I left Atsugi 54 years ago after two and a half years with VQ1 squadron as an air intelligence officer. We lived off base the first year, but got Navy housing in Yokohama for the remainder of my assignment. Never took the train then, but maybe it’s better now. Then, it was an hour plus drive. It was worth it, though, because we had snagged one of the very few single family houses at Yokohama Navy Housing on a bluff looking over Tokyo Bay and with an occasional view of the top of Mount Fuji from the rear of the house when smog was not terrible. We were walking distance to Yokohama Navy Exchange and Commissary. And streetcar into downtown Yokohama. The commute was lousy, but about a third of my time I didn’t have to drive it. That’s because about a third of the time I was at our squadron’s detachment in Danang Vietnam. In the late 1960s, NAS (not F) Atsugi was mostly using buildings leftover from the war. Functional, but nothing like the modern facilities at NAF in the videos. Our youngest daughter was born at Army Hospital Zama. She had her 55th birthday last month. I was a draft dodger who joined the Navy instead. I separated out after my time with VQ1 was finished. During the two and a half years with VQ1, we lost 54 guys. 31 when North Korean MIGs shot down PR21 in 1969. And 23 when PR26 crash landed at Danang Airbase a year later.

Was on USS Midway VA-115 1981-83 , VA-185 1986-89. When in VA-185 our XO had us bring Motorcycles if we wanted. Had my Harley Davidson there then. We rode all over the place.

I miss Japan. My dad was stationed at Atsugi twice in 1968-1972 i think and again in 1986-1989. I attended Shirley Lanham and my brother went to Zama high. Had lots of memories and made friends throughout the years. I know some buildings are still at the same locations (Theater, McDonald's and the Chapel). Hope to visit Atsugi next year with my family.

My father was stationed Yokosuka, and I lived in Yokohama. My first 5 years of School were in Japan. I had a Japanese nanny who took me everywhere, bathhouses, Driving School, basically the whole Japanese experience. I loved it and want to go back eventually. Hiroko (nanny) came to the States with her family and hung out with us many years later. Now my Son has received his orders for Atsugi. He is very excited and will subscribe to your channel. Thanks for the wonderful videos!

Hey I just found out I’m getting stationed in Atsugi and I’ve been watching a lot of your videos (really helpful thanks!) would you recommend living near base or commuting from Yokohama?
@usedgucci9604
@usedgucci9604 Жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you so much! I’d say it really depends on your situation and preferences. Most people opt to live close to base. I personally found it worth it to commute from Yokohama- there are endless things to do, as opposed to Atsugi where activities are limited. Plus it’s much easier access to Tokyo or bullet train stations. I also don’t mind the commute because I listen to a lot of audible while i train/walk so you can use it to read and exercise as opposed to a pure time suck. A few things you may want to consider- if you’re on call a lot it could be a huge pain for you to go back and forth and you may want to live close. If you plan to get a car, parking will probably be much more of an expense in the city. If you are married, and if you have kids, consider that there is less of a support system the further away from base you go (less access to friends, babysitters, pet sitters, English speakers, etc). But overall for me, I have just my husband, no car, no kids, and I would recommend Yokohama for sure!

Hate Japan so far I’m here on pcs order Fought tooth and nail to get my wife in my orders, just to be told she cannot join me due to her medical history, she had anxiety almost 10 yrs ago and now I’m here alone. This is the worst experience I’ve had in the military over 10 yrs of serving and I think this might be my last one.

Hi Justin, I’m really sorry you’re going through this. Thanks for sharing; you’re definitely not alone in having a difficult time in Japan. It can be a really isolating experience. Base fitness classes, MWR trips, and the Facebook groups can be great ways to find support systems. Please let me know if I can help in any way!

Hi! I was wondering if you know is it legal to dumpster dive or take someones trash/ recyclables in Japan. Love your videos, I'm a new subscriber. I hope you get more subscribers because your videos are inspiring and helpful. I'll be in Yokosuka in March 2023. What's your experience on available work for military spouses at Yokosuka base? I'm still researching. Thanks for sharing your videos on here.
@usedgucci9604
@usedgucci9604 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Thank you for the comment ☺️ First thing- you would be hard pressed to actually find a dumpster out in Japan. Trash here is very sorted and very serious. From what I can tell from the almighty internet police will prosecute you if you take a large item and Japan has a 99% conviction rate. I’d seriously recommend not dumpster diving out in town. On base is a different story. People are constantly leaving things up for grabs near the housing towers and dumpsters. And join the buy nothing groups on Facebook! People are always PCSing so there is a gold mine of free stuff you can get. And the thrift stores here are also fantastic. Work for military spouses in Japan- I was a spouse and I was able to find a great job suited to my skill set! If going through U.S.A.Jobs, make sure you take advantage of spousal preference. But, you can only use it once. So, if you use it to get hired at the first job that comes along, you won’t be able to use it again for a potentially better paying or generally better job. So choose wisely. And while you wait to get hired, there are many side jobs you can do! Check out my side jobs or Ikego video for some ideas. Yokosuka community is very supportive of small businesses. Hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any more questions I am happy to assist! And a preemptive welcome to Japan!

Kobe is an international city surrounded by mountains and the sea. Especially the areas on the hills are so chill and cozy and have an atmosphere like the Nunobiki herb garden. Surprisingly the areas are so large, leading to Osaka. We call them the Hanshinkan area. It has a unique architectural style and townscape fusion of Western and Japanese styles. A walk around the vast area of hills north of the Hankyu line is recommended. Hiking on Mt. Rokko is also recommended.
