I treid to grow some last winter indoors. I had thrm in some soil that i made. Perlite, sand, composted forest products, and coir. I lost a bunch to (i think) fungus. They seemed to grow very slowly. They were put outdoors in the spring. I wonder what i did wrong?

I find when growing indoors things can become stagnant sometimes. If there is poor air circulation, in combination with possibly too much watering it can lead to damping off. This restricts the roots, causing seedlings to grow very slow or stop. Another thing it could be is not enough UV light as in not enough sun or improper lighting, which can cause the stems to not thicken, again making it susceptible to damping off. If the room temperature is too cold it can also cause it (though Douglas fir shouldn't need extra heat). If those aren't a problem, then too much compost or the source of the compost... Sometimes they can be very high in micronutrients, creating nutrition deficiencies or contain herbicides, so I try to keep it in low percentage especially during seedling stage. I hope that helps any. Thanks for the comment and let me know if you have any more questions!

What do you use fireweed for?
@naturewithus78283 ай бұрын
Fireweed has many benefits. It is an attractive native wildflower, attracting pollinators, and helpimg reclaim eroded or disturbed areas. It's also a good edible and medicinal plant for migraines, skin conditions, stomach issues, etc.

is the baby tree need full sunshine?and can you pant a noble fir from seed?thank you!
@naturewithus78283 ай бұрын
I do part shade, or sun part of the day because they naturally grow under the cover of the understory and only reach full sun when they're taller. So full sun would be a bit much at this stage for this species. And yes, all conifer species can grow from seed in a similar way as this, including different types of fir. I'll be releasing a video shortly of growing subalpine fir from seed, which should apply to noble for as well. Thanks for the comment!

Unfortunately not at the moment because it's more complicated to ship seeds internationally. But will let you know if that changes, thanks for asking.

If I want to plant directly into the dirt outside should I plant them in the fall or spring in the pacific nw? Thank you!
@naturewithus78283 ай бұрын
I'd plant them out in the fall so they will stratify outside over the winter and come right up early in the spring. Thanks for the question.
@redbaron89893 ай бұрын
Awesome so would you plant them when daytime temps are below say 60? Or when would you plant in the fall? Should I just loosen areas of dirt then just lay the seeds on top of the ground and not not even lightly rake the area after planting? Any need to fertilize? Just trying to grow fireweed along the edges of our property for honeybees. Thank you 🙏🏻 you have been EXTREMELY helpful!
@naturewithus78283 ай бұрын
No problem! Sounds like a cool project. Anytime in the fall is fine, but to be really ideal, late fall before things start freezing. Yes rake/agitate the soil and just put the seeds right on top. If they start blowing away, you can rake them a bit. Fireweed needs light and agitated soil to germinate.

Do you start them indoors /greenhouse or just outside?

I started them in an unheated greenhouse but they should probably be fine to start right outside. Thanks for the question

Great video. You can also use flats that have slits in the bottom for excess water to drain out. Then when you are ready to transplant you can cut into the soil the seedlings have rooted in and lift them out with a small spatula and retain the soil and roots.
@naturewithus78284 ай бұрын
Absolutely. I do something similar to that in another video, planting right into roots and cutting them, but yes your idea works as well. Letting them develop roots helps for clean cutting. Thanks for the comment!

So cool! I want to plant a bunch for my honey bees. Makes awesome honey. Thank you soooo much for the tutorial! I was wondering if you have had actual success with the seeds germinating and growing fireweed plants and if so how successful? Also is it best to plant in the fall or early spring?
@naturewithus78284 ай бұрын
Glad you liked it! Yes, the seeds I gathered grew very easily. They can be planted in the spring, they just need to be stratified for three months in the fridge or outside first, or simply plant them outside in the fall, so yes, either way works. the problem is...............HOW do you separate the seeds from the fluffy feather stuff? or is that impossible? just trying to collect a bunch this summer and then sow them this winter
@naturewithus78284 ай бұрын
Good question, you don't need to, but if you must, for large amounts, I use a long bolt with chains on the end in a bucket, powered by a drill
@Stopmeghost4 ай бұрын
I'm reading that you can just rub the fluffy seeds on a sieve or screen and that will separate the seed from the fluffy part.
@naturewithus78284 ай бұрын
@@Stopmeghost Ah yes, perhaps I'm overthinking it. the chains for large quantities and hard chaff attached if any, and the sieve works pretty good if you just have fluff and seed. It depends on the seed though, works well on goldenrod, haven't tried the sieve for fireweed, the hairs may be a bit long for it but give it a try!

Hi there - thanks for this video. I'm wondering are these growing wild in your area or did you purchase the seeds? I'm in the U.S. and am not in a zone where they grow in the wild, nor can I find any seeds for purchase online. I did however, find a U.K. site that did sell eyebright seeds but they are not in stock. currently...any advise would be much appreciated, thank you!
@naturewithus78285 ай бұрын
Hi there. Many thanks. Yes they're naturalized in my area. I have lots of eyebright seeds, but can't ship to the States unfortunately because I'd need a phytosanitary cert for that. Yes, I know of the exact site you're talking about! I'll keep an eye out for any others!
@Bill-c3b5 ай бұрын
@@naturewithus7828 Oh lucky for you lol :) Well thanks for the response. And I only know about the phytosanitary certificate requirement because just last week I looked up a Canadian site that sell of a specific wheat grain I'm looking for, and an additional $42 was slapped on to my shopping cart! And the product itself was only $2.99! Needless to say I did not complete that order!

How do you go about planting the seeds? Do you need to bury them?
@naturewithus782811 ай бұрын
They need light to germinate, so direct sow on the soil surface without burying. Can also start in flats. Keep moist. Good question!

Do these seeds need to be stratified with sandpaper? I just collected some seed from my trip up to the Keenwena peninsula in MI. Thank you for the info

Hello, do you mean scarified? They are too small and hard to hold. Internet source says they need to be cold stratified for 4 weeks before sown. I want to try to sow them in spring.

No need to scarify with sandpaper, that's more for larger seeds. Just cold stratify as mentioned above
