how do you get rid of the streaks its leaving? I tried one of these but the streaks just wouldn't go away

The disk setup you see in this video is a stack of three 80 grit bristle disks- that’s pretty aggressive. Most of the time you can see I’m moving the disk at an angle to the rotation of the disks…except where I tip the disks up on the edge to clean up at a post base or flange. If you move the tool parallel to the spinning disks you’re more likely to make grooves that correspond with the disks in the stack. Since this is 80 grit, it’s just the first step in cleaning up and pre-conditioning the body for a patina…I’ll be working my way into gentler grits until it’s got the finish I’m looking for.

@@jeffreymassa gotcha! I’ve been trying to use the silicone polishing wheels you guys sell, but I’ve found they leave streaks as well, any suggestions for that? Thanks!

@@jacobgittelman1188 Similar technique with the silicone wheels- since these wheels have knife edge to start they can be very aggressive… which is great for getting into cracks and corners but dig in if not used with care. I try not to use the silicone wheels out on flatter surfaces but if I am I’ll tip the wheel at an angle to the work and push it along so that I’m using more of the side of the wheel. Very light pressure- the wheels only do work where they touch the material and pressing then down doesn’t increase the contact, it just increases the chances you’ll leave a groove. I mostly use the silicone wheels to contour edges and smooth joints, and use the bristle disks on larger surfaces. Just like any abrasive, you need to remove all of the scratches from the coarser grits as you move towards a finer finish (or you’re just polishing scratches) so it’s sometimes best to use less grit and more patience.

Could you also use Frixion markers or pens that go away when heat is applied or garment construction markers that go away if water is applied?🤔. Thank you for these demos. 🥺Nailpolish remover might help to remove permanent markings without damaging the metal, but I'm not sure. Anyway, 👍😎

Actually, once you commit to unsoldering why cut at all. If you unsolder the screw side, perhaps you will be able to get a better grip and save the screw. If you unsolder thread side, you may save the screw and avoid the alum bath.

I picked up and old C-Melody sax, just to restore it as I restore old stuff as a hobby. Sadly I have two screws with no head remaining. I wanted to find an easy-out, but I have yet to find one small enough.. Do you have a video to unsolder and resolder?

11:09 Why not desolder the threaded post, that way the key, hinge rod & post are off? Then you can slide key off and remove hinge rod from post then fabricate a new hinge rod or you might get lucky and be able to reuse old hinge rod. That way you avoid any cutting.

I have tried out these horns that had this kind of work- the horn is so out of tune and it sounds like a slide trombone as the notes are being played - the horn is basically ruined. That’s why I never buy old horns.- this is a really good example of some extremely bad workmanship

My tenor got wet when in my front closet because the apartment I lived in was leaking through the walls. Like, the water was rusty. I didn’t know this until I felt like playing. I opened it up, smelled mildew, then looked at my mouthpiece…. My god it was black because I left my reed on it from my last time playing 6 months prior. Instantly panicked and picked up my sax. *FOOF* I get dusted with spores. This will be fun. Sax has been moldy for 2 years now. I don’t know what to do with it besides clean it myself. I don’t want to do the professionals like that and my insurance company deemed my 11 year old sax a lost cause. I didn’t even get a payout, as it was the building owner’s fault (in my eyes).

I have two Martins Alto and Tenor, I'm in need of tech work on my tenor I dropped my neck and a new set of pads and a good going over would be a nice Birthday gift for my 75th next month. I lost my tech back in Covid and I haven't found anyone yet I have a 54 The Martin tenor I could use the Help.

Gorgeous.I'm convinced it is not only a looker but also a great player. Martins are massive, but quirky with intonation, IME, not for everyone. I'd love to play this horn next to my Music Man Model Committee tenor that is outfitted similarly with MusicMedic black Roos, MM metal domed resonators, but JL Smith Premium stainless springs which I stock in my shop. I dream of owning such a beauty-queen, but my playing abilities don't warrant it, even after 50+ years of being a sax-nerd. Instead, my Martin is sans lacquer and has several tone holes re-soldered, so it is no beauty queen but a supreme player.
