There's a whole concept of the "Mormon Mafia" we'll have to cover at some point. If you look as SFF there is an enormous overrepresentation of LDS folks in the tradpub side of that genre the wake of Orson Scott Card & subsequently Sanderson
@bulbainquisition95907 күн бұрын
@@tookysmag that is extremely interesting. I have experience and have benefited from Mormon in-group preference and I guess you can describe as a miniature "Mormon Mafia" in my local community but I see any strong culture preference for writing for besides maybe journaling. It could have something to do with BYU having more traditional schooling for the arts. I have heard that is the reason for the many classically trained painters and sculptors that are Mormon.

31:20 Sanderson does serialize his work weekly for a few months prior to the release of his Stormlight novels, so in that sense he is tapping into the Royal Road style hype engine on top of his progress bars.

Hey guys and Katherine! I was really excited when I saw this on my recommended page. It's a very interesting topic that you discus and you have a great guest (especially for the given topics). I do feel that you are all assuming that your audience is much more niche and informed than may actually the case. I'm just speaking from my own perspective but there were a lot of moments in this where you go into a very specific example without properly taking the time to explain it. Taking that time would really help me come along because I'm not in the position to constantly google NSFW terms while I'm about and listening to a pod. I also get a bit exhausted from Gabe's stream of consciousness rants, he gets very wordy. It's a good practice to think of a full sentence before you start speaking. You hear other people try to interject and they can't get a word in (he's also the only one of you being consistently addressed by name?). And I'd liked it if you guys put a bit more effort into facilitating and interviewing your guest and exploring the stated topic more before branching off. I would have loved to hear more about "Fem Gooning" and feel like there was a lot more to say about it. Anyway I'll be waiting for the next one :)

We seriously need to do an entire episode on modern genre boundaries because I feel similarly. But at the same time, I really don't want every book to be so hyper-commecialized into being for a certain gender, social class, age bracket, ethnicity, etc. even as that's kind of the way it's going now

My takeaway is that this deepend level of fictosexuality is only possible in an atomized state, but as Katherine points out the lower levels are pretty ubiquitous and harmless. Unfortunately nobody has an easy answer to the the rising rates of this stuff
