there is no comparison presented. Underpainting takes twice a long to complete the work

Great painting! Do you varnish your painting after it’s dry? If so what do you use since it has both acrylic and oil?
@MazArtStudio2 күн бұрын
I use Gamvar gloss varnish by Gamblin which is flexible enough to use once the oil is touch dry and works in acrylic too.

You painted the non-underpainted one like a red-headed stepchild... it seems like it would have more depth if more glazing or an alla prima technique were used. The underpainted one definitely has more depth and weight to it.

And please tell us and I apologize if it's already been asked exactly what do you do when your oil painting is dry then to preserve it? The other thing I'd like to ask is how do you know exactly when an oil painting is actually completely dry and ready for finishing?
@MazArtStudio17 күн бұрын
I use gamvar varnish which you can use when the painting is touch dry (a week or two) because it’s flexible. Other varnishes you need to wait 6-9 months sometimes longer.

I have a question, how do you decide what colour to use for an underpainting? i notice that people always use burnt umber for an underpainting. for when im in art school my lecturers taught us to use orange and burnt umber for the underpainting. I wonder if its because we are trying to achieve a warmer final product? or what if my reference picture is very cool toned? should my underpainting be cool colours?
@MazArtStudio27 күн бұрын
It’s personal preference for an underpainting. The burnt /raw umber or other earth tones are often chosen because of their fast drying times which works well for an underpainting but you can change things up. Eg use cool tones or warm tones. Some do cool tones because their painting has cool under tones but some will choose cool under because their painting is generally warm and they like the contrast. Typically for me I like the raw or burnt umber because it’s will go with most things and suits portraits still life and pets etc. again it’s all personal preference so feel free to experiment
