You should read Joan Didion’s essay Goodbye to All That about being young and moving to NYC and how magical it is, until it’s not. It’s from the 1960s, but holds true to this day. Best quote: “…quite simply, I was in love with New York. I do not mean “love” in any colloquial way, I mean that I was in love with the city, the way you love the first person who ever touches you and you never love anyone quite that way again.”

@ You can usually find a copy online, despite not really being in public domain. It’s powerful, and along with Edie Sedgwick & Andy Warhol were my siren songs to come to NYC. You’ll enjoy it, she has a complete nervous breakdown in her empty apartment with garden furniture and a giant piece of silk cloth as a curtain that is never tamed.
