As an MMB member myself, I acknowledge the caliber of the OSUMB. In fact, I think we should all take the time to recognize the quality of ensembles the Big Ten has and appreciate what each of them bring to the tradition and pageantry of the best conference in collegiate sports.

@@will5412 It was like a sucker punch in the gut just as you enter the ring for a fight. How could you prevent it? The cut move being signaled by the director, not the drumline or drum major, was put in place long ago. Even well-trained musicians make mistakes. Those that cut too soon clearly heard the drumline's error, at, :30. The emotional effect of the error can be heard in the crowd and seen in the band's performance in the remainder of the vid.

I was in the MMB flag corps 75-77. I remember well the sweeps on Elbel Field until your feet were burning. Practicing the 212 beat per minute entry was a major rush. All worth it to hear the Maize and Blue faithful roar when we exited the tunnel, each weekend. I've seen countless marching and corps bands,overall the MMB is right up there with the best. I dig the changes the band has made. The lock step toward the north endzone is very impressive. Keep up the OUTSTANDING work! YUBA and GO BLUE

The University of Michigan Marching Band was the very first college band to be awarded the prestigious Sudler Trophy and recognized as the top marching band in the nation by the John Philip Sousa Foundation. You can only win the Sudler Trophy once, so the school that wins it first is the most highly regarded, and that's the University of Michigan. lol It was John Philip Sousa himself that proclaimed that "The Victors", Michigan's famous fight song, was the greatest college football march ever composed. It was composed in 1898 by a University of Michigan student, Louis Elbel. "The Victors" was first performed publicly by Sousa's famous band with John Philip Sousa himself as conductor. So don't be jealous! We don't give a crap about other marching bands, because our band has the pedigree and accolades to back its superiority.
@camellane3310 жыл бұрын
Yes, the Sudler Trophy, which is awarded by the John Philip Sousa Foundation, is considered the Heisman Trophy of band awards, and Michigan was the very 1st college marching band to be awarded the prestigious trophy. Also John Philip Sousa himself proclaimed that "The Victors" was the greatest college football march ever composed. It was also first performed publicly by Sousa & his famous band.

The average person who is not in band would rarely notice the mess up in the beginning....I didn't until it was pointed out. For 95% of the fans it's about the fight song itself and the M formation moving across the field as the instruments boom. This sends chills through me everytime I watch this or witness it live. The march and fight song rule regardless of mess ups...and that is all that matters to most people who view this.

@nick5man5 1. There was a new director this year. 2. There were 110,000 screaming fans that made it a hell of a lot more difficult to hear the percussion cadence command. 3. There was probably some confusion within the percussion section. 4. This is probably the only time this has ever happened, and it has most certainly not happened since. 5. The rest of the pregame show went swimmingly. Just listen to those trombones at 2:33! Stellar.

@mwshephard The Drum Line Screwed up the Cadence. They played the part where they were supposed to move to early and wrong, thus they had to do it twice. The first people to move heard it and moved, everyone else knew someone screwed up and waited, thus making it seem they screwed up. The Drum Line is the one at fault.

At the end of the season, watch the Bayou Classic with Southern & Grambling. Watch Southern's band. They march that way because Michigan's directors had an exchange with them, and that style was taught to Southern. Now Southern has taken it through the roof with what they do, but since I've been watching them in person since 88, Michigan is the BEST NORTHERN Marching Band for their style, showmanship, choice of songs, and for their class. They change with the times and truly are beloved. GO BLUE

@Rockmangoes Wrong, wrong, wrong.....If you remember correctly, Lloyd Carr retired. He wasn't forced out due to lack of performance. He resigned because he felt it was in his best interest, as well as that of the program. What gets lost in the vitriol is how OSU and UM have each pushed one another to excel. What makes this rivalry so dynamic, is what has made these programs so great. The intense desire to achieve, and the indomitable will to win.

We don't play it twice, that's the way the song goes, it goes into an interlude and back into it for one more verse. When you have the best fight song in the land, why stray from it. Look up Temptation and the Hawaiian War Chant, we play those throughout the game as well. We have a sick tradition with Temptation.

@RandomSpewBros: My high school band director was UM's drum major for three years in the late 70's. His first game against Northwestern, the field was soaked. When he broke through the block M, he slipped an slid fifteen yards. The crowd was laughinhg their as*es off. Even in the early 90's, he'd hear someone say at least five times each year they once saw UM's drum major once slide 15-20 on his ass.

I'm not saying I like Michigan (Well, I don't.) , but I defiently respect them and wish them the best in the coming year not only in football, but in other sports too.
