Stan's story of trying to get Jack an art director staff job is a bone of contention. According to Mark Evanier, who was an assistant to Kirby, the main driving force in Kirby leaving was the security of his family. His daughter suffered from asthma and doctors recommended a dryer climate and Jack moved the family to California. he sought health insurance to care for his family and Goodman denied it and treated Kirby like crap. Jack then approached DC and publisher carmine Infantino was more than glad to steal Marvel's top creative talent and did so (and also Ditko, by way of Charlton Comics and Dick Giordano). DC's promises to Kirby were not upheld, but his contract to produce a certain number of pages per month was. Kirby's books sold better than other DC books that were not cancelled, when the Fourth World was, but he cost them more than those other creators. Plus, there was a long seated jealousy of Kirby at DC, that went back to the 40s, when Simon & Kirby came in on a lucrative deal, with total control of their work, as well as a piece of the profits. When Kirby returned there, in the 50s, doing Green Lantern, after closing his own company, he was treated like less than s@#$. Jack was exploited by a lot of people, because he was more concerned about earning a living to support his family than standing up for his talent. he was a product of the slums and the depression, supporting his parents at a young age, through his art.

6:02 Clearly Stan Lee knows what he is doing here, if he would have actually just rewritten the same letter and rephrased that one sentence Steve Ditko could have gotten the credit he deserves but instead he chose to just pretend that Steve Ditko is a pedantic lunatic who he feigns sympathy for once again throwing him under the bus. I hope Hell burns for your Stan Lee.

I know right. Autonomy is a very rare trait nowadays. People hardly read past headlines. Everyone bases their entire personality and philosophy on some Disney or Hollywood Movie.

From what I vaguelyremember from reading Mark Evanier's comments about this specific issue was the job Stan offered would require Jack to live in New York but Jack was planning to, or already had moved, to California, due to his wife, Roz' health! The job eventually went to John Romita.

Stan Lee was playing with words on purpose. There's a big difference in saying "I consider him to be the co-creator..." and "He is the co-creator...". He would never say the latter, even though he's the only one who could, because it would mean legal trouble for everyone.
