I've got some rudimentary skills with it, it's been years since I practised prior and I had just a bit of time. But I'm satisfied with being able to do just a bit with it, I have lots of other weapons I train with at times, and I'm more focused on empty handed skills. I like to mix it up and share both what I'm best at and stuff that I have very basic level in, I wouldn't say I can't do anything with sanjiegun, just not something I'm very skilled with, fun to practise and I think the mix of solo and sparring footage makes this video a decent watch.

Two take aways from this vid : All the strikes you did would be more effective (less telegraphed and more powerful) with a basic stick. This thing is slow, telegraphed and doesnt carry over weight of the body into strikes. If you are training for larp - ok. If its supposed to be realistic.. you were telegraphing strikes to LEGS with a stick on a rope.. in exchange to possible counters from a sword... i would take those leg hits all day just to leave you with one more breathing hole in your chest..
@ZenDragonYoutubeChannel
@ZenDragonYoutubeChannel 10 күн бұрын
I am training with this for 2 reasons: 1 to challenge myself, 2 for fun. Maybe 3 reasons, as using this makes using a nunchaku or a staff much easier. But if you dedicate yourself enough to mastery of this weapon, it looks a lot more powerful and less telegraphed, I've learned a bunch of weapons AND I've spent more time developing my empty handed skills (striking and grappling)... in addition to this, I'm at a point in life where I balance KZbin content with working as a pedagouge and being a father to a 5 year old, so time is limited.... I don't think this is the most practical weapon and particularly in this day and age, I think there are better alternatives for self defense, but I do like that it covers multiple ranges, but before you fully judge this weapon look for some more videos, you'll find someone who's mastered it or is at a high level.... msot people don't share their skills online, unless it's beyond the rudimentary or intermediate level (which I think is a shame, but that's a digression).

@@ZenDragonKZbinChannel hmm, i'd still argue its a subpar weapon in any day or age, but fuck that, congrats for finding time to practice either way ! I havent had time for training for some years now, probably wont have for another few (kids, work, hustle, i get it..) , maybe thats why my first comment came of a bit bitter, i wish i could train too, at the same time seeing someone training on useless exotic weapons pisses me of even more because time is such a comodity and it seems like you're wasting it here.. but thats just envy i guess :D i myself would too spend days throwing knives or some shit if i could :D I'll watch your other videos on more popular weapons tho, good luck ! P.S. for real tho, it seems like you got too comfy in point fighting style, yes its sparring, yes its play, but bottom line is always FIGHT, struggle to kill and not get killed. If you'd train with that in mind - you would NEVER open yourself to counters by hiting legs like that. You'd be forced to find better ways to attack, and thats creativity, play, fun part. Have fun man !

@@martynaskrivaitis1961 My time for training is more sporadic and limited than it seems. In terms of recorded sparring, these days, it usually all takes place on a signle day where I get to plan meeting with several friends and record a bunch... that's been the case only once this year, I still have a bit of unedited sparring footage from last year though where it was prob 2 times or more. As for this weapon, I just felt like moving and had some spare time so I practised some of the stuff I knew wiith the 3 sectional staff but hadn't done in years for like 5 minutes... and then recently I learned to throw a staff while it spins in the air and grab it, so I tried that 2ith the 3 sectional staff.... so I did like 3 recordings about a minute long each, then later on downloaded a 3 sectional staff sparring video I'd uploaded quite a while back and created the video from it. :) I go to the gym about 4-5 times a week and in between my sets of weights or pulls up, I sometimes shadowbox... if not I'll stretch or do stuff like carthweels, or practise martial arts with the staff which is there... then on my way from A to B on my bicycle I sometimes stop to practise a bit of parkour which I've been learning this year. This week is vacation, so 2 days ago I was allowed to be alone for a few hours, while my wife and son went home, so I practised and recorded some parkour. When I feel I've been too inactive, sitting on the couch, I'll do stuff like spiderman crawling/cartwheeling/crabwalking and such to the fridge or bathroom... that way I get in some cario and get to practise movement and maintain my ability to move. I turn 40 in a few weeks and am motivated by wanting to maintain my fitness, martial arts, parkour and athletic abilities when I hit 50, after that I'm shooting to maintain it when I turn 60.... knowing it's more easy to maintain than develop, but if I keep consistently training even if just a bit, I'll gradually learn new stuff along the way..

Zen, tri sectional staff is one if my favorite training aids. I wish I had one in hand to record myself using one for you. I'm guessing you are very new to using one, so no judgement. I will say your movements are clumsy and slow, to really get any effect out if a trisectioned staff, you really have to get it up to speed, otherwise it's just floppy dead weight. I have a few pointers for actually fighting with one though. 1. Don't, not only are the ineffective as fighting weapons do to their complexity, even the padded ones can be very dangerous when sparring because of the velocities the tip can get to. 2. The best way to spar with them is to treat them as a training aid for your partner. Hold each end stick by the chain end so that you have two sticks and a center pole. The pole us your guide, it allows your partner to measure center lines and can act as a target for how to effectively counter strike. (If they can perry and strike that pole, that is a propper counter attack but if you can interpose their weapon, with your rear or lead stick, they have done something wrong. Finally, if you want to train with one, just for the pretty movements, you should start with bo staff. And you should start with the basic movements before trying g thevspins and tosses. Having helicoptered one of those things across my face and back of head at full speed, trust me, you really want to be able to master all of the long staff moves first.
@ZenDragonYoutubeChannel
@ZenDragonYoutubeChannel 10 күн бұрын
Thanks, I don't think I need to watch you using one, as I've seen Jet Li use it in movies and many performances with it from people who've dedicated themselves to training with it consistently. I know what high level use of this weapon looks like, I'm at a rudimentary level, which even what I can do comes from being able to use a staff not to mention a nunchaku. I have never trained with one consistently and probably used it maybe 10 times or something, since getting it maybe 10 years ago or I dunno. Based on how I prioritise this weapon compared to other martial arts skills, I feel good about being able to pull off just a bit with it, eventhough what I can do is limited and not that well executed. I also think it's a shame that most people who share what they can do, will only share what they're best at, I guess for fear of critcisim, which creates this idea that you should just give up if it doesn't look perfect, or that there isn't a process to attaining mastery.... honestly, I probably won't develop my skills further with this weapon, if it happens it's incrementally over the next decades, as I focus on many other things in my traning.... but I do think people need to get the message that it's okay to do something for fun, and it's okay to be decent or a beginner only and not great at something... you shouldn't just stay in your comfort zone of what you do best. :) As for using it in sparring, I think it's a fun challenge and for me more importantly, it's an opportunity to create content that there isn't much of online, so that's why I did it, but I would not seek to use this in combat... for self defense a tonfa or sai or another basic blunt force weapon would be much more practical, though I'd rather be able to use empty handed skills or situational awareness to survive.

At 4:27 I go over what problems were caused by the gear. The shinpads make the legs a slight heavier but not noticeably. Great combination of styles but there's multiple ways to skin a cat. If it's one on one where you can maintain distance and the consequences of going to the ground is lower (particularly with BJJ in your game), then some style of kicking is great to have developed, for self defense it's always good to be able to do more, but using hands allows you to take a step at any point if needed to evade, or run off even... Ultimately it also depends on how the person si able to utilise the style, physical attributes and mental capabilites can make one more suited for one style over another... def need both striking and grappling though. :)

Appreciate the advice Artemio. When sparring with animal style fists, I tend to create a lot of distance, this footage is a bit old, I could have circled or sidestepped more, my footwork was probably a bit linear. But due to the risk of eye pokes with this type of fists, I tend to strike out of distance with the hands unless I target the body and use the hands just as a distraciton to set up Kung Fu kicks. However, soon I'll be putting out a video with a mix of different types of sparring I did in one day a while back... and there's somes street fight and self defense sparring in there (self defense with a chair used as improvised weapon, and 4 vs 4 chaotic street fight recording) and especially in self defense sparring you'll see close range fighting. In this situation, there is no need to wait. You have to take the initiative by attacking with horizontal blows from left to right. I had a similar experience with a thief. I knew that he had the advantage of seriously injuring people easily. with each attack. While I only had distance in my favor, being able to hit from further away. with blows that can break bones. when one uses nunchucks in a real fight. the person is somewhat perplexed for a second or two. Well, no one expects it. that. It is also something that is usually only seen in movies. not in the streets. then you have to take advantage of those seconds of perplexity to attack immediately. This made him change his defiant attitude. a defensive attitude. He retreats when he sees that the nunchakus can reach him from further away. practically. not giving time for the other person to "direct" the fight. because one is at a disadvantage. and it is not about doing a round or a movie duel. you have to give a good blow. that upsets him. in my case. seeing that he had his leg forward. I could break his knee. (iron nunchucks). and ran away because you don't know anyone. while the people on the street. they know each other. and more people may come to hit you

I've gotten so many more ideas for ways to use this wall... also got a dishwasher (as the machine is right behind the wall) parkour/martial arts video, recorded a while back in this area of my house.... maybe I'll upload that this weekend, not sure yet what I'll upload. My son turns 5 this Monday, and one of the celebrations is tomorrow, so that'll be my focus and I'll upload something Sunday :) Got plenty of finished videos to pick from :)

This is very funny and creative. Ranzou from Double Dragon next! Or maybe Shiva from Streets of Rage!
