I saw this film when I was a child, I've seen it just a few times and i wasn't much interested on it. But now I see this again, I'm amazed of how deep is the story, this song and Frollo as antagonist. I mean, we see a man praying to God because he's disturbed by his desire for a woman! In a film for kids! Maybe I should rewatch the film again as an adult, and in French of course.

It is different because when you translate from one language to another you are not translating individual words but thoughts instead. I love this version because it’s the original language of the story and should be told that way

I like the English lyrics more. While it's touching in this version that Esme still has faith in a God her people don't traditionally believe in (Roma are traditionally Hindu), I think it speaks more of her faith that she's willing to ask God in her doubt to provide for her people. I also love the line, "Were You once an outcast too?" as she looks at the image of baby Jesus. That it's missing from the French version is a travesty.

I came looking for … okay, cause the version of this song on the film CD that I bought is called “Que Dieu aide les exclus” and the first line of the song is completely different than this version. “Seigneur tend l’oreille jusqu’à moi.” Having trouble finding that, so I’m going to keep looking, because that’s the version I always sang along to when I was growing up with this CD.

Such a beautiful stunning singing and language. Now why in the English version they couldn't use those words? What is so bad about the original words? Disney fucked up. Same when you hear Once Upon A December in Russian, beautiful but has no single mention of December.

I've long loved this movie as a child and now in my thirties, I visited Paris and saw Notre Dame today (2/20/22 - albeit it was temporarily closed off from entering). Remembered this song and felt so many emotions stir in me again. It really made me feel in awe of its Majesty.

Wow I love how much more vivid and profound these lyrics are. I especially love that instead of Frollo declaring “it’s not my fault, I’m not to blame” He asks “is it my fault?” I love the idea that instead of shifting the blame on to someone else, being Esmerelda, he’s willing to put the blame on himself for being sinful and it makes him all the more obsessed with capturing Esmerelda as a way to appease Heaven and have him absolved of his sins. And yet by the end he willingly falls deeper into his lust and ambitions. Damn this just got so much more tragic.

The original English lyrics don't seem super profound if you do not take them in the greater context of the song. The greater beauty of Hellfire comes from the fact that the lyrics are juxtaposed to the Archdeacon, Monks, and Robbed Apparitions singing in Latin. The Latin being sung by the is a modified, older version of the Confiteor, aka the Penitential Act, in which the person reciting acknowledges/confesses their sins at the start of a Catholic Mass. The prayer is continued after the opening scene with the Archdeacon and Monks and acts as a counterpoint to Frollo's lines and act as a window into his subconscious. For example (F = Frollo & A&M = Archdeacon & Monks): F: Beata Maria you know I'm so much purer than the common, vulgar, weak, licentious crowd. A&M: Quia peccavi nimis (That I have sinned) F: Then tell me, Maria, why I see her dancing there? Why her smold'ring eyes still scorch my soul? A&M: Cogitatione (In thought) F: I feel her, I see her. The sun caught in her raven hair; Is blazing in me out of all control A&M: Verbo et opere (In word and deed) This is also the case as the Robed Apparitions continue the prayer and this counterpoint by saying, "mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa", which loosely translates to "my fault, my fault, my most grievous fault", both replicating the prayer precisely and timing it with Frollo's escalating denial of his "fault". F: It's not my fault! RA: Mea culpa (My fault) F: I'm not to blame. RA: Mea culpa (My fault) F: It is the gypsy girl, the witch who set this flame! RA: Mea maxima culpa (My most grievous fault) Once you analyze the song with this in mind, it really shows the genius of this piece.

Wow, this is song is terrifying in any language. I'll be honest, I do kinda miss my favourite line "choose me or your pyre", because it's just so sinister, and really makes it clear how much he thinks this is somehow her fault. I love that this movie somehow got a G rating. Like, really? Your translation is pretty good, and really does get the point across. I just want to take a crack at it for funsies. Also, I mostly speak english, took a little french in school. The most disappointing part of this version is the cathartic last couple of lines, as in this version they don’t rhyme!!!! 😔😔😔 Most definitely the peak moment of the original song is this: “God help my people, the poor and downtrod, I thought we all were the children of God” 🥺🥺

As a french speaker, everything rhyme. "Entends pour mes frères Cette humble prière Car les miséreux Sont enfants de Dieu" That's how we rhyme in french.

Almost starts sounding like an incantation instead of a prayer blaming Esmeralda for his own emotions. Though actually blaming her for how he feels instead of taking the responsibility is worse. He's not constrained by vows of chastity, but literature is full of his type- secular power in a man who thinks he's pious and pure. To feel desire, Frollo, isn't wrong. How you handled it *was* . I'll get off my soap box now, sorry

"Make her mine" is not a correct translation for "Fias qu'elle s'offre à moi". A proper translation is: "Let her offer herself to me". "Offering" in a general but implicitly with a sexual connotation.
