Advantages of supporting your local team Strong connection: supporting your local team can provide sense of community and belonging as it allows you to connect with fans who shares their interest in their local sports team. Accessibility: supporting your local team can be easy to travel to the football game compared to travelling long distance which makes it straightforward to engage with fans and get more opportunities. Economic support: supporting your local team can contribute to the local economy by generating revenue for the team, local businesses around the stadium. Connection to players: supporting your local team can means closer connection to staff and players. This can lead to strong emotional ties and a deeper understanding of the team dynamics. Disadvantages of supporting your local team Limited success: supporting your local team may not always be exciting as your team will not perform well compared to other teams, making it feel sad and disappointed or even jealous and furious. Limited resources: local teams may have limited resources and funding compared to larger teams, which can impact the quality of players, facilities and overall performance. Limited fan base: compared to larger teams with global fan base, local teams may have a smaller support base making it challenging to have a direct impact on the players. It can also result in less diversity among fans and fewer opportunities for networking and community building. Limited exposure: local teams may receive less media coverage and exposure compared to larger teams. This makes it challenging for supporters to stay informed about team news and developments. This lack of exposure can also limit your exposure to different playing style, players, teams potentially hindering their overall knowledge and enjoyment of the sport. Advantages of supporting an outside team Deep understanding and enjoyable experience: supporting an outside team can make you enjoy your journey by travelling far distance making it have a very nice experience and it is memorable. It can also make you visit new place and understand their culture, tradition and fan dynamics. Access to top talent: supporting an outside team can be exciting, fun and enjoyable as it makes you see the players playing attractively. This means that fans can enjoy watching high-quality performances. Connection with a global community: many outside team can have a large and diverse fan base spread across the country. Supporting outside team can make you connect with the fans from different backgrounds and culture. Media exposure: outside team receives more media coverage and exposure compared to local teams. This makes it straightforward for fans to access to news, updates and analysis about their favourite team and players. Supporting an outside team can also exposure you to different playing style, teams and players that can broaden your understanding and appreciation of the game. Disadvantages of supporting an outside team Limited local connection: supporting outside team may result to a weaker sense of community as the team is not based in your area. This makes it challenging to connect with fans and fewer opportunities to community engagement. Limited access to the match: supporting an outside team can be more difficult to attend the match that is far from your location especially due to distance, cost, delays, traffic and cancellation making it very challenging to engage with fans regularly and actively support a team in person. Time zone difference: if the outside team is located in the area with a different time zone, it can sometimes be challenging to follow the football club and know the exact time. This may require adjusting your schedule which can be inconvenient. Limited local impact: supporting an outside team may not contribute to directly to the local community or economy in the same way that supporting a local team does. This can result in disconnection with local sports scene and fewer opportunities for engagement.

I support Rangers but live in Dundee. I hate my hometown and don't feel much of a connection to either of the clubs here. Grew up with Rangers and generations of my family have supported them. Makes sense to me. Either support local or your family club.

What about me? My local team is Sheffield United, born and raised 2 miles from Bramall Lane, so they are literally my local team. Went to a fair few matches with my uncle when I was little and one in the last couple of years but my family is from Nottingham and are all Forest supporters. My first ever game was at the city ground when I was 5 which is the only match I’ve seen in Nottingham. I don’t know whether to support Sheffield United or Forest. I know it ain’t that deep 😂

I was born in England and moved to Australia when I was 3 and I grew up there and my family Friend and my friends brother both went for Chelsea. I also got given a Chelsea shirt from one of them. That’s why I support them. I have 2 brothers and one goes for United and one goes for Arsenal. My dad goes for Ipswich and Chelsea is the only one feels like home. I was born in Salford so I should support them a bit as-well. It’s very tough because I live in Australia though.

Mine's a bit different. I started watching Man Utd games when I was like 6 yrs old and then started supporting them. I didn't had a local team back then. My local team (NEUFC) was founded in 2014 and then I started supporting them as well. The local league happens for like 3-4 months, so I go to their games as much as I can and also watch Utd games.

This is true only for countries that have a decent football pyramid and they care about development of their teams and their national team. Some countries don't care and don't invest money into football even if fans make an effort to watch their games. Those people deserve some quality football too.

Im a huge Manchester United fan from Dublin and supported United since I was six. I also support my local club bohemians that is shown there in the video and go week in week out because its hard to afford going to see my beloved Manchester United only go once a year twice if I'm lucky. One thing I learned was you have to experience live football regularly and everyone seems to know each other at local football and it is a community. You learn a lot more as a football fan the older you get and understand what it is really about and supporting your local team week in week out is definitely the way.
