I always wondered what shaytans motive was! Insecurity led to arrogance and then led to bringing everyone else down with him.

رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ Rabbanaa zhalamnaaa anfusanaa wa inllam taghfir lanaa wa tarhamnaa lanakoonanna minal khaasireen. Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will certainly be among the losers.
