Man, it sucks that those corners got smushed. And unfortunate that it may have hit the floor of your home (assuming that it got damaged there) with the least protected part of the box! The bottom of the inner packaging had a substantial amount of cardboard away from the edge of the book, but not the top. They should really put some spacers at both top and bottom (or sides, I guess, depending on how you look at it) to guarantee a safe arrival. The Starter Set looks pretty darn awesome. A bit of, let's say, questionable art (IMHO), but definitely a very good looking product. The "NPCs" I assume are pre-gens? The actual core rulebook.. I kind of want it. But again, the art... That comic book art style is not what I would want to see in a Pendragon book. Smylie is a very competent artist, but it's really ... ehh, I wanted something different. More like the painted classics of ye olden times (Wyeth, Pyle, Frank Godwin, Angus McBride... But could be a bit more modern like Donato Giancola or Gary Gianni). I'd have to be Chaosium's art director to have a book looking exactly the way I wanted, though. Hey, gorgeous end papers! Wait, I may have gotten ahead of myself. The interior seems to look a lot like the Starter Set, which is pretty good! I thought we would have plenty more illos like the cover. Dangit, I may need to get a copy for myself now.

It does suck that it got safely to my front gate and then literally crashed to a stop. I do think padding on the bottom would have helped. As for the book, it does sell itself well in the hand. It comes at readers from a number of angles asking them to give it a try. The Starter Set has 7 characters that are good for use in its adventures and can continue on into the Grey Knight campaign (if they survive), but as I don't run published adventures, they are NPCs to me~

I have to mention one of my favorite French tv show called Kaamelott (a word play on Camelot and a word meaning cheaply made thing, lol). A classic French short form comedy, a series centered around depressive Arthur Pendragon, the only smart man in a world filled with idiots. A comedy at first but that slowly evolve into a drama with comedic moments. So many timeless quotes from this show, that can hardly be translated. I could not see myself run Pendragon without having a little (or a lot) of Kaamelott in it. I guess it is ruined for me. 🤣

"It's only a model..." "On second thought, let's not go there. It's such a silly place." Sounds interesting! It is in good company with Python, Excalibur, and Camelot for adding challenges for a Pendragon GM~

Excellent unboxing. Given your thesis at the beginning, I’d love to see your series have direct comparisons to Pendragon 5 (or 5.1 or 5.2, both of which I own), just to see how your original hypothesis holds up. Does an aging gamer like myself really need another edition of a game I’ve bought twice already? 😁

@@Runeslinger I’m going to take my players through the Sword Campaign in the starter set then continue with the Grey Knight. However, if you don’t use the pre-mades and rather make your own characters, the time lines don’t quite add up and your lords are different. I emailed David Larkins regarding this and he replied quickly with some great suggestions. It’s wrapping my head around the hierarchy between different houses/ factions that is the learning curve but I just need to jump in. It’s such a great alternative to 5e D&D. Low magic, only humans players and everyone is a knight. Feasts are major events where a lot can take place. Very different game play.

I'm disappointed at how many things that were in the 5th edition core are not in this - it really should have kept the "player's handbook" title. But I'm still looking forward to running this for the next one-shot night at my rpg club.

@@Runeslinger at minimum: sample NPCs, a bestiary, and GM advice. Unless you have experience with Pendragon or buy either the Starter Set or the Grey Knight, you can't run a campaign out of the Core Rulebook. For me, that's the gold standard for whether something is really a "Core Rulebook"

Seeing the unboxing of this and Gaia is giving me an itch to restart some roleplaying (I have had an interest in Pendragon for a while, but waited for this new edition before diving in), despite if current real life circumstances allows for it. Consider me interested to discuss for a possible game with someone on a friendlier time zone, if all other preferences have been exhausted.

I have the pdf of the Starter Set. I so wanted to like it. But…I struggled with the way many of the pregens were female and stronger and tougher than their male counterparts. It just didn’t set the tone to make me feel like it was based on the legends of King Arthur. Growing up with films like Excalibur it felt jarring to see this. I understand that I am walking a fine line into possible sexism and I don’t want to be that guy…however there it is, that’s how I felt. I have no issue with fantasy worlds where women are knights but this game is meant to be about Arthurian legend and sells itself as a mythic, pseudo-historic representation of ancient Britain etc.
@Runeslinger
@Runeslinger 3 ай бұрын
@@dungeondumbo I will certainly be looking at character creation, as it is nice for me to see the return of a random option. I will also be looking at the role of expectation for and appreciation of fiction and game elements may apply differently at our tables and for the writers in terms of capturing a sense of Arthur for modern gamers without sacrificing the heart.
@jona826

Chaosium is now very "Woke" and I too find it extremely jarring. The character sheets for their Regency Period Cthulhu book put me off as soon as I saw that they had pronouns. Maybe I'm just too old and set in my ways.
@Runeslinger
@Runeslinger Ай бұрын
I think it is important to recognize our reactions and talk about them. I can't speak for Chaosium's motives, but for me - I think leaving room for people who hurt differently or are questioning their lives differently than I do is not too much to ask. Where I have to draw the line is being told my generation uniformly did and believed things that we did not. Acceptance and understanding has to go both ways.
@dungeondumbo
@dungeondumbo 29 күн бұрын
@@jona826 hi, yes I looked at Regency and wished I hadn't. The black vicar in Regency period heartland England just wouldn't have happened. It's the way they take established lore and change it to project 'the message' that I find irritating. It would flip the other way and be just as jarring if Chaosium created a campaign setting based off Africa and made all the locals Chinese. It's stupid.
@Runeslinger
@Runeslinger 29 күн бұрын
@dungeondumbo I get the sense of disconnection between history and varied takes on a historical setting. However, as we are dealing with a lot of other fictional elements in that setting, I think you might find that that logic doesn't hold under examination unless a group plays with the strict intention to adhere to their understanding of established historical information. If, for example, a group wishes to explore the limitations of technology and social structure of that period, and nothing else, they may be engaged in play in a fictional setting, they might be academically lazy, they might have a message, or some combination of these - or others. How do you feel about transforming 7 Samurai into The Magnificent 7?
