I think that's what the clients would charge as well. In the UK it is rare to have three phases in a domestic environment. The chargers are 7kw single phase.

Great video I enjoy watching you work your very methodical and thorough and do the job correctly and safely. Just wondering what was the fault, I could see that the line had snapped off in a different socket but what was the test you did in the socket that you were taking your feed for the outdoor socket? Im retraining at the minute hoping to become an electrician but ive still a long way to go. Just curious was it a radial or ring circuit and was it an continuity test you did which was too high which then flagged up that there was a fault somewhere. much appreciated keep the videos coming Nathan.

Hey thanks for the comment and apologies for taking so long to get back to you. When I first tested if the circuit was in fact a ring where I was adding to the circuit. I did the end to end test on continuity. This showed I think I very high or no reading between the two line conductors. To find the fault I split the ring in half and did a continuity test which got me within a few sockets of the fault. The line must have been poorly terminated originally and it had snapped in the socket. Thanks for the feedback any more questions Ill be happy to answer. Good luck in the retraining and thanks for the great feedback.

RCD are only required for additional protection from BS7671 17th edition amendment 3 onwards it doesn’t apply to earlier version of BS 7671 HSE note in BS7671 and the onsite guide Page 99 makes it clear. All your test results are within tolerance so you can sign it off as safe for continued service No RCD protection on installations designed to an earlier version of BS7671 ie before the 17th edition AM3 does not warrant a board change or upgrade. Unless there’s signs of overheating/burning exposed or access to live parts or damage to the board cover. But you I am glad to see you have done a proper thorough inspection and testing. Job well done 👍. But to be fair would I change that board probably, I think you have two choices change it as you can’t fit the fuse cover on or replace those Crap Plug in MCBs with new rewirble fuses witch are still compliant and can still be installed and fit the cover. In some circumstances changing the Board is probably the best option. It would depend on what appliances are in use and if any electrical equipment is being used outdoors. Just my personal opinion I have been a spark for thirty six years , and I’m not trying to tell you what to do or how to do your job. Just pointing out the facts. In regards to BS7671. No disrespect intended. Great video mate I look forward to seeing more from you.

Hi Sean, Thanks for the comment really appreciate the information and I completely agree with what you are saying. Looking back I wasnt very clear and having no RCDs on sockets is a very vague term. In my mind I meant for outdoor use but there you go! haha! A little background into the job, I carried out some work around 3 years ago and mentioned that replacing the fuseboard should be something they consider, and its been a back an forth since then. I think the fault on the light switch tipped them over the edge for an inspection and fuseboard replacement. It did want doing and I get it can be a costly job for a client so when I carry out these EICRs I do try to be as fair as possible, and like you say if there was no access to a garden then I would be thinking again about RCD protection and the code I would give. If all was satisfactory I would still be strongly recommending a board replacement. All you can do is give your professional opinion and try to explain the benefits of a new consumer unit. Most of time clients understand and listen. Again thanks for the comment really appreciate your feedback and I hope to be hearing from you again!

@@michaeltye8853 I agree, but to be honest rightly so. I don't think you would be doing your job if you didn't say to a client that you would recommend this old rewirable fuseboard be replaced. I thought there should be something like a minimum of 9-12 inches between gas and consumer unit. In fact I had someone contact me because the last electrician wouldn’t touch the job as the consumer unit was 2ft away from the gas meter but in the same cupboard . I asked a heating engineer for his opinion. He said it was only expectable if the cupboard was well vented . So the home owner fitted a large grill in the door. In my opinion if you had a gas leak and a mcb / rcd operated near by it could be fatal . minor gas leaks round meters do happen . I do know that even cupboards with just a gas meter have to be vented . And if it’s a outside meter box the pipe has to be well sealed to stop gas seeping into the cavity. Just my thoughts
@qualityelectrician

Hey Andy cheers for the comment, I believe it's 30mm for the gas pipes and 150mm for gas meter. Not a great spot is it.The only good thing about gas is it smells so at least you know if there is a leak I guess. You are right about the external meter box's and same with internal rooms should be well ventilated. I guess really it's down to the electrician carrying out the work. I wouldn't fail the installation for being too near the gas meter tbh. Appreciate you taking the time to comment. Thanks.

Just subscribed. I’m not a sparky but I have a question for you, if there’s no rcb on the supply wouldn’t the thing protecting the person cutting through the cable be the mcb at the house consumers unit? I think you said in another answer that you ran a 1.5 mm earth for the armour, so wouldn’t the perspective fault current be fairly low and that would have an impact on the trip time of the breaker and therefore give someone cutting the cable a heafty jolt? Wouldnt an rcbo be better at the cu? Or was that not possible with the board? Please don’t think I’m having a dig, it actually a genuine question to a genuine sparky from a diyer who doesn’t know and is interested.
@qualityelectrician
@qualityelectrician Жыл бұрын
Hi no problem all comments and questions welcome! Tha KS for the subscription. No RCD on the main supply, that's right the MCB will operate the circuit breaker. It's an armoured cable so it has a metal outer sheath. The cable is clipped direct so it doesn't require an RCD. Plus it has the added protection of the steel wire armour. The 1.5mm cable is suitable for the fault current of a 32a MCB, not only that it is bonded to the metal enclosure at the far end with the SWA gland. May it effect the fault current slightly but not enough to effect the tripping time of 0.4 seconds. The cable is also installed in a location that is unlikely to be damaged by anybody. Rcds are always best, and I could have easily installed one but for a consumer unit power supply it's bad practise and like I said if you have an issue with anything in the garage you loose the garage completely instead of just the affected circuit. I haven't taken offense and welcome any questions. I will say this though if you do this yourself you do need to ensure that your earth fault loop impedance is less that 80% of the maximum zs of the circuit breaker so a good test kit will be required to verify.

So do you think it was the gas that put their meter infront of the consumer unit or the sparky that put in behind the gas meter?
@qualityelectrician
@qualityelectrician Жыл бұрын
Is this like what came first the chicken on the egg type of question? 🫣 I'm fairly certain that the consumer unit was there first. Just because it was fairly neat in the board plus I couldn't get to the bus bar and main switch very well with a standard screwdriver to check tightness. I also would like to think that a sparky would try at the very least move it upwards away from the meter.

HI, thanks for the video - now subscribed - mines had subtitles, did you mean to have them? (I know how to turn subtitles off on KZbin videos) As an adult learner, I'm still a little confused about the earthing of SWA. You used a Wiska box - did you use a Piranha Earth Locking Nut then a lead from that (hence earthing the SWA) as well as the E from the 3-core - in other words - 2 E cables being fed thtough to the CU?
@qualityelectrician
@qualityelectrician Жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply reply. And thanks for subscribing! I build them in using the video software I use. I make it so you can download and turn on and off if possible but it didn't go well last time. Think it's better with subtitles TBF. For the wiska box you won't get a pirahana nut on there as it's already threaded. It's a special earth clamp you get(wiska EC308).and yes 2 earth's think I just used a bit of 1.5mm earth to bond the armourings as it's good enough to take the current. So 2 earth's back to the consumer unit. Exactly same as you would if you used a monocle(earth tag) when glanding a SWA into a consumer unit with a flying lead..same thing. Thanks for the comment!
