I consistently hear from visitors that much of Charlestons appeal in regards to urban planning and architecture is its similarity to Europe. I’d think further developments with that intent would marry the growth to preservation. If new apartments mirrored the old boarding houses sparing no expense on fascia (like on market street) and were naturally zoned to facilitate community and commercial growth.

I visited South Carolina over this past summer. I couldn't get past all the Confederate crap all over the place and "Rebel" stores littered with Confederate propaganda. I won't be back.
@Dak36Ай бұрын
Please do not return. 8 million a year is quite enough. I have not seen any Confederate propaganda in my lifetime. Perhaps you might have liked the International African American Museum, Avery Institute, the Penn Center Museum, among other sites you will never see. There are also many historic sites to see about the Revolutionary War. Sorry you will miss those.

Well obviously you are a good person. I know that because you virtue signal. I'm sure someone like you not visiting Charleston will be a great loss to the city. Oh, and I'm sorry for you that Kamala didn't win. Have a nice day. It must be cold up north where you are from.

This is fascinating content, but I'm only 7 minutes in and not sure I can make it through Mr Morrone's wildly overdramatic speaking style and apparent inability to stop bobbing around the lectern and flailing his arms while speaking. Exhausting to watch.

29:29 “ real guys don’t wear shoes” i am certain as the proper man which i am shure you are this has been a purely sarcastic remark but if you should have meant even a word of what you said in anything but said sarcastic context not even your American nature would be excuse enough for that

I was fortunate to grow up in Point Breeze. We had 5 properties from the early 60s through the late 90s. My favorite home was on S. Lang between Reynolds and Penn. It has a tower and turret. In my opinion, Frick is the best park in the city. Great post!

>insert slavery Every time. That’s the kind of thinking that leads to promoting the city coffers and social program income at expense to architectural marvels enriching everyday lives of citizenry. For something like Charleston to exist building neoclassical, most likely it isn’t just local gov forcing only classical to be built, it’s also tax exemptions and loopholes, along with regulatory exemptions making 2-3 story ground-level spaces feasible without too much extraordinary cost. Multiple intra and inter organizational (labor, resource procurement (marble, brick clay), sculptural (applying sculpting and material sciences for pillars and facades external and internal) and management (building organizers, contractors) and city involvement

I appreciate that you acknowledge that many factors need to be considered. Think of the White House. It seems that many trees have been planted by presidents over time that have shrouded the building from view? This highlights the complications involved.😊😊

Its simple charleston will fail in creating a sustainable future because of their history. They wouldnt even allow discorse of have an open hearing on their sustainability initiative, and they clearly need people like me to show them how much change they need. we dont even have side walks. churches, bars, no activities for aspiring youth. lots of DUI money the list literally doesnt stop. why do you think no one likes to perform here , the people are unbearable . racism and entitlement everywhere

I saw a TV commercial this morning for Humana Health Care. As I am watching it, I look at the scenes and realize it was filmed in Piermont. You can see the entrance to the Village Hall and the balcony of the Turning Point music venue/restaurant followed by the gazebo in the park by the waterfront...what a coincidence !

We need to preserve older Charleston as a memory, a memorial and a reminder. If you know your pre-Civil War history, or even your pre-revolutionary war history, Charleston has a checkered past. The buildings that remain hopefully will remind us of how far we have come; let's not let history be whitewashed.
