Jake ,you will do well in life. Though it is a strange comparison, I lost loved ones this year and I feel miserable. The point is, by you coming out, you freed yourself out of that unhappiness . I have to free myself of pain like you did. You are an inspiration for people who don't feel free to express themselves. Keep up your helping others out and be the guiding light for the world. More than anything else, look in the mirror, and be very proud of yourself. Take care and have a wonderful Christmas and a healthy, prosperous 2025.

So are you going to commute to Jersey? My husband and I moved from Brooklyn (Park Slope) to Bloomfield NJ - only because we knew we were moving to Europe 8 months later. The commute was horrible.

You didn't throw away 19 years - everything you went through helped to make the man you are today. I also came out at 19, but that was 51 years ago. I wasn't a football player, but Division I track and field. I never knew an openly gay person until I came out and threw myself into the small uni gay community that existed in the mid-seventies. I met my husband when I was 23 and he was 18 - I was in grad school and he was a freshman (he took a course I taught). You are very bright and very brave. Hang in there, it only gets better.

Colitis is brutal. Even though you don't have this ongoing stress, are you following a diet plan? Know that one positive from having this sort of thing happen early in life is that you'll know forever after what the cost can be of beating yourself up mentally can be. This is especially true w colitis--you truly have to be gentle with yourself. I had some fainting episodes in college when I was going through similar stuff & ended up in the hospital & once there I was like, whoa, maybe I don't want to off myself so soon.

I met my life partner when I was 21. We were happily together for 37 years years until God called him home. (BTW, that is something I do not think I'll ever get over by the time I die.) Hang in there! You don't mention your faith, but find it if you do not have any. My church has been a blessing for me.

This is a smart decision for you at this point, because if you’re not sure WHY you’re in college then there’s no point wasting time and money. You can always go back at a different time to study what you want.

Are you transferring to a school in the city? Going back and forth is going to get exhausting. Also make sure you have 6+ month security saving in case something happens, cause once you sign, you’re in it for a while. I live in the west village, and you can find something in your budget here. Highly highly recommend avoiding Fidi for your first apartment

This video inspired me to do some computation and research. To wit: 12 months’ rent for a studio apartment at the midpoint of Jake’s budget = $43,800 (unrealistically assuming brokerage and transaction costs at zero)\ One year’s out-of-state tuition at Rutgers: $36,000 100 round trips per year WTC-New Brunswick via NJ Transit: $1120 That’s $82,920 per year, with no allowance for food or clothing, much less skin-care supplies. By comparison, the average salary in New York City - for those who work full-time - is about $74,000. An interesting contrast!
