What is the reluctance to switch from 10 to 11? My old devices incapable of running Windows 11 (typically running Windows 10 in 32-bit mode with 2 GB RAM, slow CPU, and no TPM) have become pretty darn useless, barely fast enough to run KZbin without hesitancy. You wouldn't put up with such a spec in a phone. A typical Android or Apple phone has far more RAM, far more CPU cores, loads of storage, and is always 64-bit.

If one doesn't use MS online services (Office, cloud storage etc) then one should be able to opt out of forced MS account login yet local login is not possible in Windows 11. The fact that they don't allow users to operate without being logged into MS account breaks user trust. It Doesn't really matter what Microsoft says they do or don't do with user online data when people cannot trust what MS says.

I'm not at all surprised at Win11 less than expected market share. Microsoft has turned Windows into adware/spyware, and on top of that Microsoft unreasonable hardware restrictions will create a huge number of useless PCs. I suspect more and more people are/will install Linux on that "useless" hardware. I tried Linux on one of my laptops that doesn't qualify for Win11 and I liked it so much I purchased a new Dell XPS 15 that came with Win11.. I installed Linux on a second SSD making the machine dual bootable, Win11 & Linux. I'm so happy with Linux I rarely boot into Windows (once a month so it can get updates). The next year will be interesting to how everyone else handles this Microsoft indiscretion.
@tedcalouri269418 күн бұрын
TPM requirement is I am sure a part of the equation but I hear more discomfort with how invasive Win11 is. From forced login to Microsoft account to eminent threats of the shark jumping Recall "feature", people want their computer to be THEIRS not Microsoft's and the overt shift to big brother invasive features by Microsoft has lead to an exodus. The only way one can have their own computer in 2024 is to avoid Windows 11 altogether.
@paracyntrix18 күн бұрын
There is one simple obvious solution… Have Win 11 Home as single user license without TPM reqmt. Have Win 11 Business with multiple user license with TPM reqmt. Why Microsoft doesn't want to take this route? I don't get it. Currently, people will need to replace their hardware. That's not making Microsoft any more money. In the other way, people will still use their OS.

This issue really doesn't impact large organizations, because they are leasing PCs for 3-5 years or simply replacing them after a similar period. Thus, anything they are running will handle Windows 11 unmodified. This really only impacts small businesses and home users who don't upgrade as frequently, though there are still a lot of such users. However, in a way, Microsoft is right to push OS-level encryption. The problem is they are doing it in the most self-serving way possible by trying to force a Microsoft account, even if that mitigates the problem of lost encryption keys due to hardware failure. It's the same story with One Drive. A good idea, but making it mandatory feels like it's more about the lock-in than helping users. Fortunately, thanks to government restrictions on PCs in secure areas, there will always be ways around all of that for Pro/Enterprise versions of Windows. However, that still leaves the CPU issue. I do think Microsoft should back off on the CPU requirement, as Skylake and Kaby Lake CPUs are more than adequate to run Windows 11. I'm running 23H2 bare-metal on an i7-6700 system (Dell Optiplex) and it runs easily as well as Windows 10 did. It encodes video, handles light NAS services, etc. like a champ, and it has a TPM 2.0 chip in it. There are a ton of these machines that would be perfectly fine that will end up as e-waste or continue to run unsupported Windows 10. Simply backing off on the CPU requirement would go a long way IMO and still not hurt their "security profile"
@Lord-Sméagol18 күн бұрын
"Skylake and Kaby Lake CPUs are more than adequate to run Windows" My i7-3930K and E5-2697-v2 are more than adequate ... even an old Dell Optiplex 790 with 3 GHz i3 2c 2t can cope with office & web!!!

@@Lord-Sméagol Agreed. I recently sold my i7-3770 system and it was running 23H2. For average web surfing and playing videos, it was perfectly fine, but I could feel it chugging at times where my i7-6700 did not. Not much, but enough that it was starting to become noticeable. For the most part, I would say that if it runs Windows 10 competently it can run Windows 11 about as well.

@InhalingWeasel18 күн бұрын
@@pyiffer Apparently Tim Apple is focusing on gaming more lately, convincing companies to start porting their games natively to macOS like Cyberpunk. There's also some wine-based tools so I guess if the hardware can handle it, gaming on Mac may be as close as linux to finally happening.
