You need seal tape not duct tape

do you put any thread lock on the nuts to stop them from getting loose? how tight do they have to be?
@allthethings1451
@allthethings1451 Күн бұрын
The nuts were locking nuts, so no need for threadlock. Can't remember the torque specs but pretty damn tight!

Hi, could you please post a video with the engine running smoothly vs misfiring? It is difficult to me to hear anything wrong with the engine without hearing what it should sound like when running well.
@allthethings1451
@allthethings1451 Күн бұрын
Hi! The reason I did not include a comparison is because it's actually hard to tell the difference over cellphone/computer audio. Super frustrating, as the difference is night and day in person, but unfortunately does not translate to the video. Even more noticeable than the sound though, is the vibration caused by the misfire. Even just sitting inside the car, the vibration is apparent and on acceleration it is even worse.

Looks good mate! What tool and disk did you use for the rough sanding at the start? I've tried sanding a large table with an orbital sander and it took ages. That sander look a lot more suited for that
@allthethings1451

Thank you! It is actually a normal rotary polisher. The fitting is the same as some sanders, so I just used velcro sanding discs on the polisher backing plate. Though not refined, it worked great for removing material, but oh wow did it make a mess. Actual proper sanders have an extraction for dust collection, definitely going that route in the future!

Thanks Marc, really enjoyed ypur videos. Suggest the next project be an Austin Healey 3000. Same engine and car type only a ‘little’ older. Good luck en see what it will be. Brgds, John (The Netherlands)

Glad you are enjoying the videos and thank you for the suggestion! I am not too clued up on classic cars like the Healy, they are also quite rare in South Africa but I will for sure keep an eye out!

I love the review and its a breath of fresh air to have review from my own country and I can relate better. I am really dreaming of owning either a BMW Z4, or Mazda MX5 or Porsche Boxter S 987. So to be informed by a fellow South African is really helpful.

The control arms look like a quite simple task on the Z4 without any major issues, I think mine are just starting to have the occasional clunk, the car is from 2006 and low mileage, but the rubber is probably starting to break down, think when they go I will do a swap of the springs and shock obsorbers for coil over shocks as I want to keep the car till I retire and beyond if the British Government do not tax me of the road financially in an attempt to get me to swap for an EV, if I can drive my 2007 E85 Z4 2.5i until it is 40 years old I will be happy :)
@allthethings1451
@allthethings1451 Ай бұрын
The control arms are easy to do (not sure about parts/labour pricing your side of the world, but probably cheaper than you would think). Also made a big difference in how the car feels, so I would recommend doing it anyway. Coil overs will probably make the car even more stiff than it already is, but I'm sure the handling would be insane with a proper spring setup! The emissions regulations your side are crazy! None of that here in SA (except a little emissions tax when you buy a new car). I hope it doesn't get worse and that you get to keep your Z4!

I live in the UK and managed to buy a 2007 E85 Z4 with a 2.5i engine with only 35k miles on the clock, a full BMW service history, and one elderly lady owner. I have had it now, for nearly 3 years and drive it short distances and longer on the weekend, it will need some attention but I can do most of it myself. I should do the roof motor modification to mine as that is a common problem too, but I do not park under trees etc. I still look at my car when we come home from family trips in my wife's Citreon C3 and say look at that beautiful car and I get a smile on my face :) I could have bought a 1-year-old car as I have done in the past costing me thousands more and then lose thousands more a few years down the line, if the Z4 costs me a few thousand as the years go by I will have had the pleasure of owning such a beautiful that is a fantastic car to drive with the same or possibly even less financial outlay. The electronic steering feels a little lacking at first until you get used to it and the car, it scared me at first, but it drives wherever I steer it with minimal drama. Sure, if you go too crazy in the end it is gonna bite ya! I love owning my Z4 and hopefully, the British Government will not financially tax me off the road in a bid to get me to swap for an EV
@allthethings1451
@allthethings1451 Ай бұрын
Wow 35k miles is nothing! It is a little gem and I am sure maintenance will be minimal. These m54 engines are generally super reliable and will last for many many years with regular maintenance, which is also easy to do. The devaluation argument is a strong one. I would also much rather drive a cheaper older car and pay for a little maintenance here and there, compared to having a downpayment on a newer car that loses most of its value quickly. I also think that cars like the z4 has probably already reached the lower part of the devaluation curve, and might even be worth more in a couple of years! I hope you get to keep yours and enjoy it for as long as you can.

Glad you got it sorted out. What were the symptoms of bad control arm bushings other than clunking? I just purchased a 2004 Z4 with 38k miles. I wouldn't expect my control arm bushings to be bad with so few miles, but the car has the worst tramlining of any vehicle I've ever driven. It does have run-flat tires.
@allthethings1451
@allthethings1451 2 ай бұрын
Thank you! The tramlining is better, but still noticeable. I also did wheel alignment after changing the control arms which definitely helped. My suspicion is that the run flats are the main culprit for this, though
@bresek874
@bresek874 Ай бұрын
I have the same problem with the tramlining. Bushes seems in good condition. I have two sized rims 225/40 front and 245/35 rear, so maybe it will help when i will fit 225/45 to all wheels. Goin to replace front arm bushing in the beginning of the next year as well tho.

@@bresek874 Tramlining = runflats - I had one of these when it was only 18 months old back in the day and the tramlining was terrible. Changed the tyres to non run-flat and totally went away ...
@shaunrobinson7123
@shaunrobinson7123 2 күн бұрын
I never got rid of the tramlining after replacing everything, I think it’s just the geometry of the car with low profile, wide tyres, along with the electric steering.

Dont forget to change the small o-rings on the oil filter housing stick. The small green ones :) + also had to swap out the disa-unit and the rubber boot. May upgrade the disa-unit to the one with a metal paddle and pin, so you resolve the risk with sucking in the pin and blowing the engine.

Thank you! I have heard about the Disa-upgrade, will see how the aftermarket one holds up. I also cleaned the idle control valve off-camera, wasn't too difficult and really made the car idle nice and smooth again.
