Grenfell was the consummate foil for so many wonderful characters - from the original St. Trinian's films to her one woman stage performances; dry, lcaonic witticisms abounded. I wish I had been old enough to have engaged her in conversation - I can only imagine that it would have been fascinating, & altho' an anglophile, she was very much a self-made British institutional parody. Who could not love such an endearing treasure ?

The cardigan! I have been to a number of very fine formal dinners at the University here in Cambridge where women in evening dress generally have it covered with a cardy ...

Glad to say they have three episodes of 'Face The Music' on BBC i player, two of the episodes have Joyce Grenfell in, the quality of the episodes look as if the programme was made yesterday. Really hope they will show more.

Hard to imagine she is in her early sixties here, not a line on her face, so elegant, very beautiful lady, Hinge & Bracket often spoke fondly of her in their stage shows, and they then would both sing 'I'm Going To See You Today', very sad Joyce lost her life to eye cancer. The eye was already beginning to go wrong when this was recorded.

I think even Joyce Grenfell would put in the shade, all the rubbish that passes for comedy these days. God bless dear lady, and rest in peace.

And, I think under-appreciated. Such a welcome surprise to see this. She was the highlight of any film she was in. And her books: so funny!

Who are you Edward311? Only people of a certain age will even know her name. There’s a recording of a song she does, sacrificing herself to her brother’s (?) children. Always makes me cry.

Beautiful singing voice, and such an elegant lady, hard to imagine she was in her early sixties here, not a line on her face, she always seemed ageless, beautiful yellow dress.

Oh,thank you for showing this. Joyce Grenfell was of a generation.........so understatedly funny. English to the core. Some of her characters were evident everywhere you looked in 1950's & 1960's England

One never grows out of Joyce Grenfell. She's every bit as funny now as she was then, and her comedy was never barbed but always gentle. I miss her.

I think the best and most accomplished performers draw one into their world and then one is absorbed by the narrative. Joyce Grenfell is certainly entertaining. Love many of her films too, always a pleasure to see her, a definite highlight.

Too funny! Reminds me of the time I was attending a lecture with friends and upon hearing the siren of a passing fire truck, to my horror, I remembered that I had forgotten to take out a cake in the oven set at 400F. Yes, it was blackened and solidifying into a brick with the appearance of cooled lava. A good recipe to replace tarmac.

She was so precious. A shame there are no comedians like that anymore. She played the quintessential English Lady so well.

She was a performer, but I think she played herself. She was a close relative of the Astors & grew up on the periphery of high society. She was a great observer & converted her observations into her performance.
