LOL James California @jamescalifornia2964 Thank you so much for the belly laugh - I needed that as I am about to take a break before continuing to reply to comments but just saw yours so I had to reply and thank you! Ah, it might be the classic case of "money talks, but sometimes it stutters!" Let's hope James Edwards finds his financial fluency soon! Have a great Sunday in Sunny California. Just about to take the puppy for a walk before dinner in dark Sunday evening in Negros Oriental (gets dark early here all year round). Take care, Greg

Honestly, your mileage always will vary. Especially depending on where and how you live. Electricity and housing is at par if not more expensive then in many western countries, especially electricity, check the rate per kwh. Also the most expensive cell phone plan from both Globe (Platinum 5000) and Smart ( Infinity) are areound 5k PHP, not 17 USD :) Just saying. I have lived in Metro Manila since 2010, I have started as an employee of a multi national, and made my path up and down, to now running my own Cybersecurity Business. I made as little as 60k a month in 2010. Your numbers though also do not necessarily reflect reality entirely. E.g. almost all of my constulting staff now gets paid above 200k (those are Filipino employees) and certainly i know doctors and lawyers who makee beyond a million a month. Again, your milegage may vary but certainly the statement that somebody earining 4k USD a month is living in povetry is total nonsense.

I wonder if this guy is just trying to brag about how rich he is. In the US, $7000 is above average but not incredible. Before I retired I was making $11,000 / month. I didn't go around saying that anyone making less than that was a squatter and living in poverty.

The question "how much does it cost to live in the Philippines" is impossible to answer without knowing the expected lifestyle. Do you think you're living high if you get to eat almost every day? Or do you whine about how poor you are of you can only afford ONE private jey? (Like, what sm.i supposed to do? Use the same plane for every trip?) That said, I think I'd do ok on $2500. Much less than that id consider a struggle. But I've heard plenty of people day they live nicely on $1000. I wouldn't want to live on that, but if you're happy with it, that's all that matters.

Our basic bills for a family of 3 in a 3bdrm 2 bath townhouse is under $1100/month. We manage to eat VERY healthy at home, and provide for most extras, including AC. The point is leave something to put into savings.

Hi Dwight @dwight6673 My first time living in Dumaguete was 2019 and back in Negros again in 2021 and stayed since then. Prices have changed since then but it’s all relative as everywhere has gone up since 2019 and living in the Province, Negros Oriental, is my retirement choice over where I used to live (Ayala Alabang Metro Manila, Carmona Cavite and BGC Metro Manila) Excellent for you Cdn$1,500 (P62,500 or US$1,104) to Cdn$2,000 (P83,411 or US$1,472) is enough in the Provinces- not sure about your 5 to 10 year estimate - all depends on so many factors beyond all our control. But everyone has the power to adjust spending based on lifestyle choices if you have a fixed budget - definitely can make it work on your estimates. Glad you can do it. As far as your though there are too many KZbinrs in Dumaguete - I guess you don’t see differences. As far as my viewers they are from all over the world - KZbin spits out all kinds of data. For us they show recent viewers from countries such as the Philippines, Canada, USA, Dubai, Hong Kong, UK, Saudia Arabia, Qatar, Singapore, Australia, ... - no idea what other channels you are thinking about or where their audience is from - I am happy with our small channel results - obviously we hope to do better but I won’t resort to things some channels do - I try to give an honest view of our life here so that others can learn before they make the leap. But as I always tell people DON'T just move here come on a holiday and tour the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, even other places that interest you Panama, Costa Rica, Spain, etc! Find the best place that suits you - we are all different and have different budgets. I mentioned in the video I have an upcoming Medical costs video I have been working on, what I didn’t say when I published this video you commented on I was home from a break at the hospital as my wife was in with Dengue Fever - those kind of unexpected bills put a dent in your monthly budget estimates - I will add this experience to my upcoming video. The Bill was P36k, PhilHealth covered P13k so my share was P26k - that is our first medical bill of 2024 so we have been lucky. Amping Greg

Hey NineSeven 420 Empire @nineseven420empire3 It's great to hear about your experience living on a budget! It just goes to show that with the right planning, you can make it work in different places. You live in a beautiful part of the world. We did a 4-week Western Canada driving tour in Sept 2023 and then worked our way down from Vancouver to LA before jumping to NYC. We took the train down to Eugene, stayed there then rented a car the next day. Before going over to Bend to stay with family we went over to your coastline and stayed in a nice ocean front hotel, Driftwood Shores Resort near Florence - it was so nice. Lindie my wife came in just as I was replying to her and I mentioned you were from Oregon and reminded her of our Florence stay - she reminded me we have some great content from there WHICH I HAVE FAILED TO EDIT!! I am so slow!! We loved that area and then drove to Bend and stayed longer before heading South. Was such a great part of the country to explore. I agree with your comment own house (living space) and vehicle and life is cheap - I just mentioned that to someone else - our house and vehicles are paid for so our monthly life is low cost here even though we live a very good life. Just need to have some backup for unexpected costs that come out so you don’t have to stress - we had one last week when my wife was admitted to hospital with Dengue Fever - anyone living on a maxed-out budget would be stressed with us. Luckily for us we were very grateful for the amazing health care she received at Negros Oriental Polymedic Hospital. She was released today, Sunday Oct 6 - when I went down to pay there was another ex-pat on the phone having a heated conversation about his bill - he was negotiating getting money from someone to pay his bill before they would release him. Not sure how that even happens - it is a modern hospital that takes credit cards, debit cards, bank transfer and cash. When we arrived (our 4th time being admitted there in the last 3 years (2 for her and 2 for me) they always ask for a deposit. For Dengue it was P10,000, when my appendix burst it was P20,000, for both of those PhilHealth covered part of the cost and I paid the balance on my credit card. I couldn’t imagine living in another country and not having access to a bank account to transfer from or a credit card - but some like to live more dangerously than my risk averse approach. No idea how that guy made out but hope he figured it out. I am almost done a video on health care costs here and will add in our last 5 days experience - so many expats trash the system here - but my experience has been great. Maybe like you say, having car/house paid for - helps the living situation. Amping take care, Greg

Wow maraming salamat (thank you so much) Smackedown @Johnnymac66 Thank you so much for subscribing! I appreciate your support and I'm excited for you to discover all the amazing Filipino breakfast dishes. Your retirement journey is going to be delicious! I am the same as you I love sauces - for me my favorite from the start was Pork Tocino, now I like Beef Tapas - in fact I ordered Beef Tapa Saturday for breakfast. Many Filipino breakfasts come with a choice of Pork Tocino (sweet flavor), Beef Tapa (marinated beef), Chorizzo, Longganisa (sausage and can be made of different things - chicken or pork), or a fish - then either garlic or plain rice and an egg. If you like spicy you can also add some dipping sauce which I now love, a spicy vinegar sauce like Suka Pinakurat or a green papaya vinegar salad. Lots to discover and I am certain you will find a few that you like best. I bought some imported steak and really should make a homemade batch of Beef Tapa. I have mentioned a website I started to use before I retired, if you like to cook or have someone who does try it out - every Filipino dish you can think of in all categories is on there. I don’t know this lady but she has a great website www.kawalingpinoy.com/ I just looked it up again and she has categories you can click on - I clicked on Breakfasts and it made me hungry again! Her first one is Beef Tapa (the big pieces in the photo are definitely NOT what you get here when you order - maybe one or two of those pieces cut up into tiny pieces), then she has Longganisa and the next two are Chicken Tocino and Pork Tocino - check it out when you have time. Also Canadian living in the Philippines. Many think that living in the Philippines is cheap and depending on the lifestyle it can be but not if you enjoy the perks of living well. Western food imported here, household staff, imported goods, appliances and other quality goods can all be obtained for a price. Mercedes even comes to our island twice a year for services. Chartered flights, electric garage 0:15 doors, dishwashers, grand piano, and much more are all obtainable at a price. I especially like Canadian steaks and roasts, Nanimo bars, back bacon, and foods from my home land are all shipped here for a price. Ping golf clubs and much more. But I especially like using the Philippines as a home base for outside country travel. It just all depends on wants and desires without budgets. Lastly simple things here in the Philippines are so great. People are the best, weather is unreal great compared freezing Edmonton and winters in Arizona with the heat and even the joy of growing our first banana tree. Lifestyle.

Hi Fellow Canuck Kinsal @bazoincas12 Sounds like you’re living the dream! Who doesn’t want to chill with a grand piano and some delicious Canadian food while the bananas are growing in paradise? We grew pineapples here and maybe I am biased but picking them when perfect and then cutting them and eating them was so great and some of the best pineapple I have tasted. I agree with your points and shudder at the thought of some coming here never having travelled before but selling off everything and coming here with false expectations - that was my original thought of doing my first Budget Video (with low high budgets) then modifying that in the second video to do 4 different sample budgets. I was tired of seeing some giving false info about how cheap it was here - one was saying how he lived for $500 in the province all in and the other said with him, wife and baby in Manila condo lifestyle for $1,000 - from my experience both would not have a happy life, particularly the wife/baby scenario with the associated additional expenses. A guy living like a hermit could pull off the $500 but as my dad said when I showed him my beach front rustic cottage in 2019 nice BUT WHY not enjoy your retirement more - you earned it. His words made an impact on me but I still hope to get back to a beach property with just something more comfortable similar to the house we bought in 2021. I have said a similar thing in some of my videos about using the Philippines as a base of travel - also for us life is low cost here since our vehicles and house are paid for so we are looking at exploring more, around and outside the Philippines. The guys who come here on low budgets and that is their entire income then end up in difficulty end up bashing the Philippines - my advice to the low budget ones, as also suggested by another viewer - their low living budget should not be their entire income - they should be saving for unexpected costs, medical, and even travel home if it is not - but many won’t listen. Congrats to you and your lifestyle. Keep enjoying life over here! Amping take care, Greg

It can be done fairly easily, if you manage well, and your partner is good at finding the best prices, say on food. However, if you're paying a premium for kitty or supporting a lot of others, even $3k isn't enough. I don't mind if it discourages more foreigners from coming here, which will raise the prices. 🙂

Hi Sentinel 1 @sentinel80 I appreciate your comment! It’s great to have viewers like you who bring valuable information to the discussion. The chart I used is from the Philippines Statistical Authority, I saw the one you refer to it is from The Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) by Dr. Jose Ramon G. Albert, Senior Research Fellow. I like Dr Albert’s numbers betters and will use that chart from now on - thank you for pointing it out. I note that as the guy who commented on my video said he fits in the Lower Middle Income class with his US$7,000 budget - even with the revised #s he still JUST A BIT OUTSIDE (as Bob Uecker used to say) that category - Dr. Albert’s numbers are P24,060 (not P19,928.94) to P48,120 (not P38,597.88) - STILL below his minimum P400,000 monthly budget! My only comment is you note you would “just qualify if you lived there again” - up to you but as you know you don’t need to live in the RICH category to have a nice life here - most certainly don’t fit in that level. Hi Steven Ferguson @STEVENSCOTTFERGUSON Thank you for sharing your experience! It's always enlightening to hear how different living situations can affect our perception of financial stability. I just looked up this cost of living comparison between the USA and the Philippines by Nubeo.com They say: Cost of Living in United States is 120.0% higher than in Philippines (without rent) (so your half estimate is bang on!!) Cost of Living Including Rent in United States is 178.0% higher than in Philippines Rent Prices in United States are 487.5% higher than in Philippines Restaurant Prices in United States are 259.0% higher than in Philippines Groceries Prices in United States are 105.0% higher than in Philippines This last one is interesting: Local Purchasing Power in United States is 319.0% higher than in Philippines - that is because overall the income levels are so low in the Philippines. One person commented he knows Filipinos making 200k per month and doctors making 1mil per month - that is a tiny tiny fraction of the 115million population and definitely NOT happening in the Provinces. Based on the fool quote count, your buddy James is likely flying high on something. In which case, it should be no big surprise that he believes that he needs 7,000 USD/mo to live a lower-middle-class life in the Philippines. He probably does. Hi Michael Takayama @michaeltakayama8415 Thank you for your insightful comment! It’s true that factors like lifestyle and personal choices play a huge role in budgeting. I appreciate your support and I’m excited to share the healthcare vlog with you! I should have taken more time to explain how his MINIMUM US$7,000 (about P400,000) per month budget COULD put him in Lower Middle Class budget range (P19,928 to P38,598) if he spent 360,000 to 380,000 on booze and girls! His banner page photo CASH FAN - was a good start to that - no judgement here, but not the norm OR needed to have a nice retirement budget here. One thing I didn’t mention was as I was wrapping up that video we were in the middle of another Philippines Healthcare experience - my wife was just released today (Sunday Oct 6) after being in the hospital with Dengue Fever. Very interesting video 🤔 I have been living in Cebu City, For the past six months, right next to Ayala mall, in a very nice 1 bedroom condo in Solinea tower 3, in Cebu Business park, it’s one of the nicer areas in Cebu city and I live in western lifestyle and Eat at Western restaurants 3 to 4 Nights a week for less than $2500 USD A month, which is roughly 140,000 pesos a month, I can definitely live cheaper if I move, which I am looking to do at the beginning of next year, Anyways, the bottom line is everyone is different, Budget Videos are all relative to your income and lifestyle? But you did not need $7000 USD a month To live in the Philippines, in my humble opinion, this is an absurd amount of money, When I met my Philippine girlfriend, she was working six days a week making roughly US $300 a month and supporting five people including her mother, son and niece and nephew.

I have stayed at Quest Hotel and Conference Center since my first visit to Cebu in 2018, just a few minutes away from your place. You have a nice solid realistic budget which gives you a great lifestyle - well done. When I was leaving Ayala Alabang Metro Manila in 2019 it was recommended, I try Cebu City, for me it was a mini-version of where I had lived and I was looking for more of a change so I ended up in Dumaguete. One funny story a friend recommended I buy a condo near SM Seaside - they had such big plans but I thought the quality of the building was not great AND I banged my head in the hallway as I was doing the tour. Every time I drive by there the last 3 years, even in 2024, I see they are still at their 2019 four buildings and all their stated growth never developed - I like your area of the city much better. I totally get what you’re saying; everyone’s got their own way of doing things and its all about income and lifestyle. Good luck with your move next year! Amping take care, Greg

He is full of it. Anyone who thinks $4000 per month is poverty in the Philippines is extremely insensitive to the people and the culture of the Philippines. Most filipinos make around $200-$1000 per month. You can spend as much as you want regardless of where you live, but the Philippines is extremely affordable to live comfortably. I would say if you have a couple thousand US a month you can live fairly comfortably even in the city. Our house is in Bohol which is a tourist destination and our money still goes incredibly far there.

Your bar hopping warning is so true - I knew a guy in Manila who spent P200,000 on rent, had a driver, a cook and a maid (P15,000 each), his electric bill was P80,000 per month because ran the AC at 16 in a two-story house - often with the doors open to the pool (pools are nice here but expensive to run), played the expensive golf courses, led an interesting party life and could easily spend P100,000 in one night (not every night but regularly enough) at the BARS. He would drink more in one 24-hour period than I would drink in a month - but he was a grown up who had the budget and enjoyed that life - not my idea of a relaxing retirement. Amping Greg

Hi Harri Vennola @harrivennola8687 That one is in our subdivision - the nice thing about that one is there is no house beside. It is small though and seems to be attached with a common wall on the other side - which could be noisy. I texted the owner and said I was doing a video and asked the price - she said to have the people contact her # . OK at least I tried! No idea what the cost is except based on the size and others here it could be P10,000 - P15,000 per month. The house beside us was for rent forever for P10,000 per month (unfurnished) and another one three blocks over not as nice was P15,000 BUT the odd thing here is unlike back home the landlords do zero cleaning before they sell/rent so people have to look beyond the unclean place and imagine what it could be like after a few days of cleaning. That was the case with our house before we bought it, it was a disaster having been empty with no upkeep (not good in a tropical climate) for almost two years after the owner moved to another island and many people I am sure who came to look kept driving by once they saw the condition of it - I recognized the potential of a double size corner lot and a solid structure. An American who rented nearby stopped by after we moved in and told me we paid way too much (P3 million) but we had been looking all over and this was not true for what we got. There are a few really nice places in our subdivision - my favorite I have learned is owned by someone from Singapore - they have a caretaker regularly maintaining their property, but he said the owner never rents it out. I think that is smart for a nice house as the rents are so low it might not be worth the hassle. Have a great week ahead in your part of the world! Amping Greg, Lindie and Cliffy🐶

Hello handsomevex coolsman @handsomevexcoolsman3437 Hope you are well. I am glad you like it - I really like the job they did on it as well. Sorry to be clear it is not our house. I am just taking pics of houses I see on my walks in the neighborhood. The builder is the guy who built the 8 native houses for rent and the 3-two level townhomes down the road from our subdivision. So this yellow house sits in the middle of his big lot. The nice thing about that yellow house you could drop that same design on any lot in the Province and have a nice comfortable house at low cost. Someone wrote and asked how much it cost - I tried to ask a lady I spoke to, but she was shy to answer - hopefully I will see the owner in the next while - they let me tour the native huts and later when the 3 townhomes were built he gave me tour of one - I did videos of both. Here is the link to the Townhome tour: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJC2gGuvdtWpa6csi=wHrdFeRB076TJ8nW Here is the link to the Native House tour: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eH-XfXiGf7adrrMsi=uoPkOK-hUSAHKhMz As I mentioned the yellow house sits right between these two projects, all on the same big lot. That is one benefit of being outside a subdivision you can get a much bigger lot. Amping take care, Greg

How do I retire in the Philippines.? I’m a retired vet from the US Air Force.

Hi Steven Barry @stevenbarry1998 Thank you for your service! It’s great to see retired veterans considering the Philippines - there are many in your shoes here. Retiring in the Philippines is awesome! Just get your visa sorted, and then it’s all about enjoying the sun, sea, and some delicious food! I highly recommend starting by coming here for a visit first - I came on 4 visits from 7 days to 30 days and toured around, as well as visited two other countries before I picked the Philippines. You can move here and start on a tourist visa and then if you are sure of your plan you can pick the Visa that suits you best. I started that way in 2018. Then in late 2019 I got the SRRV (Special Resident Retiree's Visa) as it offers benefits for retirees. Some jump right into the SRRV from their home country but I wasn’t comfortable doing that up to you. Just go directly to the government agency that handles the SRRV, PRA (Philippine Retirement Authority) www.pra.gov.ph/ - no need to click on the consulting companies that may come up first make sure you click on the PRA you don’t need a consultant to do it. Everything is set out on their site in English and their staff is very helpful. If you don’t get the SRRV once you are here for 59 days you need to get the ACR Card (Alien Certificate of Registration) - just have to pay for it, not expensive and can get benefits here like a drivers license and open a bank account, which makes moving money here really easy - bank to bank transfers as I explained in one of my videos - not a wire transfer like in the old days but direct from your bank app to your Philippines Bank Account - easy to set up, easy to use, cheap and fast movement. One other thing you can do is join Expat Facebook groups - but they are often painful and filled with people I would be surprised they are actually here - so many with negative comments - I would just say you are not stuck here - you came from somewhere so if you are so unhappy go somewhere else or go home - no one is a prisoner. The other thing I met a Canadian here last week who was doing 6 months here and 6 months in Canada - that could also be an attractive option for many. Also watch KZbin and Google - but be safe. The last tip don’t know if you need it is don’t rely on a dating site to meet someone in advance and if you do definitely do not send money in advance of meeting them. Just like every country there are scammers everywhere, often not from the country you think you are dealing with. Many Canadians and Americans (and everywhere) have been ripped off on Romance Scams for big money from scammers using high tech setups. Come for a visit and meet someone in person - very easy to do. Amping take care and good luck. Greg

Hi @Nuggetsjourney44 The same owner has 3 townhomes on his same property and that yellow house is new between the townhomes and a collection of nice native huts he built - so he built 3 very different styles. The link to the townhome video is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXXOZJV4m52fl5osi=7kvNCI97xw4IzowG The link to his native huts is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eH-XfXiGf7adrrMsi=LKiDBZCCjO9_rjBL Next time I see him I will ask the cost of building it. I like the simple design and could easily be replicated anywhere here on any size lot for a very cheap, but comfortable, living arrangement. I asked a woman there when I made the video but she didn't know the cost. Amping take care Greg

Hi @Ur_kuya_james I really appreciate your input! It’s always great to hear from viewers about locations they want to see. I’ll add that to my list! Do you have any idea of the name or where along Diversion Road it is - in Sibulan or Dumaguete? There is one in Sibulan with a blue roof called Charjer, is that it? Actually there are two Charjer locations one on the right in Sibulan (across from ZT Gas Station) and one further down the road on the left towards Dumaguete. Or 2Bil Fuel Station also has a blue roof, and is across from JD's Delight Bakeshop. Or are you thinking of somewhere else? Greg

Hi Georg Meyer @georgmeyer9104 Hope you are well. I agree with you 100% - there are a few of these older abandoned houses around and I always wonder what their story is - someone's forgotten dream of life in the Province. I could also live there - so much potential in that property and close to everything. After doing that one - I did a few more from my walks to show various examples of housing here in Negros Oriental. Just wanted to show a mix of styles - some are grass roofs but not all - there is a real mix of properties in the area. Amping Greg

Hi Dave Smith @davesmith9916 I appreciate your feedback! I'm glad you found the video interesting. I’ll be sure to explore the air conditioning costs in more detail soon! One thing I noticed it definitely keeps the heat out on hot days but I also noticed I like to have fresh air when there is a breeze (which we get here often) and then I have to decide whether to open them for the breeze or leave them closed to take advantage of the tint? Still working on that but when we go out shopping it is noticeably cooler in the house when we get back. Which makes it more comfortable and a fan is all that is needed where I may have put the AC on quicker in the past. It is funny for people who haven't been here - one guy said I was wrong because 2ply window is much better - he is right and in Canada there is 2 ply and 3 ply with the gas in between to keep out the cold (-50 to -60 in the winter, and +35 to +40 in the summer, where I am from) - but the cold is not a problem here and I have never seen them in 6 years here. And many places around here don't even have glass windows - so tint or 2ply windows aren't even a consideration for those people. The same is in the mountains, most houses don't have glass - the air is still warm in the daytime but feels cooler with a breeze and the night time is noticeably cooler - I have actually never seen a house with AC up there - a fan is definitely all you need. Amping Greg

Hi Harri Vennola @harrivennola8687 An excavator? That’s one way to make a grand entrance!
