The oldest house was not built by Jacquet but by Pierre Mesnard for Jacquet. Pierre Mesnard was my 7th great grandfather and worked on many of the old buildings in Quebec City. He married a Fille de Roi and they had a daughter, my 6th great grandmother, who married into the Levasseur wood carving family who made the altar in the Ursulines Chapel.

How can it be 'Oldest house in Canada' when aboriginals were living in Canada long before Europeans showed up?
@zhannahere202 жыл бұрын
I meant that is still standing. But of course there were many houses before these.

The Parc Jeanne d'Arc you show in your video is not where the battle of the Plains of Abraham really took place. You should have walked 400m west and you would have had the alignment of the French regiments and the British one. James Wolf died during that battle that day, Montcalm was also fatally wounded and died a short while after. The discussions between the French and British to end combats and surrender the city came a few days later.
@jacquesplov38612 жыл бұрын
The first version of O Canada is French and was first sung June 24th, 1880 on the occasion of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste, the national holiday of French Canadians. It's says so on the monument right behind you when you are facing the statue of Joan of Arc.

Thanks. I made some mistakes. I just said what I remembered from the bus tour I took the day before.

The battle of the Plains of Abraham was the one battle the British won. It came mid-September 1759, just as the British had started thinking about moving back to New England or England, not wanting to be stuck in the hard winter of Québec. The battle lasted about half an hour, but the siege of Québec had started mid-June, the British destroying all the farm along the Saint Laurent, bombarding Québec, the city, with not less than 50 000 bombs, destroying most of the city. The British had during three months tried to set foot on the Baie-de-Beauport and were successfully pushed back by the French, the Canadiens and their Native allies. They never succeeded. The battle on the Plains of Abraham was a feat for the British as they took the French by surprise. The French surrendered later that day not wanting to have the city destroyed any further and causing more deaths. However, it should be noted that in the spring of 1760, Général de Lévis came back and there was a second battle of the Plains of Abraham which they won. The British retreated back into the city and that is what helped them keep their stand. The first ships that came sailing up the Saint Laurent in spring were British ships and so that meant the fight was over, the French were not able to send any help, supplies or new soldiers. So you see, it's not all simplistic as the tourist guides' recounting of the Siege of Québec.

@zhannahere202 жыл бұрын
Hi, one bedroom depends which area. From 1000 if you live in a basement apartment to 2000 if you wish to live downtown.
@hdufort2 жыл бұрын
If you want to survey online ads for apartments, what you call "1 bedroom" would usually be called a "3 1/2" in Québec. This means 3 full rooms (living room - dining, kitchen and bedroom) plus 1 bathroom. A "4 1/2" would be a 2 bedrooms apartment. "5 1/2" has 3 bedrooms or separate living room and dining plus 2 bedrooms. And a "6 1/2" would have 3 bedrooms, living room, dining and kitchen. That would correspond to a flat occupying a full level of a building.

I have les Fille du Roi ancestors on both sides of my family. It's commonplace for people who emigrated to Canada in the mid/late 1600's. The population of Quebec was about 6000, and also the Bishop DuPlessis de Mornay insisted that married couples have as many children as possible in order to populate Canada. My grandmother was the oldest of seven children.
@linefrenette91162 жыл бұрын
My grandmother had 11 children and my mother is the oldest. Quebec also has Métis blood in its veins because French settlers had married Aboriginal women between 1534 and 1640 ,years before les filles du Roi

After the Conquest by the British, the families had lost a lot, most lost their homes, their farms were destroyed and their herds slaughtered. They had to have lots of kids to help out on the land and survive. Since they were Catholics, they could not hold civil positions unless they renounced their faith and spoke English. They could not open a business either. It was a survival period for the «Canadiens» that were left to fend for themselves. This explains the large families and how they grew from 80,000 in 1763 to 8 millions now and that is not counting the 1 million who left to live in the States and whose descendants would number also around 8 millions. Poor nations always have very high birth rates, but also numerous childhood deaths too.

Let me know what you think about Queen Street West in the comments. Do you agree with what I said about the MEC building? Also there are some corrections in the descriptions. If you would like to see history or deep dive into another Toronto street, let me know. Next tour will be West Queen West, which has very interesting history, secrets and hidden gems.
