad erin stood up for artists who dont necessarily write their own music. of course i criticize nepo babies when they deserve it, but theres a ton of great songs that weren't written by the singer. those songs are still written by songwriters, so i dont get the vitriol against them. it just feels like diminishing the work done by the songwriters and producers just bc someone can't play an instrument.
