I thought hard about posting Sessions 28 and 29 together as one video, but I decided that the sense of confusion and frustration at the end of 28 was important to preserve as the experience it was. As a bonus, this session has a very different feel even though it's the same day for the characters, was recorded a week apart for the players, and waa actually recorded in March~

Talk about a sweet sour review. To think of it, I've been enjoying Wiggy's work from the Savage Worlds side for about 17 years. If this is his magnum opus, then his Hellfrost Atlas of the Frozen North must be a close second. Such a fantastic setting. Plus, he wrote probably the best Ubiquity RPG there is, the one with Frenchmen with swords. Mordavia seems right up my alley, I definitely need to get my hands on it. However, if you don’t use the pre-mades and rather make your own characters, the time lines don’t quite add up and your lords are different. I emailed David Larkins regarding this and he replied quickly with some great suggestions. It’s wrapping my head around the hierarchy between different houses/ factions that is the learning curve but I just need to jump in. It’s such a great alternative to 5e D&D. This seems like a very realistic way of developing the bonds and experiences that tie a party together. It reminds me a bit of systems like Traveller, where character creation involves years of in-game time of the character learning skills and building a network of contacts. But you're playing through those events, and therefore you and your players are creating those memories in a more meaningful way than if they were just written down in the 'Background' section of a character sheet. Thanks for posting this series!

APs are a challenge, for sure. As this series progresses, the annotations change to cover different topics, from system implementation in the early ones, to theory, to questions to viewers, to insight into decision-making and connections developing in play. The campaign has 4 independent branches, each with their own playlist. The main campaign playlist has everything in order of release. Each separate branch approaches play a little differently so across a few sessions the different techniques and attitudes about and toward play become apparent. Good luck! I hope you find something worth your time~

Over a decade later; Here is an AI powered summary of this wonderful thread of comments. PROS - For Using Narrative Structures: Enhanced Storytelling and Player Engagement: Some players and GMs find that structuring gameplay like a novel or TV series helps in creating a more engaging narrative. It provides a framework that players familiar with such formats can easily relate to, enhancing their enjoyment through character development and plot progression. Player Investment and Character Growth: Narrative structures can give players downtime or intervals between major events, allowing them to reflect on their character's growth, engage in side activities, or develop their character's backstory, which can lead to deeper player investment. Clarity and Pace Control: Using acts or chapters can help manage the pace of the game, ensuring there are natural breaks where players can process information or where dramatic tension can be heightened with cliffhangers. Accessibility: For new players or those who enjoy structured storytelling from other media, these formats can make RPGs more accessible and appealing, potentially broadening the hobby's audience. World Building and Setting: Adopting a narrative structure can help in creating a detailed, immersive world where events feel interconnected and purposeful, which might not be as easily achieved in a completely sandbox environment. CONS - Against Using Narrative Structures: Limitation of Freedom: Critics argue that strict narrative structures can feel like railroading, limiting player agency and the organic development of the story. This can make the game feel less like an interactive experience and more like a scripted play. Loss of Spontaneity: There's a concern that pre-planned structures might stifle the unexpected twists and turns that emerge from player decisions, which are often the most memorable parts of RPGs. Overcomplication: Some feel that imposing a narrative structure like chapters or acts might overcomplicate the game, turning it into a mechanical exercise rather than a fluid, dynamic storytelling experience. Not All Players Enjoy This Format: Not every player enjoys or benefits from a structured narrative approach. For some, the appeal of RPGs lies in the freedom to explore without predefined plot points, focusing more on character interactions and world exploration rather than a linear story. Potential for Disconnect: If not handled well, narrative structures might lead to a disconnect between the player's actions and the story's progression, where players feel they are merely following a script rather than influencing the world. General Observations: Flexibility is Key: Many comments suggest that while narrative structures can be beneficial, they should be flexible enough to accommodate player choices and unexpected developments. Player and GM Preference: The effectiveness of using narrative structures largely depends on the preferences of the group. Some thrive on structure, while others prefer a more open, sandbox approach. Balancing Act: There seems to be a consensus that the best approach might be a balance, where narrative structures provide a backbone but allow for deviations and player-driven stories.

I will never forget the time I was playing Merc (80's paramilitary rpg) with my brother who was a wartime veteran and had been in combat. Our other brother was running the adventure which had us talking to a warlord who was giving us a hard time. My veteran brother and my characters were surrounded by the warlords men, but my vet brother didn't blink when things were looking unfavorable, he just starts shooting! I'm new to RPGs at the time and was like "what are you doing?!? We're gonna get killed!" But we proceeded to shoot and toss grenades in every direction, a few of our NPC companions died but we some how made it out. I was young and new to gaming and didn't want to see my character die. Meanwhile my vet brother saw it as a game and regardless of what happened felt untouchable. I will never forget that moment in my gaming experiences.
