The Smoker-Special interior reminds me of an '85 vw jetta I owned. The PO was a heavy smoker and every surface had a heavy yellow/black tar like coating. The touch surfaces were disgusting. Several rags, rolls of paper towel, lots of various citrus and alcohol cleaners later and the interior looked immaculate.

I don't have the P1630, but I have the T2020. It has essentially the same design, but a larger display, Wacom input, full size DDR3 memory, and no webcam. I tested this out, and yes, this laptop does work with a Sony Vaio connector. With its original 93Wh battery, it sometimes lasts 6-7 hours of web browsing! Thankfully since the T2020 has DDR3 full-size memory with its Core 2 Duo, I can actually upgrade this to 4GB RAM and do web browsing relatively quickly. In fact, I'm watching this video in 1080p on this laptop with Linux.

Does your rear defroster work now that you cleaned it like that? I was taugh that you were supposed to clean along the lines and from side to side and rear window or you’d screw up the defroster

never did I ever think that a year after watching this video that I'd end up getting the same laptop model from a computer club at my school. it has no storage drive and I don't have 2.5" IDE drives so i'll consider getting that IDE to mSATA adapter too.

Recently, my IBM Thinkpad A22M that I owned for a couple years started acting weird by randomly shutting itself off after being turned on for a bit. Later, I got a random error message when I tried booting into the computer. Turns out, the BIOS chip was completely fried, rendering the laptop basically useless. This is the only laptop I owned that has broken down on me. I fear for the other vintage laptops I have in my possession.

The fact that a car is cheaper than the PS5 Pro and most smartphones these days is crazy. Yes, it’s from 1992, but it’s still crazy that a whole ahh car that’s still functional is cheaper than a smartphone.

$15 is a steal! Been reviving some old laptops my family has had lying around, but this exact laptop we sadly got rid of a long time ago. Would love to find one again and have a Windows XP laptop to play with. Looking at like $100 for one on Ebay tho, oof.

Ever notice that hole that says _Do not block_ on the top case of a hard drive? That's an air breather hole. The white strip isn't meant for moisture, it's meant for dust filtration. When you spin a platter really fast, the surrounding atmosphere wants to press down on it, but the molecules encounter the spinning motion of the surface and adhere to it, crashing into the next molecule and pulling it along with, and so on. This creates a sort of compressed "cushion" of air surrounding the platter, and dust can gouge the surface on a microscopic level, so having a supply of filtered air at a specific volume of airflow (and pressure) is critical to the function of the drive heads, hence the breather hole. The heads are the pointed tips on the drive read arm, with the bit behind the fulcrum being a coil electromagnet. The magnet only controls the swing of the arm (thus the placement of the head), however you may have noticed that little head-park ramp. When the arm gets sent onto the platter, it hops the head clear of the spinning platter so the head can literally "fly" on that cushion of compressed air surrounding said platter. If the drive lost power suddenly, the deceleration of the platter would mean the heads "crashing" into the platter surface, which is why drive arms are set to auto-return with a tensioner, safely parking once the electromagnet controlling the arm loses power. Ideally, the heads never physically contact the platter. In the real world, tho, it's sort of like how the early Xbox 360 had a habit of consuming discs if you changed their angular momentum by switching the console from upright to laying flat while it was spinning: you don't want that drive head still colliding with the platter because a force variable greater than what was accounted for gets introduced (like a percussive event). That is why drives have so many warnings against applying excessive pressure (warpage), excessive heat (less air pressure & greater SMC lifespan loss), excessive cold (you illustrated that brilliantly with condensate formation), or sudden shocks that could cause tolerances to change and allow for a crash.

The only full hard drive failure I've had so far has been from a Sky TV box, after getting a new box I took out the drive to test it and it's totally dead. I've had a couple that seemed like they were failing but it was something in the enclosures they work fine still in PC's. A drive from a 2010 Imac which has had so much use was making really load noises but carried on working, the mac itself finally died so I took the drive out and put in a dock and it's back to being quiet and working normal. I put it in a PC for extra backup. Finally the other day I installed Windows XP on an ide Maxtor 40gb drive which is over 22 years old which has had ridiculous amounts of use, that's load but it was from new.

Old Toyotas may not be very valuable in Australia but let me tell you something, they sell for a pretty penny in Switzerland. That car of yours would probably sell for at least 2000 francs. Toyotas of any age and condition are highly sought after here.
