Love that Brit bike sound. My Bonneville was made almost 20 years later but has that same irregular sound when cold. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6GZo4hmr5pnj7c

BSA motorcycles were top of the line. Expensive, yes. Worth the cost by far. Sorry that BSA died out.😢

The Manx has always been 2-3 notches above the rest of the single cylinders, and so was the price...

Beautiful bike! I remember the dealer near me (Honda/BSA) had some BSAs that looked like they'd been shipped as deck cargo on a submarine. Sometime in the late 60s, I believe.

Thanks for your comment! This particular BSA was an older British restoration, and was in this condition when I acquired it around 15 years ago. Restorations done in the UK back when these were still fairly plentiful and "cheap as chips" were not done to the extremely high "showroom or better" standards of today. Other bikes of mine on here were restored by me, some others were acquired already restored, and some are unrestored originals.

What’s that stupid exhaust about
@HumberNorton
@HumberNorton 10 күн бұрын
Billy: That "stupid exhaust" is actually the original factory exhaust system on the BSA B50MX. It's admittedly, a stupid system, an extra 25 pounds of chromed steel on a lightweight racing machine, and I have no idea what the "geniuses" at BSA were thinking while their whole empire was sinking in 1973. Maybe it had to comply with some noise regulations in the USA? Anyway, probably nobody raced their BSA B50MX with that double-megaphone system, and took them off. Then they got lost, discarded, etc. So the few with the original "stupid" exhaust are extremely rare and the exhaust system itself is worth $1000!

Nice build. Though I'm not sure if it is possible to fit a centre stand to a Manx frame. Nor can I see any of the frame fittings for oiling primary chain. Can't tell what the wheels come from. Anyway I'd say a Manx styled wideline featherbed framed, Goldie powered bike built in fashion of the late fifties and the sixties.

Had a Goldie In the 60S, and Johnny Rudge who raced the Royal Enfield factory bikes, offered me a Manx minus engine for £100. Couldn't afford it. Always think of it when I fill the car and it costs about the same.😢😢

I had put the bike up for sale and nowadays it seems everyone needs to see a "cold start." Truth is, most old bikes with carbs start easier from cold than from hot! I should've kept this one. What a nice old Sporty it was...

Icing on the cake? We ancients remember that the DBD 34 had first rate handling. Putting that fine motor into a featherbed is fun, but not really necessary. Here, Norton 650ss.

What a lovely sound. I road race a West coast hornet. And I just bought a 1966 Jan-Feb ET Hornet project. Still has the Handed Monoblocks and the ET coils. Quite rough shape as it had a rough life.

I thought that was a Gold Star engine ... I remember that when throttling off sometimes you'd get a whistle from the Exhaust ...we never worked out what caused the whistle... brings back memories of the 60s,,, Nottingham to Matlock Bath... cheers .
@HumberNorton
@HumberNorton 2 ай бұрын
That "whistle" sound you recall was what was known in the industry and hobby as the "twitter." It was a function of the cam overlap and the shape of the silencer and baffles within. And indeed, the stock Gold Star silencer has been referred to as the "twitter pipe" ever since.

The tank looks too small like the Hummer125 tank on some Sportsters. The room for your ass & a gallon of gas gets old and sometimes aggravating when you run dry and you are too old to push it to the gas station ⛽. Stopping for gas every 100 miles is annoying as well.
@HumberNorton
@HumberNorton 2 ай бұрын
All a matter of personal taste. The BSA Hornet was a race machine, pure and simple. It excelled at Class C racing (flat track, TT) as well as rough scrambles and desert. The tank was as big as it needed to be, so why add unnecessary bulk and weight? This example has a factory lighting kit added. The fiberglass tank was over 2 gallons (not one gallon as you stated), and looks in perfect proportion to the machine. I think most other vintage bike aficionados would disagree with you, but when you buy yours, you can always fit the 4- or 5-gallon UK-market tank off a Spitfire Mk II, which makes the bike look like a pregnant guppy...but that's just MY opinion.

Paul: I, like everyone else, agree those Federal-mandated 5-mph bumpers are unattractive. But with a near 100-point car (JCNA average of 99.875), you keep to absolute originality everywhere! It will be on Bring A Trailer in a few weeks, for sale on auction. So if you buy it, I will expect you to backdate it to 1973 bumpers! ~ Dave
