I like how these two characters are able to effectively collaborate, despite their vast differences, because they are both scientists.

I loved this episode... man star trek writing today is sooo bad. Only a couple of episodes of strange new worlds were kinda neat.

They missed a chance to use Spock's "stone knives and bearskins" line from City on the Edge of Forever. It would have been a nice homage.

An anvil that size probably isn't more than 300 pounds. A lot of human blacksmiths would have just picked it up too. Unless Data's radioactive alloy isn't the only heavy metal in common use on this planet...

Problem: "Your principle is that you fundamentally respect all beings. Well, you cannot punish/eliminate me even if I threaten other beings, because I am one of those beings you respect. If you tried, you would be in violation of that principle and therefore be a hjypocrite." Solution: "But by not eliminating/punishing you, you continue to threaten even more lives which I have a fundamental respect for. By eliminating/punishing you, I save more beings from being violated. Therefore it would still be in the service of my principle to take action on you, therefore I'm not a hypocrite." Bam. Easy.

In case anyone scrolls through KZbin comments for trivia: 1) This episode was directed by Gates McFadden. Hence the in joke about the episode being her fault at the end. 2) Marina Sirtis had to endure 4 hours of make-up for this episode... and because the water in the tub kept destroying the appliances, it also took another 8 hours to film the "waking up in shock" scene! Because she had such a rough time filming this episode, she threatened to quit the show unless they gave her quite a significant raise in her salary... but luckily, the network agreed.

I think this scene stops at the most interesting part. Where Data is in the transporter room and questioned about firing and he lies. That is the moment he really becomes human.

I always loves when this happens on shows: Person 1 on some comms speaker: "OH MY GOD THERE'S BLOOD EVERYWHERE, DEAD BODIES... THIS IS A DISASTER... WE'RE UNDER ATT...." Person 2: "Hmmm... interesting... I wonder what's going on... maybe there was a malfunction? Bah, I'm sure they're fine..." Like Data, bro, you were right there... you clearly heard him say "we are under attack" before he got cut off.

One of the times I wish they didn't have that conveniently timed transport. Seeing how Data would come to terms with executing a homicidal individual while not having the emotion to express the contradiction of upholding one's values while still portraying the feeling of conflicting convictions would have made for an intriguing storyline. Of course, I may just be saying this because I think Brent Spiner is an amazing actor who deserves more screen time, but I digress.
