Very cool video! I wish i would have found this back when i was just starting to learn how to use the equipment. I bought the grinder & the seat machine & all the stones & dressers & misc stuff a shop had. A guy showed how to grind the valves. That part was easy. But i was on my own with the sests. I didnt have anybody that was willing to answere my questions or most didnt know themselves. But i figured it out. I had alot of questions that i just had to give my best guess of what i thought it should be like? I did ok. My first set of old 390 heads were good. I had one exhoust valve i must not have gotton it truly excentric? It always leaked abouf 50 percent from that cylinder. Never got worse. Couldnt tell running it. Thing had gobs of power. I did another set of heads & swapped them out & they were better. Still running today. Now ive dun sevral other sets of heads too. Ill say somtimes how i go at them is alil different than how you did it. If a seat is out a good bit, alot of times ill set a stone on it & ill just turn it by had with light pressure to see were the stone cleans up. Ill see alot with low spots. But ill go in & take material with my 60 & get it good & dug out all the way around. Ill kiss it with a 30 then but i dont want a deep 30 so just so it cleans it all the way around. That gives me a good visual of how the 45 looks. If the are out a bunch ill dig it out with my 60 till the 60 practicly meets the 30. Then ill go with the 45 so i can have a nice true 45 & it dont take much. Becouse the 45 is just a thin line all the way around were the 60 & 30 meet, so all u have to do is touch it to bring the width in of your 45. It leaves me with a thin 30 & a thin 45 & wide 60. Its worked well for me.

@@jesseduke694 I paint machinist dye on the seat after it's ground and then lightly tap the valve into the seat, it'll leave a line in the dye and you can make sure it's even all the way around. A 3 angle grind like that will help flow and make more power, just have to make sure you keep enough width on the cut that contacts the valve (usually the 45) so that it has a decent contact area with the seat. That contact area is what cools the head of the valve. The bigger the width on that cut, the more heat transfer from the valve to the cyl head. That's where the HP vs long term durability compromise comes in to play.

Super cool I had no idea the aluminum shroud was rare I was going to just part this engine out but I guess I’ll restore mine since it’s the aluminum one!
Just got a B&S on a lawnmower going. I put on new gasket and diaphragm but it was still running rough so I pulled the carb and tank off an engine that needs a new connecting rod. I drained the tank and cleaned the sump out and put it on the mower & it fired up.
@SuperKONR5 ай бұрын
@@mostlymoparih5682 Right on! Some of those diaphragm carbs are finicky. I had a 1980 b&s mower with one of the automatic choke carbs on it, that carb/tank got used on lots of other mowers since it was the only one that would work well.

When you go to pait it check out rapco paint they specialize in military paint they have all the colors and such you'll only need a quart for that and it will ship right to your house. I bought their tan paint for my m35a2c and loved the way it turned out same stuff the military uses. I've welded several air tanks never been scared of it if you can weld have at it I've built my own air tanks before 120psi isn't nothing too crazy. Especially that being just tubing that will be easy to fix up should almost weld a bung in the lowest portion to drain water out so it doesn't rust again. That tubing won't explode like a bumb if anything it will just split open and the air will rush out very likely won't even throw and shrapnel. That's a very cool piece definitely deserves a restoration! I'd love to see future progress on it

I'll check them out, thanks! I might weld it up myself and test it with the pressure washer. I've heard too many horror stories with big air tanks but I suppose tubing shouldn't be as big of a deal. There are water drains on both legs but it sat out in the dirt for who knows how many decades...

Once he sits down, the door shuts, gas pedal slams to the floor, and he is in for the ride of his life. .....Then he has to explain too the local enforcement why the car was going Mach 3 when it blew by their speed trap behind a billboard ! With the worn out small block in it I was getting about 15mpg running 2800 rpm. It could've gotten better but I hadn't dialed in the timing, and there's also the fact that the cylinders in that block were pitted and worn to hell so it didn't have very good compression. I have a 22 gallon tank in it out of a '70 model Mustang so I would run about 300 miles between fuel stops. I've driven it all over the western states and never had to worry about fuel. With a fresh engine I'm expecting 18-20mpg...

Gotta remember that these cars were everyone's drivers through worse driving conditions than we have now and they ran just fine. I've got a 1959 Mercury that has power windows, power door locks, power seat, all the modern creature comforts. A/C was even an option. When something breaks it's usually a cheap easy repair compared to a new car nowadays. If you have basic mechanical knowledge and can find a decent car to start with I'd recommend it over a new car.

260hp isn't crazy for a "6 cylinder" just for the shoddy cast log intake manifold for your Ford engine. Considering people are cranking out 2,000+ horsepower out of a Toyota 2JZGTE engine. 260 is peanuts but still far better than the 120 or so horsepower the 200 made from the factory.
