Good point but I don't have any PCI-E to PCI adapter with 2 PCI slots. My main PC with a Ryzen 3900X CPU has a motherboard (X470GTA) with 2 classic PCI slots - but this card will never fit inside the case... I have to remove the motherboard.
@rubberduck496618 күн бұрын
the bus is rather irrelevant as one is the 2d part the other 3d and this setup is more like a normal 2d accelerator combined with a voodoo card.
@O_mores18 күн бұрын
@rubberduck4966 Yes, it looks like a classic 2D + separate 3D accelerator setup but it's more than that. The 2D card is electrically connected to the 3D card - and it has only 512K video memory. Once you get the driver installed you can use 32bit high resolution and for this memory from the 3D card must be used.

Very interesting card, I appreciate you trying it with the 2 adapters at the beginning, I love those types of shenanigans where old and new hardware meet. I've ordered a PCI/PCIe adapter myself to play around with, mainly to see what I can get working on Windows 10, as well as if I can pass through PCI cards to a VM. Mine is one of those PCIe/Dual PCI adapters, hopefully that'll work the same as the single PCI version. I also saw an adapter floating around that allows sticking PCIe cards into PCI motherboards, I didn't buy it (yet), but it sure intrigues me.
@O_mores18 күн бұрын
There are some PCI-E to PCI adapters that come with a 5.25 internal rack and can fit 2 PCI cards. (medium size) I could use one of those racks for a PCI to SATA + a PCI sound card on a modern motherboard. BTW, you totally can mount a PCI-E card into a PCI slot with those adapters. Tested by me... For some video cards there will be a serious bandwidth limitation but for other devices won't be any difference.
@n.stephan984818 күн бұрын
@@O_mores There are some modern cases that have those vertical slots alongside the horizontal ones for mounting GPUs and such, those also seem quite viable for something like this. I'm getting a hotel room in a state where I don't know anyone, so I can do a bunch of research with no distractions. I bought a new computer specifically for this purpose - A Dolch portable pentium-II system. The significant thing is that it has full length PCI slots, so I was able to put an Evans & Sutherland OpenGL accelerator in it (not enough room for an intergraph Realizm, though), and still drive the internal LCD screen. It works out pretty well, but I'm sure there will be conventional laptops with good 3D acceleration available later this year. This will be an interesting experiment for me. Well, PCI-E Voodoo 2 is doable. Right now, you can use a PCI-E to PCI adapter and a Voodoo 2 will work on any modern configuration. @NexXxus86Ай бұрын
actually, its great for capturing as decent VGA capture devices are expensive, but what I noticed it that when I plug in my Voodoo into my 28" Asus I get a clean picture as well. I see it only a matter of the scaling, if the hdmi chip has an integrated scaler to use verious scaling methods then I can really see the benefits of these custom cards. Otherwise, just use a decent vga monitor on a regular voodoo.
@O_mores29 күн бұрын
I agree, the HDMI is more like a gimmick, unless if you have only one big gaming monitor with DP/HDMI ports. In this scenario it's better to get HDMI signal from your Voodoo rather than using a VGA to HDMI converter. I have two such converters and they are rather bad: one is outputting some analog garbage, and the other one has better image quality but is getting very hot.
@sdz-mods27 күн бұрын
@@O_mores it's not a gimmick, the HDMI signal from the card on an LCD screen is just perfect, with no loss whatsoever. Many LCD monitors have crap VGA input, and even the good ones aren't perfect, and they can never be. VGA signal was intended for CRTs, not LCDs. It doesn't carry any resolution information, it's just an analogue waveform, there will always be some "guesswork" and quality lost when displaying it on an LCD panel.

What do happened on 3DFX why do they stop?
@O_moresАй бұрын
Well, some bad business moves and competition killed 3dfx. First 3dfx wanted a business model like Apple - to produce and sell their own hardware. For this they acquired STB and and they made their own cards by late 1998. By doing this many Taiwanese producers like MSI, Asus, Gainward etc. sold more nVidia cards instead, this diminished 3dfx market share and they were eventually bought by nVidia.
