St. Mary's is Church of England, the previous church (actually chapel) is centuries younger, probably 19th century and built by non conformists, neither Anglican nor Roman Catholic. Kidderminster cannot have a cathedral, it is a town, not a city. If the King granted city status, it could be upgraded by the Church of England Synod, but that's not a priority for Kidderminster
@RoadForksOffbeat9 күн бұрын
Thank you for the clarification! Kidderminster has such a rich history, and it's fascinating to learn more about its churches and their backgrounds.
@neilgodwin653112 күн бұрын
Kidderminster? Small? I live in the neighbouring town of Bromsgrove. Both towns are in Worcestershire, not part of Birmingham or the West Midlands conurbation but an ancient county with a significant role in English history. The Swan used to be called The Swan with Two Necks, I believe. That pub and Seven Stars had a reputation for being 'trouble' in the old days. The church with the 'complicated name' is easy to explain. It was built by non conformists, in this case I imagine Congregational or Presbyterian protestants. These two churches joined to form the United Reform Church (URC). The URC sold many of their churches like this one, as did the Methodists, because rates, maintenance and heating costs were so high. This particular church is now owned by the Christian Missionary Fellowship (CMF). Possibly the former URC have an arrangement with the CMF for mutual services. The URC chapel where I was christened is now a martial arts centre! My grandparents Methodist chapel is now flats, so a church in Britain is not always a church
