Yes the movie is flawed. But the reason it has some strength is in the point that it makes: We normal people think that some rich selfmade tech person must be smart. But actually these people are just randoms that just so happen to be in the right place at the right time. They make it seem like they know things and that they are smart, but actually they are just to stupid to think about their actions twice and by pure luck the actions turned out to be good more often than bad. I think this is a point worth making. Most successful people are stupid. They just don't look stupid because of the surviviors bias.
@VeternovaYT
@VeternovaYT 5 күн бұрын
At that point, we’re assessing the quality of the point it makes. A film in and of itself can be poorly written ans it can still have a point to make. But when the text is bad, then the execution of any subtext, meta reference or irony cannot possibly be good. For example: Suicide Squad is agreed upon to be a bad film. But we can still say it has a message: that working together, despite our differences, can be what is best for everyone involved. That message exists even though the film itself is awful. The execution of the idea is what’s important, not the idea itself.

Ironically this is such a surface level read of glass onion that it misses the point entirely, "why does miles do X" isn't "because he's stupid" its because he takes short sighted impulsive actions that to a normal person would backfire, but obvious don't for him because he's had a life protected by wealth and luxury. And the points you point out are actual some of the moment where miles shows he's not just stupid, just very short sighted and self confident. "why does miles only shoot once?" because his target falls over covered in blood and if he takes the time to ensure they are really dead Blanc will spot him. "why doesn't he kick Blanc from the island/make a fuss about seeing a person he murdered?" because that would reveal him to be guilty instantly, the only reason a person would do such a thing is if they had no self preservation instincts at all. "how does Miles spot elements of a crime scene faster than blanc?" because he's the one who did it and is covering his tracks, and just because blanc doesn't say anything doesn't mean he didn't notice these details. I agree anyone who says "glass onion is dumb and doesn't need to explain itself because its stupid" should stop saying it, because while the film isn't up to par with knives out it still has layers if you look deep enough, the whole point is to judge things not based on hype and reputation because if you do, you'll think tech ceo's have to be geniuses to succeed and that details only exist if they are told point blank to camera.
@VeternovaYT
@VeternovaYT 6 күн бұрын
Whether or not a plan backfires has nothing to do with wealth and luxury. His stupidity, as the film advocates for, is the reason he gets away with things (which i find to be poorly justified). He has a right to refuse an uninvited guest. He owns the island and Benoit just shows up by surprise. It might even be more suspicious to allow him access. But who knows because Miles is dumb or something. Also, I made the same point about self preservation. Blanc literally didn't spot that the gun was missing. He even says "oh fiddlesticks". Blanc was with the body for a good minute and yet the fact that he's a world famous (competent) detective seems to have been forgotten by the writers.
@somanken
@somanken 6 күн бұрын
no his wealth shielding him from negative outcomes is like a core plot point, when his company makes a deadly new fuel and andy tries to reveal it to the world it fails because everyone lies on his behalf in order to stay by his wealthy side. He has the right to reject Blanc sure, but if he did it would be suspicious given Blanc is a famous detective, its also reasonable to assume miles literally thinks someone hired blanc as a prank (he even says as much in the movie) As for kicking out andy, what possible excuse could he use, "I invited her sure but she should be dead so I'm kicking her off the island" if he thinks it the real andy he knows the wrong move ruins him and given how bad he is under pressure his only recourse is to come up with a plan. (killing her when nobody can pin the blame on him) I forgot Blanc says o fiddlesticks, maybe it is a mistake that he doesn't notice the gun, maybe its him playing dumb like he does for most of the movie, maybe we are meant to assume he is preoccupied with the dead body, or its just bad writing for that scene.

Glass Onion wasn't good as a 'detective' or 'murder mystery'. If Ryan Johnson was trying to do the best murder mystery, he would have just adapted and Agatha Christie novel. Instead I think it's meant to be a deconstruction/parody of the genre. And whilst it may have turned out a bit sloppy, and with a tonne of plot contrivances, it's still a fun ride, that subverts expectations. My biggest issue with modern movies, is the predictability. 10 minutes in, you know the entire narrative. Because of this I'd sacrifice a little character realism, to have a plot that is unpredictable, that can properly build tension, because you really don't know what's coming next. Not that Glass Onion really does this, but it tries to. Knives out did it better imo.

I think the focus on the word "stupid" is a bit misaligned. Miles is not a drooling idiot. The idea is that Blanc calls him dumb because he's used to super complicated and intriguing cases, and he calls the situation dumb because he had to deal with someone who is super straightforward and makes short-sighted, simple decisions that happen to work out in his favor. After all, everyone assumes he is smart when all his success is always because of someone else. I like that it makes us question the tendency to assume the competence of successful people, which leads to a vicious circle of affirming this competence. I don't like your assumption that becoming a tech giant requires competence, that's the whole point of this story. He has stolen and manipulated his way into success. I also don't agree with the assumption that the writing is bad because by creating chaotic characters it leaves no clear idea of what would make a better or worse version of the movie. Why does there have to be a 'good' or 'bad' version of the movie? There are answers to most questions you raise about Miles as well: 1. Why didn't he shoot more than once? - I jot this down to a film-making. He is not a sharpshooter, and probably barely knows how to hold a gun. The film could have shown him shoot more than once, but miss the other shots. Also it's very clear that he did not want to be spotted being shot by anyone, and had to show up in time with the rest of the group. 2. Why did he not reject Blanc and Andi from showing up to the island? - And waste the opportunity to secure the kill on a secluded island without law enforcement getting involved. Which he attempts to do. It is the most obvious thing This is why I think the "stupid" word is not what should be focussed on, but the simplicity of every decision, and how little thought Miles put into hiding his illegal actions. This simplicity always made everyone assume more competence than was actually there. Even Benoit was fooled, believing there to be a greater mastermind, which is why he was so upset. Thanks for the video, this is the most I've ever reflected on this movie haha.

yeah quite a lot of rich people are pretty egregiously stupid. Musk, for example, is above average intelligence for sure but he is absolutely no genius. He can be pretty f'ing stupid. Some of his business decisions have been catastrophically dumb (see Twitter), some of the egregiously stupid things he believes (idiotic conspiracy theories, et cetera, that are easily disproven) are the sorts of things a normal person would be embarrassed to repeat in public, and these and other things prove he is kind of a dumbass and likely the most overrated intellect of our time. And this has nothing to do with politics. I've got friends who are legitimate geniuses working in tech and science and engineering who hate the guy and have been mocking him and his many dumb ideas ruthlessly since the 2000s. And they're always right, too. Musk overpromises all the time and doesn't understand the stuff he talks about. He takes credit for other peoples' work and loves to slap his name on things... swoop in on projects and companies that are already doing well and call himself a co-founder when he did nothing important... sort of like Steve Jobs. I'm convinced the bulk of his success comes down to luck. Most of it early on. And then... in America... once you are rich.. it's very hard to become anything other than that. The system is set up to make you richer. If wealthy CEOS were so smart they would not ever back or donate to Republicans, who are proven to be horrible for the economy, especially not authoritarians like Trump whose policies, if enacted, would be absolutely devastating and end up costing these people much MUCH more than whatever tax cuts saved them. You have to be pretty astoundingly ignorant and short-sighted to think getting a tax cut is better than having a healthy and stable economy and a functioning democracy (not to mention global order that opposes other despots like Putin and supports our allies and international trade, an environment that's not going to kill us all, a pool of workers companies can hire without having to worry about them all being deported, a healthcare system that will keep those workers healthy, infrastructure, security, sensible pandemic response, etc etc etc) No amount of tax cuts is worth giving up all of the above. We could cut Peter Thiel's taxes to 0%... and he would still lose more money under a Trump presidency than under a Harris one. So...yeah... he's acting very stupidly. All of the above being said Glass Onion is an incredibly stupid movie and Rian Johnson is a hack and his movies, especially the writing, sucks. The plot device about the Mona Lisa was so f'ing dumb and just perfectly representative of how Johnson has no respect for the work of artists superior to himself, and so feels the need to try and destroy it (just in this movie quite literally). Same as he's done with other films he's worked on.

It is deadpool, he breaks the 4th dimension and knows that all of this is just movies. Best off all, which I would totally agree with is this comment on reddit that explains that deadpool has nothing to do with the universe of marvel and everything to do with the different movie studios. Deadpool "timeline" dying has nothing to do with the timeline (hypothesis), but the "studio" scrambling and losing money because their biggest hit (Logan) is no more. Hence need to find that new "hit wonder". (the TVA - which is funny because it looks like a news/edit back room - laughing at deadpool as though he is good enough to save the studio). Take everything in deadpool with a pinch of salt, it has NOTHING to do with the marvel universe, it will not add or remove anything from the marvel universe. It is simply a piece to make fun of all the decisions made by the studios, actors playing the different roles ect. Heck, go read up on what happened to the movies regarding Blade, Electra and how we never got that Gambit movie to understand the piece "we just want a proper send off". If this movie is messy is because this movie wasn't made with the current young generation in mind. This movie makes 100% sense and nailed what it has set out to do. Wesley Snipes will always be Blade.

It's a kinda weird to see people arguing about Star Wars "canon", it seems like we're talking about the Bible or something. When I was a boy playing with my Star Wars action figures, the Galactic Empire joined forces with the Decepticons to destroy the Rebel Alliance while Goku was trained by Master Yoda on Dagobah. Meanwhile, Vegeta discovers that the Empire destroyed the Saiyan Planet with the Death Star and travels to Tatooine to find Obi-Wan Kenobi and form a partnership to kill Darth Vader. However, Vegeta was captured by Boba Fett and imprisoned in Jabba the Hutt's palace, which he escapes after transforming into the giant ape Osaru in a triple fullmoon night and completely destroys Jabba's palace, then Obi-Wan shows up in the middle of chaos and cuts off Vegeta's tail with his lightsaber. So relax guys, it's just a fictional space adventure universe created by a nerd in the 70's, you're taking this a little too seriously. We have a real war going on in Ukraine right now and another one going on in Israel/Palestine with serious chances of escalating into a conflict of catastrophic proportions and you are debating about space wars in fictional universes?? Sorry, but no. The writing is not actually "bad". The plot is ridiculous and meandering, not because of bad writing, but because the writers _wanted_ it that way. What you missed, and what this movie does, is it takes a _giant_ piss at Loki, at the TVA, at the concept of the multiverse, and at the MCU in general. The TVA - as an organization - is introduced explained in the movie, precisely because it expects that you did _not_ watch Loki, or the other 20 piss poor Disney shows, and you don't care about them. It makes fun of the Void, buy putting random nonsensical things in it (like the burried 20th century fox logo?). Deadpool is a character _famous_ for breaking the 4th wall, and this movie function almost more like a parody, then a serious movie. Its "plot" relies on genre troupes and sudden coincidences, and not hard logic. And it's a 100% conscious choice from the writers, because that's also how the comic works. Really the only reason the TVA is probably in the movie is for Wade to mow them down like a lawnmower. The "anchor being" is a not-so-subtle reference to Wolverine being the one who carried the X-Men franchise, and with his death the entire Fox Marvel is left without a lead hero (a.k.a. the universe dying), until Deadpool "resurrects" him, and "Fox universe" is fine again. Also Cassandra is the *least* one dimensional character in the entire movie, filled with one dimensional characters, and comic reliefs. She actually has tragic past, and a hatred for Charles, that made her into a psychopath, and bit deeper of a motivation, then the rest of the cast. She is anything but "evil for evil's sake".

@@VeternovaYT That's what a parody does. It amplifies the thing it parodies to hilarious level, that makes it funny. Plot and writing isn't the same thing. You can say that Deadpool & Wolverine has a weak _plot_ and I'll wholeheartedly agree. The movie doesn't need, nor want a strong plot. But writing _also_ includes every line of dialog, and every sudden turn of events. And those are good (admittedly not all jokes land the same, but most of them were funny). So no, the writing _is_ good. To me true canon is the GL six movies with a mix of expanding universe and some Disney material that I like that go between and before the movies but Return of the Jedi is the happy ending of Star Wars. Most problem the current canon is trying connect everything but not let it own thing and sometimes they to self insert themselves in the story like Acolyte.

Oh man , thank you for this sanity restoring analyses separate from all the shooting loads across the room hype we have been getting everywhere , this is an awesome , sober look at the flaws of this film , and i know , it's only supposed to be an excuse to have these two characters in the same movie and engages in satire more than anything substantial , and it succeeds in that respect , it's a silly , fantastical , fan service cartoon , but what;s more hilarious is that they want it both ways , they also want us to get emotionally involved in the awkward melodrama which had me howling , i didn't care what happened because i know there are zero stakes when it concerns these cheap trick for convenience multiverse paradoxes , why do i care about someone feeling all guilty about something when i know somewhere in Earth 3456 or whatever , another version exists that did save everyone they loved , it's so damn asinine now . Can we at least please follow some logic also , as you pointed out , this isn't writing , maybe with the jokes , but concerning a somewhat logical storyline that doesn't break it's own rules , this is some almost cynically lazy writing , they just do whatever they want according to wherever they want the story to go . Okay so , it is entertaining , but it holds zero weight , it's all spectacle without any substantive foundation , this trades on nostalgia more than gravitas , something people complain about in other films but give a pass here , i honestly felt i was watching a fan service YT video at times not a big budget Mcu film , and okay , that was fine somewhat but i was definitely getting anxious , if it wasn't for Reynolds quipping constantly i think i would have drifted off , and the cameos , i guess they are good if you like those characters , they could have been removed altogether , the movie could have been shorter , and it wouldn't have suffered for it . This one is tearing up the box office , it's totally braindead mainstream entertainment , yes , even with the violence and cursing it still plays safe and panders to a wide audience , so we'll get more of the same , but can we get some twist to end this multiverse bull poop , like , hey maybe , there was one timeline and reality all along , the rest were illusions , just somethign even remotely creative instead of this infinite universe nonsense . So yeah , none of it matters , this will satisfy most , they will love it and watch it numerous times , for me , i might watch it one more time and move on , i honestly felt the second one was more satisfying , then again , i don't really care about Wolverine , and i never liked the X Men , so i wasn't as engaged as some others would have been . Oh and that villain , oh my , what a joke , what an absolute joke , you know if you're going for satire you can make them have something resembling a sense of humor , or hey , maybe their motivation is something simple instead of destroying everything because they are having a hissy fit LOL . The movie will make billions , i'm sure they will be back , oh wait , is that a spoiler , really , with this multiverse nonsense , of course she will , that's not a spoiler

Every long running franchise will have them but you picked something that was not a plot hole or a issue at all as your first point? Hang it up.

I thought the cube McGuffin thing was pretty dumb. Wolverines cowl looked a little off. And a small handful of jokes were face-palm-y. I enjoyed the movie overall quite a bit. Oh, also the villain had insane power but also seemed to lose in a fairly simple way.

Looked off because maybe its a ridiculous cowl to begin with. It looked as good as it ever could in live action. Also she died from a device that can literally destroy universes….. also not 1 joke was face palmy like at all

Really like this review, this movie is thoroughly overrated and will age as well as spoiled milk I simply wonder why the writing has to be as bad as it will only benefit you to write an actually coherent script.

What about the writing was “bad”? Its the same writers as the previous films and this was without a doubt the funniest comedy to come out of Hollywood in years

@@jeffcunningham0389 As the video said, the actual manner in which anything happened in this movie was poorly constructed: there are contrivances and holes all over this script and it seems to me that the writers just did not care about cause and effect when writing this story. Even if one thinks the movie is funny, it doesn't do anything for the fact that the actual storytelling of this movie is broken, which if you are someone like me who didn't find the movie funny or someone who values coherency in the stories you consume more than comedy it can be quite irksome and make the movie unenjoyable.

You brought up a lot of excellent points in this video. I thought the movie was a really fun time, but I found that it does some stuff that it doesn't really explain, like how Laura and the others survived, and how Wase and Logan weren't atomised. I think the characters and the action do help make it more enjoyable, and its okay if your story is a bit more barebones wheb you have good characters, but it still brings up a bit of questions. Also even if it was perfect it woulnt save the MCU because its only one movie.

Wade and Logan weren't atomized because they *both* chose to act as circuits, Paradox said it would kill *one* of them. He never said it would kill them *both.* The entire point is that sometimes you don't have to try and do things alone As for Laura and the others, Alioth isn't a guaranteed death sentence - we literally saw that many of Cassa's henchmen got away unscathed after its first pass over their encampment. It attacks mindlessly, it's not a particularly smart monster. If you're talking about the injuries they took: Elektra can control her own autonomic nervous system to a degree which enables her to control her bleeding. Blade and Laura have healing factors. Gambit can stimulate his own cellular activity to increase his own healing capabilities.

@@ApexGale this right here is the problem , everything can be explained away with some excuse so why is there any urgency concerning the stakes involved , nothing is permanent in these stories , it's why when they deal with themes of loss nothing has any genuine emotional weight
