nope not a fan of this song, either when it debuted or today. When it came out I was 18yrs old, the song was confusing and the video was... confusing also with all the slapping... yes the slapping was to the beat of the song but nope I just was not getting it... and neither were other at the House Parties I was at. This song was a party downer when it played on MTV. Nope as a person from the midwest, flyover county, this song was not played on cassette or album player at any of parties I was at.

Are you sure about that, Burton? I certainly can understand why some (or many of us) may have thought it was political when we heard this line in the lyrics: "I don't need your war machines, I don't need your ghetto scenes"

LOL I always thought it was obvious when I was i kid even. But yeah, it was a surprisingly popular mainstream song. Many seemed oblivious. I think the majority of people, now, then and always do not listen to lyrics beyond a few words of a chorus. Cool Video. Time to go listen to some Steely Dan.

Anything Bob Seger has done. Too many great songs, radio only played a half a dozen? Why? Why I cry. So many songs, so little time. I was walking, By The River, I held my hand out, To feel the rain.

"They pushed themselves artistically but they stayed grounded". So, what you're REALLY saying is they kept their "feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars." Best. Band. Ever.

Mom was a huge Beatles fan, dad was a huge Beach Boys fan. It was fun to hear them rib eachother as to which band was greater, while I was growing up, even though the music was 'old' by that time. It was 'their music' from 'their time' but as I grew up listening to it, it became MY music too. I was so fortunate to have cousins in AZ that were older by 5 and 7 yrs, while I was growing up. They were really tuned in to new music and we would sit and listen to records they just bought for hrs! It seemed that all the new summer music slowly filtered east at the time.I got to hear bands like Crowded House way before my friends did back home. As a result, I would write certain close friends letters ( yeah we did stuff like that) and tell them to look up so and so at our local record shop, long before it hit our airwaves. As for Elderly Woman..That's a song I cannot play anymore. 3 yrs ago, an ex-g/f that I hadn't seen in 28yrs suddenly walked into my life, through the garage door of my small shop. Even at 47 yrs old myself, I couldn't believe the way I still felt about her. I actually said "My God it's been so long, never dreamed you'd return, but now here you are, and here I am.." and I'm not sure but maybe way back in my subconscious, that song was where I took that from. But I meant it. Problem was the girl I recalled at 16, wasn't the woman of 44 I came to know, and our new relationship ended horribly traumatic. Sometimes we need to heed the lyrics of our music gods.

I LOVE that you pronounce NES as "nes", like a word. It is so charmingly midwestern. I also love all you do on your show, so don't be insulted by this... but I know you won't, because you're obviously way cooler than that. I also really LOVED Roseane Cash's foray into new wave, as it was seen at the time...

Boston was way ahead of their time. I was 16 when it came out and I was in awe of the entire album. I'm a singer who can hit high notes but I can't even do justice to that track.

On the Beatles song, I think some songs are better as a solo than as a duet. Duets are great for adding power to a song but not so good for songs about vulnerability.
