Coming up, an interview with Carlos Santana, a musical genius, a guru of the highest order, and a saint. You have to see this interview. So try to follow this if you can. Santana's biggest song of the 70s, Balck Magic Woman, was a rock classic that many people have no clue is a cover from a band that started as a blues band... but would end as one of the biggest rock bands ever when it became a completely different set of members but that’s not all. It was a cover but the guy who wrote it basically admitted that he ripped off the music from a song from the 50s. So when the cover song became a huge hit for today’s guitarist he decided to send royalties out of his now pocket to the guy who got ripped off! Today’s legend got inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame after several decades of legendary songs and albums and everybody thought his career was winding down and then the year after his induction he had one of the biggest albums ever including a song that was the #1 song of the year in two different years falling at the end of a decade and beginning a new one. The stories are next on Professor of Rock.

It’s time for another edition of our show Revelations where featured artists share rare stories behind their greatest songs and albums. Insight you won’t find anywhere else. Today we have very spiritual sit-down with a musical genius the guitar guru, Carlos Santana. Carlson tells us the stories of his biggest hits including the 70s classic black magic woman which was written by Peter Green for Fleetwood Mac but Carlos got a hold of hit with Greg Rolie on vocals and made it all his own. So get this. Peter Green wrote Black Magic Woman While in Fleetwood Mac which at the time was a blues band… Most people don’t realize this is a cover song. So Fleetwood Mac put it out and then later went from a full-on British blues band to a full-on rock pop band when the band turned over almost the entire band when Peter Green left in 1970 and Christine McVie became an official member and then Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham came in. So on the subject of Black Magic Woman.
In many interviews, Peter Green fully acknowledged that the song was heavily influenced by "All Your Love”’ the 1958 song by otis rush. Later when it became a major hit for Santana. He would say unequivocally and i Quote "If you take the words from 'Black Magic Woman' and just leave the rhythm, it's 'All Your Love'-it's Otis Rush”. So not only was Santana’s version of the song a lifesaver for Peter Green who gave up all his royalties when he left Fleetwood Mac, Carlos sends royalties to Otis Rush even though he doesn’t have to… He’ll explain next. Carlos also shares the story behind his massive comeback that spawned his first hit in years. It actually became one of the biggest songs of the last 25 years and he did it after he’d been inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when everyone thought his career was on the downswing.
Smooth was an international success, hitting #1 on the billboard charts for 12 consecutive weeks.

Atheist here as well. He's pretending that the inner voice is God it isn't. Thats how Christians are. Being on God's team doesn't keep you humble. He couldn't have backed up his statement if he was pressed on it. Still a great interview though.

I have a interesting story about Santana, As a young teenager I use to ride my bike around the neighborhood and collect glass soda bottles and redeem them at my local market to have money to buy records at Sears (they use to have a record dept.) when Abraxas was released in 1970 I bought the record and was playing it in my room, my dad came in and asked me who was playing, I told him Santana the guitar player, he said it sounds like this young kid I used to hear at this little bar in Tijuana where we would stop at after fishing before coming home, later I read Carlos at the age of 15 used to play at a little dive bar in Tijuana.

Carlos has always been a reminder me to be a good person. He's genuine and sincere in an industry that chews up and spits out too people when they are no longer profitable. Not the least bit surprised he gives royalties out of pocket to Otis Rush. That's who Carlos is as a person. Its all the more wonderful how much of an inspiring musician he is and has been for countless guitar players including myself. Black Magic Woman from Abraxis was one of the first songs I wanted to learn as a young kid playing guitar. A little older later on as teenagers we would take LSD and look at that album cover with all the finite details while listening to the LP (not encouraging drug use but if you know, you know its a great album to do just that). Awesome interview and my favorite part was Carlos fist bumping The Professor of Rock...very cool.

I'm not sure he mentioned it in the video but Clapton also recorded a cover of All Your Love with John Mayall and the Blues Breakers in 1966, which is the version that inspired Peter Green to write Black Magic Woman which in turn inspired Santana to record his own version. We have a lot to thank Mr Rush for! P.S. Nice profile picture ;)

What a GREAT video. Very nicely done, sir. We loved "Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen" when it came out, of course, who didn't, but my appreciation of this guitar great hit new heights with "Soul Sacrifice" out of Woodstock. My absolute favorite number back then. I can be on the road for a long trip, start up "Caravanserai," and the miles just float by. Every track, wonderful. I have maintained, to some minor ridicule, that "Jungle Strut" in Santana 3, simplified in certain ways, would be a wonderful number for a high school band or orchestra. We saw Santana in concert in Denver. They were originally scheduled to play Red Rocks, but weather. They finally got sloughed off to the Denver Coliseum, but even in that somewhat awkward arena, it was wonderful, and Carlos Santana was stellar and generous with his bandmates. The pinnacle of Santana listening pleasure for me is "Europa" off the "Viva Santana!" album, and yes, it has to be that version. The peacefulness, the energy, the power, the raw sexuality, and nonpareil guitar playing highlighted by the 60-second sustain - just breathtaking. I was on a road trip with a blues-rock musician, put the CD in, and at one point in his amazement he yelled, "Okay, Carlos, now you're just showing off!" And finally, "Smooth," and I got tears in my eyes from the realization that a whole new generation gets to appreciate anew the genius and joy of Carlos Santana's musical prowess. You wanted memories? There's mine.

Oh I love this interview man! Genuinely, I resonated so much with what he expressed and said. Carlos and Eric Clapton - THE two most impactful, influential and best guitarists around. Of course without prior artists to give their inspiration to them, they may not have found themselves on this same path, and seeing the same sound and success, but it isn't from those before them that we got them, it is from their own unique touch and styles, and their passion that gave birth to them and their unique sound. So yes, Chuck Berry in example may have been and still be considered one of the best guitarists of all time, and at one point, the cream of the crop, among many others, but Carlos and Eric are truly the best of the best all on their own.

Before Woodstock, my Ex-weed dealer lived on Mount Tamalpais (Mt. Tam) on the same street as Carlos. He told me many stories. One was that Carlos would sit on the stoop of his house all day and night, practicing on his SG, and he wouldn't even plug into an amp. Fast forward many years later, and I found out my wife (we didn't know each other back then) made out with Carlos back in the day. She says she doesn't remember it, but she was a little stoner chick. 😂 My wifes best friend, to this day, is Jeannie. Jeannie says that it did happen. Their third friend, Joanie, was always with them. RIP Joanie. 🙏 My wife and Jeannie tell me they had lots of fun during the hippie faze in San Francisco. I've asked them both if "Jean" is Jeanne in Evil Ways, if Joan is Joanie, and if "who knows who" was the lyric for my wife, cause Carlos probably didn't rememberher her name like she doesn'tremember making out with him, but they say they doubt it. Carlos, tell me who Jean, Joan, and Who Knows Who is, please? Nam, Myoho, Renge, Kyo, good vibes for everyone in 2025! ✌️

I grow morning glories and moonflowers. The moonflower was an important plant to the people of what is now Mexico during pre-Columbian times, particularly in Jalisco where Mr. Santana was born. I wonder if that's why he chose it as an album title.

I’ve mentioned this before, so here I go again… My dad was always listening to one of his albums Sunday mornings. I loved most of it, I just couldn’t get into the Doors, but that’s another story. My dad was a HUGE Santana Fan! I remember staring at the cover art of my dad’s copy of Abraxas. I remember thinking that I really wanted to be at this beach party. LOL, I was 7. What did I know… I do love his songs, Say it Again has ALWAYS been a favorite. And Blues for Salvador (an instrumental) and Europa and my favorite instrumentals of his… The first time I had the opportunity to see Carlos Santana live, I could almost FEEL my dad standing next to me… My dad was my music MENTOR and he would be the first person to say that there is NO SUCH THING as a “bad Santana song”.

The best part of the song is the middle section where it goes into a complete Samba and then Carlos Santana rips a huge guitar solo. It is one of the most exciting middle sections of a song ever.

I grew up in the 60s and 70s. Santana was always being played in someone's car while we were cruising. You mentioned a resurgence when the album Supernatural was released. I was still listening to Santana when that "resurgence" hit.

I am glad he mentioned John Lee Hooker. Chill Out is one of my favorite John Lee Hooker albums and the title track with Santana playing is amazing. John Lee Hooker had a unique sound that it often seemed weird how he meshed with different musicians. Chill Out is as much a Santana song as a John Lee Hooker song.

Way back in the 60's my uncle worked selling records to stores. He brought home an unreleased album for me. It was Abraxuses. I hope I spelled that right. It hadn't been released to the stores yet. I loved the record and played the heck out of it. I have been a fan ever since. Cheers

Ironically, I was in the middle of playing Europa at a 5-star hotel gig when James Burton walked up to me and gave me a thumbs up. When I eventually recognised him, he looked pretty chuffed. I'll never forget that. Carlos has been my major influence as a guitarist. He taught me how to make a guitar sing, talk and soar. It became my true voice.

Most men who talk like this, you may do this too, but I dismiss them as potheads or hippies. Carlos Santana is the only person who talks about spirituality and commonality so freely and joyfully and I never dismissed as some young pup tripping on acid. He's genuine. He walks the walk. He puts it in his music, and it's not just some ethereal thing you kinda sorta feel; it's palpable, it's something you can sink your teeth into.

Being a guitar player for 45 years.I've always enjoyed and respected santana and his music. I've played in many cover bands and did many of his songs through the years. As a guitar player, I can tell you. It is easy to replicate his style if you practice enough. The key I found is this. You have to feel the music. With enough practice, anyone can play a Santana song. But if you don't feel it inside, you're just copying the notes and it will show. So when you play a Santana song or any song for that matter, try to get a feeling for it. I've been playing since I was 14 years old.And there are a ton of Guys who play better than me.... But I give it all. I have and pour my heart into it and try to come as close as I can.

Great video! Santana is one of my favorite bands, and I would love to see more content on them. Especially the story of how the original lineup broke at the end of 1971 which led to the recording of Caravanserai in 1972, one of their best albums.

Black Magic Woman was one of the first songs that I learned to play in 1971. It has taken the next 53 years for me to get as close to the “Santana Smooth” sound, (as I call it), as I can possibly get. He has a way with those magic fingers that is hard to duplicate. Great interview!!😎

I’m sitting here listening to this and I like Carlos a lot, spiritual is not smoking weed for ever! Altered state of mind. Living a life in a natural way, no drugs etc, dealing with life, the highs and the lows and getting Wisdom from it, young people looking might be given a wrong impression of who was important to the rock scene in England, ELVIS was the biggest star. Paul McCartney has a jukebox in his office in London with all Elvis records in it, I always taught that when I heard George shearing at the Newport Jazz festival, that’s where Santana got their sound, guitar instead of piano. Carlos looks great here and I’ve seen him look his age, what happened?
