Does someone have a copy of the Dar Williams cover of this song? I like that song a lot but can't find it anywhere anymore :(

So sad that I'm thinking of this song today. So sad the news says we're providing mines for the Ukraine/Russian war. This song immediately came to mind. It eloquently tells what mines mean to people, not the machines of war.

Full circle. Back in the day I somehow ended up with a copy of Dirty Linen magazine (not a folkie at all) and in that was a sampler of music and Richard was in that. I dont remember the song, might have been this one, but I went out and bought his Shanachie disc and this song was on it, my gateway drug to a lifetime addiction to Shindell. Like any addict, non-addicts can look askance.... but I am happy under the overpass, passed by nuns and truckers, balloon men, orange canaries and sad-eyed mules, on and on they pass.

Talent off the charts... beautiful songwriting + virtuoso guitar playing + voice/singing that can't be topped. Gripping and beautiful at the same time.

I still don't know if "will" refers to her last will and testament, or just her intentions... Like so many RS songs, it keeps me poring over it long after the last note ends.

I don’t usually comment on KZbin videos, but I have to say that this is one of the most beautiful, but heart-wrenching songs I’ve ever heard. You have such talent Richard.

I first heard Richard on WFUV-FM from Fordham University in the Bronx, NY... I immediately ordered three of his cd's and went to see him in Huntington, on Long Island, NY... Love, Love, Love this man and his music... He brings such joy at a time when it could be the other way around. This is real, truly heartfelt music that touches my soul and captures my imagination... Thank you so very much. D

Years ago, when I first heard this, I thought Shindell missed an opportunity to make this song more than about politics, a song for basic humanity that included all of us so I had to smile at the way he corrected the lyric to include 'Democrats, Republicans, but mostly Republicans'. You made a great even better. But, really, I don't want to smile (knowingly) at the correction. A better correction would have been to pull ALL the political references out. No one should be excluded in this commentary. Bravo, regardless. A stunning piece. And, by the way, love live those nuns and, for the most part, to hell with the priests. That's my recollection of them during twelve years of catholic school on the south shore of Nassau County.

Hey Richard. I don’t know why the algorithm brought me back to this page 3 months later but today I learned that Frank Ford, age 79 the founder of the famous guitar store here in Palo Alto has died. It might be appropriate to bring you out here sometime to play and have part of the purpose to honor the store. His partner in business or crime his name, Richard johnston
