Not quite as good as Ohio State’s band, IMO, but better fight song (second only to Notre Dame’s).

I can definitely appreciate this as well, but being a band geek, I’m messed up. I was raised in a Purdue house and I dearly love the All-American marching band, but I am going to go to Ohio State which is not only TBDBITL but the best in the universe. But I appreciate this because my high school is in Notre Dame territory and has become the best combination of Notre Dame and Michigan ever... Blue and Gold.,.

@@will5412 It was like a sucker punch in the gut just as you enter the ring for a fight. How could you prevent it? The cut move being signaled by the director, not the drumline or drum major, was put in place long ago. Even well-trained musicians make mistakes. Those that cut too soon clearly heard the drumline's error, at, :30. The emotional effect of the error can be heard in the crowd and seen in the band's performance in the remainder of the vid.

The University of Michigan Marching Band was the very first college band to be awarded the prestigious Sudler Trophy and recognized as the top marching band in the nation by the John Philip Sousa Foundation. You can only win the Sudler Trophy once, so the school that wins it first is the most highly regarded, and that's the University of Michigan. lol It was John Philip Sousa himself that proclaimed that "The Victors", Michigan's famous fight song, was the greatest college football march ever composed. It was composed in 1898 by a University of Michigan student, Louis Elbel. "The Victors" was first performed publicly by Sousa's famous band with John Philip Sousa himself as conductor. So don't be jealous! We don't give a crap about other marching bands, because our band has the pedigree and accolades to back its superiority.
@camellane3310 жыл бұрын
Yes, the Sudler Trophy, which is awarded by the John Philip Sousa Foundation, is considered the Heisman Trophy of band awards, and Michigan was the very 1st college marching band to be awarded the prestigious trophy. Also John Philip Sousa himself proclaimed that "The Victors" was the greatest college football march ever composed. It was also first performed publicly by Sousa & his famous band.

USC has never won the Sudler Trophy! That means that it has never been recognized as one of the top college marching bands in the nation by the John Philip Sousa Foundation. On the other hand, Michigan was the very 1st school to win the Sudler Trophy. The Sudler Trophy has been described as the Heisman Trophy of marching band awards by the LA Times, and it was the Michigan Marching Band that was the very 1st college band to be awarded the prestigious trophy. lol

Compared to the size, sound, and complexity of drill of bands like Auburn, LSU, Florida State, Tennessee, et cetera, I'm not impressed by any of these Big Ten Bands I've seen thus far including Ohio State.
@jasonpuckett731311 жыл бұрын
Considering how most SEC bands are big, loud, boring and sloppy, I would disagree with you.
@camellane3310 жыл бұрын
I doubt you know anything about marching bands, because the Big Ten has been recognized most of any conference for its excellent marching bands by the John Philip Sousa Foundation. Michigan has the high distinction of being the very first college band to be awarded the prestigious Sudler Trophy, and a total of 10 conference schools have won the Sudler Trophy. That's 10 out of 12 Big Ten schools, which is by far the best of any conference. You can only win the Sudler Trophy once, so Michigan is the most highly regarded marching band in the nation according to the Sousa Foundation. The Foundation chose to honor Michigan's marching band ahead of all other college bands in the nation.
@alexmyrick753710 жыл бұрын
Big, sloppy, and boring are all words that describe bands like bama and Florida, sure, but the good bands in the southern United States bring power and complexity to marching band WITHOUT cutting out woodwinds like OSU. As for me not knowing anything about marching bands, how about I've been marching going on nine years now, and chose my school in large part due to its great marching band program. OSU is sloppy and does popular songs (something that is not indicative of a drum corps band like most southern bands), and Michigan is really small in size with a proportional sound. As for the rest of the Big Ten, I'd have to say Wisconsin holds the best band up there by far. And yes, I know what the Sudler Award is. Just because you used to be good at something doesn't mean you still are (see Michigan football). More of the SEC schools have won it in recent years as well.
@jpuckett35110 жыл бұрын
Alex Myrick TBDBITL "sloppy?" Uh, not quite.
@alexmyrick753710 жыл бұрын
Certainly. Compare it to the drum corps standard that Southern bands abide by, and it is very sloppy drill-wise, and musically atrocious. Of course the fans love it, but the vast majority of them know little to nothing about music.

I didn't know Michigan's marching band had clarinets! Our high school marching band does too, but only because it's so tiny. :) But obviously college level clarinetists sound exponentially better than high school, so it's cool that they have them.
