OH HELL YES! Something to consider that I've seen nobody talk about... In May of 2022 and May of 2023, PlayStation published two charts showing projected market size of Live Service vs Full Priced Games over the next 6 years. Not only does PlayStation believe that the Live Service market is growing at a pretty sizeable clip, but they also see that the single player market is shrinking at a pretty scary clip too. They do not see the single player market plateau. Both years, their market research forecasted atrophy in SP. PlayStation can't afford to quit on Live Service. The big fish gets nervous in an evaporating pond.

The biggest issue is that the market is not going to constantly grow like those companies expect. People choose a game and stick to it and when there are multiple live serve games the competition is fierce and those who love their game won't leave it. Unlike single player games where someone can buy it and play it or they can buy the game and wait a while to play it, such option is not possible for live service games as they will die eventually so the purchase is never justified if you won't play it.

You can't really afford to do business that way. Consider, the problem you described above (players stick with one game) has always been there since the birth of Live Service multiplayer. Ultima Online was successful in 1997 and it's players largely stuck with it as their one game. Now look at how insane it would have been to use your argument in 1997. The Live Service market has grown 100x (likely more) since 1997. All these companies know is that the single player games market is likely shrinking at an alarming rate and Live Service multiplayer is still growing at a steady clip. If games take 5 or 6 years to make, it's better to aim for a target that's getting larger rather than a target that's getting smaller. Star Wars Outlaws bombing commercially was, IMO, a bigger tell that the market is shifting than Concords colossal failure.

I think you could definitely be right about Outlaws, but I also think it's indicative of teams for SP games getting bloated and costly, while being less efficient and arguably more ineffective, which leads to an issue of the budgets ballooning while the market for them hasn't grown, as you say. But I think the market has shrunk, in large part, due to this type of development leading to less interesting games and less risky ideas out of a fear of needing to appeal to the largest market while also raking 6 years to make because of the inefficiency of development where hundreds of employees spend up to half their day in meetings trying to keep everyone on the same page. You might be right that SP inevitably dies by nature of a disappearing market but I'm curious to see some these long time devs leaving to create their own, more personal AA-AAA studios, come out with games and see if a return to reasonable budgets, more streamlined development, and the ability to take more risks can rebuild some of that market.

Also, I honestly don't believe Sony should cede that ground, definitely not so easily. But I want to see them find the right people and ideas to support this without digging into talent with interests outside of live service ideas. Thankfully, they seem to be doing that, it just takes time to see if it pans out for them. Concord and the now closed team unfortunately didn't, but that is one example with many to come! - B

Your friendly (annoying) neighborhood Live Service man here! I will never not be fascinated by how the single player gamer (not a derogatory term) views Live Service multiplayer. It's almost like we're speaking two entirely different languages. The "Horizon franchise fatigue" topic is basically irrelevant to multiplayer gamers. IP is not important to us. We didn't play PUBG because the IP fascinated us. We didn't play Fortnite because the IP fascinated us. We didn't play Rocket League because the IP fascinated us. IP is almost a meaningless topic in terms of how a game is going to perform. We engage with games for hundreds / thousands of hours because of the game mechanics and systems design, not because of characters and plot. I do enjoy listening to your perspective, because it's so foreign to me, but I can't wrap my head around the idea that 4 Horizon games in an 8 year span (one of which no one played - VR) is too much. Great show as usual. Keep it up!

I think IP CAN come into play, but I can definitely see what you mean. As you say, it's the difference between what we are looking for in a game and while some games definitely aim to straddle that line, like Destiny, MP primary games definitely are aiming for something completely different. But Call of Duty definitely carries more weight as a MP IP than something new like xDefiant, you know? - B

My opinion for the moment: The original Stream was 1080p 30 Fps on YT - and some examples in small windows instead of fullscreen, a very questionable presentation in terms of technical setup. Another problem was to show just old-very old games, that already look pretty damn good. The difference to the PS5 PRO Versions was hard to spot. There is not much contrast between Standard and PRO-version. Sharper a bit yeah....but who cares, if it looks already good. People have played that already, so it was not very exciting in terms of content. Additional they recognized that people prefer performance over pixels already - and they come along and add....more pixels. Well okay 120 Hz gaming is not really an option for most out of the gaming crowd anyways. But you see the point here. Pushing pixels is quick and easy, adding new details/visuals requires work from the developers. They need games, that do look okay but could have been better and then show how cool it would be on PS5 PRO. I look at Ark Ascended for example. Slightly blurry, only 30 FPS mode available....(but if you count on WildCard to get things done, than you are lost). Unfortunatley one thing qualifies for this category, but is not very popular: PSVR2. Reprojection is a huge turn off for newcomers, blurry ghosting movement and overall without Eyetracking-Support in many games, Resolution is mediocre at best. VR-Suffers much more than PS5-Flatgames from outdated Hardware and is thirsty for upgrades of any kind. Too bad Sony did not care for VR2 all along, PS5 PRO could have make it shine. So i am not convinced until Digital Foundry gets their hand on a PS5 PRO and say Hell yeah this is a great device. For new PS5-Customers...they can get the PS5 PRO for best results. For users that already have one, i think it is not really wort the money at the moment.

So, quick addendum, the original stream was 1080p 60fps, which is good as at the very least you could see the frame rate difference if you had it on that setting. But I like this response. I lamented that before this was announced they were unlikely to show how it benefits PSVR2. The upside is that there is no obvious reason developers can't utilize the extra power from Pro on VR2 titles, so I'm hoping the upcoming Metro and Alien games can see an improvement. Outside of that, I think it is a hard sell to get on streamed videos, and this will largely rely on word of mouth to expand outside of the people with disposable incomes who just want the extra power and don't have interests in PC. The real thing I think will have impact is allowing the PSSR to push games up to a higher effective resolution to allow easier ability to hit 60fps in non CPU limited games. Thanks for your thoughts and as someone who has enough Sony rewards points that need to be spent by January 1st, I'll be getting one and giving a fair take on if I find the value matches the price for me on an individual level or if it leaves me ultimately wanting! - Brett

@@NARTECH I hope PSSR is good enough to keep up with DLSS. In my eye this feature is the most important one. RT is nice, but usually you can turn it simply off and use traditional lightning which looks good enough for many users anyway. I think developers benfit from RT - they do not have to put too much work into lightning and it just works (Tod Howards words ;) - but in this case i believe it to be true) Okay the Stream must have been 60 Fps - weird i am pretty sure that DF mentioned that aswell. Do not get me wrong, i think you can have fun with the PS5 PRO....it is just....i see where this is leading and some people still tend to give feedback that this is somewhat okay. May be Sony should switch to the stand-business, safe a lot of money by avoiding to develop new games and become a market leader ;). I am very sceptical about this.....and i pray that they do not drop PSVR2 again....although, that is what i am afraid of and i think it is not an unwarranted thought. I have heard Sony's promises...but..am i convinced yet? Nah, not this time. Anyway, i have 4 apples here now i am going to eat them. Have a nice day and whatever happens - kepp a good mood. GL & HF

OMG, I'm just listening to this now! I love the pushback, but Chris (!) open thy eyes! We all agree that the media's number one goal is to generate clicks and not to paint a clear picture of complex situations / topics. The incentives are just unhealthy for the entire media landscape. Now Chris said a few things that drive me nuts here. I love listening to you two so please receive the following in a friendly tone. I love arguing with friends so this is not an attack on anyone, it's just my personality. 1. Chris says that Bungie missed revenue projections (key word PROJECTIONS) by 45%. I don't believe the media is lying. However, how many different revenue projections are in place at Bungie? I suspect a game as expensive as Destiny 2 probably has multiple revenue projections measuring different goals. Optimistic targets, expected targets, worst case scenario targets etc... A huge red flag went off for me when the media didn't dive further into specifics. Why wouldn't they add key context to illustrate how terrible this number was? Hmmmm... Now because I'm a nerd and I love talking about this, I averaged the monthly Steam CCU numbers from 2023, where Bungie missed projections by 45%, and compared it to their 2022 numbers. Here's the yearly averages... 2023: 64.67k CCU 2022: 64.91k CCU I believe Bungie had high projections for 2023, but the story wasn't that revenue dropped 45%, only that they missed PROJECTIONS by 45%. Business philosophy often encourages lofty goals to inspire solid, if smaller growth. 2. Chris says that Microsoft passed on buying Bungie because "They saw a high burn rate risk for the studio, which means in english, they saw Bungie was spending more money than they could make back." That's actually not correct. A high burn rate risk means the studio is spending a lot of money. It does not mean the studio is losing money. There's a GDC interview in 2022 when a Destiny 2 General Manager tells someone in the audience that "Destiny 2 is currently the most profitable it has ever been in its current state". The Microsoft passing on Bungie story also ignores the fact that Microsoft had a list of over 100 studios they considered buying, which came out during the FTC trial. Again, the media omits the list of 100 developers because it needs to paint a more dramatic picture for us to click on the story. 3. Chris says "I'm of the opinion that Jim Ryan got fired". - You do not fire an employee and let them work at your company for another 6 months. - You do not fire an employee and throw parties for them with their faces on cookies. - You do not let a fired employee sign massive deals with NCSOFT and take press photos with said employee. 4. Chris says that Pete Parsons knew the wheels were about to fall off in 2023 and that PlayStation didn't. However, if we look at the public player data, it doesn't appear that the wheels fell off. Lightfall was the best month in Destiny 2 history. The Final Shape was the 2nd best month in Destiny 2 history. There was only a miniscule player drop off from 2022 to 2023. 5. You guys also mentioned the story of a former Bungie employee saying Bungie faced insolvency without the PlayStation purchase. Media literacy 101 teaches you do not trust anonymous sources. This "well connected employee" (IGN) could be a former janitor, could be a Q and A tester, could be someone who developed schizophrenia for all we know. Liars and charlatans love using anonymous sources because they know the story can't be checked up on for validity. When a story lacks specificity, put your red flags up. I'm obsessed with this stuff because games media spread the Bungie brain drain narrative a few years back. "All the big talent left Bungie. They went to the Marathon team. Bungie is being run by suits, Destiny 2 is cooked etc..." The result of all that was The Final Shape, which is arguably the most well received piece of Destiny content in franchise history. Gentlemen, I will leave you with a Denzel Washington quote... "If you don't read the newspaper you're uniformed. If you do read the newspaper you're misinformed."

What did Bungie lie about? Chris seems to buy a lot of media FUD about Bungie but I don't see any validity to the claims. Hopefully I can clear a few things up... 1. Steam releases an end of year list highlighting their top grossing games every year called "Best of Steam". Guess how many times Destiny 2 landed in Steams top 10 highest grossing games since it launched in 2019? All 6 years. It will probably finish in their top 10 list for 2024 as well. 2. If we look at Steams monthly CCU charts that track all the way back to its Steam launch in October 2019, the most popular month was March 2023 (Lightfall) in which it averaged 135k CCU players. The second highest peak month? That would be June 2024 (The Final Shape). I'm sure Bungie sees some revenue metrics that tells them they need to shift off from Destiny 2 but I think it's probably safe to say that the trend is relatively soft. It's not spiking downwards like the media tries to portray. 3. In Pete Parsons "New Path for Bungie" blog post, he wrote "...in 2023 we began running in the red." This suggests that Bungie was running in the black (profit) essentially the entire time before that. Destiny 2 was so successful that it's 300 - 400 person Destiny team was able to support the growth of a much larger studio the entire time. Bungie grew to 1,300 (now 850) people because Destiny 2 was so wildly profitable. It was only in 2023, likely during it's low CCU months, that Destiny 2 was no longer generating enough profit to cover the studios larger expenses. 4. PlayStation employs a team of high priced M&A lawyers and employees. These people are at the top of their profession. They did their due diligence on Bungie before spending 3.6B dollars. I don't think gamers have any idea how thorough these people are with financials, goals, projections, performance history of a studio like Bungie before they pull the trigger. I enjoy listening to you guys but I'm not sure if you realize that the medias job is to generate clicks, not to reveal truth. The Bungie is dying, Bungie was almost bankrupt narrative just doesn't check out when you look into the details.

I'm generally more in agreement with you on this whole thing but wanted to give Chris the room to express why he bought what was being said. Without knowing specifics of Bungie as a company, all I really need to know is that Sony wouldn't make a move that expensive THAT impulsively. I will say that I can see a version of Bungie showing their best cards and maybe trying to not overly expose any areas they may have been weak, but I don't think that constitutes the same as "lying" or "Bungie's doom". It may have simply meant Bungie may have been one rocky release away from having to downsize to stay solvent, but that is far from the same narrative news sites want us to believe. All that said, I DO want to bring this comment to next episode and allow your rebuttal to give Chris a chance to defend his position or determine if he bought into it too much. Thought for the Until Dawn movie, if it was on Netflix instead of theaters, they could do the same thing they did on Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, where the viewer made choices that changed the movie they were watching. It's very much in line with how the Until Dawn games work. You could rewatch Bandersnatch and make different choices that changed the scenes you watched. It makes for a much larger production since it's like 4 movies instead of 1, but that's how they could do it.

@NARTECH I think matching the game is a mistake. Those that played the game may find flaws, and those that haven't, like you said, may not have a desire to play the game since they know the outcomes. Will be interesting to view Concords performance through the lense of Sea of Thieves. Rare was a 200 person studio in 2020 (wikipedia) and Sea of Thieves has historically averaged around 13k players on Steamcharts every month. Sea of Thieves has been called Rares most successful game by Rare leadership. Firewalk is a 150 person studio. If Concord can average 10k+ players on Steam, they'll likely have a hit on their hands. I have a feeling the media has this one wrong. I bet Concord becomes another W in PlayStations GAAS playbook.

@@NARTECH I love talking about this stuff! (I actually paid for the Digital Deluxe Version because I wanted to play it early. That's how obsessed with GAAS I am, lol) Obviously, I blew it on Concord. I really thought the game getting greenlit after PUBG and Fortnites success in 2017 would yield a more modern (open world) type multiplayer game. I was honestly shocked that it took inspiration from Overwatch. If I was in the room with the creative directors right now I'd tell them to do 4 things... 1. Go F2P and follow Valorants unlocking heroes with in game currency model. 2. Brainstorm how to improve the games horrible sense of progression and turn it into the best sense of progression in the genre. Winning (or losing) in Concord provides a nothing feeling. There's no real reward or interesting development if you perform well in the game. 3. Create one new Concord specific mode that feels unique. There has to be one idea kicking around in the Firewalk offices with a mode that feels truly fresh. The 6 current modes are all things we've seen to death over the last 25 years in gaming. Honestly though, I think they might just need to can it. I'm not sure if the game is salvageable at this point. That said, I do hope they get another crack at a new multiplayer game as there's a lot to like about Concord. It's polished, the moment to moment gameplay feels good, the visuals and animations are great. Looking forward to hear what you two say on the next podcast!

Don’t know why KZbin recommended me your podcast, I play on Xbox and JRPGs are my favorite genre. I listened to the Square Enix multiplat section. I appreciate when you clarify that we don’t really know with a lot of stuff on Xbox because they’re so secretive with their numbers. But I wanted to give one recent example. Mat Piscatella, a well known industry analyst for the US put out on twitter that Unicorn Overlord charted at #11 on Playstation in its release month and at #19 on Xbox Series. So what do we know from that? We know there’s 60 million PS5s and what like 120 million+ PS4 users? We don’t know exact numbers for Xbox Series consoles but it’s estimated around 20-25 million. And Unicorn Overlord only launched on X/S consoles. Not the previous generation for Xbox. So if Unicorn Overlord can reach #19 on Xbox with a fraction of the consoles out there. That shows there is a new hunger for the genre that wasn’t there before. And this was a paid game, no game pass. A game with a weird ass name. So yeah I think Final Fantasy will be worth it for Square. It will continue to sell best on PS and Nintendo but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth it for an Xbox version. What game pass has helped is introduce an entirely new group of people to JRPGs with the Persona games on GP. That’s why there is a market there. A new market. Anyways the console wars suck, I just wanted to give you my perspective with some figures from an analyst mixed in. Keep doing what you’re doing
@NARTECH
@NARTECH 8 ай бұрын
Not sure why it recommended it either, but I'm glad you decided to give us a listen! I'm sure that ultimately, the work to port across consoles will AT LEAST break even, so it's not a net loss. One thing I do think is happening is that JRPGs seem to be finding new audience and I think there are a few reasons for that. Partially, the console wars being at a fever pitch means that some fanboys are playing exclusive JRPG just to brag and MAYBE finding they like them more than they thought. I also agree that Yakuza, the Final Fantasy series, and Persona hitting GamePass has created a low stakes way for some potential fans to try the genre. If Unicorn Overlord landed there on Xbox it probably points to that, or that it's easier to climb the charts when less games have to be BOUGHT to be enjoyed in Xbox. It's probably a mixture of both, which isn't a bad thing for growing a genre, and not inherently a bad thing for Xbox. I just wish it were easier to understand Xbox's success or lack thereof, but seldom are console manufacturers that open! - Brett

Question: If PlayStations policy is to release Live Service multiplayer day and date on PC and remain exclusive with their single player games...doesn't that set the table for PlayStations lead studios to become Live Service oriented? In other words, their SP games will have to sell 2x more to maintain pace with their multiplayer studio equivalents. Doesn't it seem like that's knee capping the SP studios in the long run?
@NARTECH
@NARTECH 10 ай бұрын
I don't think it means they have to, if anything I think it means Sony needs to cultivate new studios that excel at Live Service, which seems to be the way they have gone in this endeavor for the most part! Considering their size and that they are a platform manufacturer who wants to bring in people to buy on their platform, it'd best serve them to be able to do both. I might say that would be a real point of possibility if PS single player games sold more on PC, but the numbers don't show that they sell anywhere near their console software numbers. Great example being Marvel's Spider-Man selling 1.5 million copies on PC where on PS4 alone it hit 20 million. So there's not a lot to prove that day 1 on PC would change that enough to equal needing to sell 2x the amount to keep pace!

If a dev wants my money they 1000% need to give me a long game. If a dev gave me some bullshit answer about "its concise and light on filler" i'd never buy anything they made. If you cutting out that filler resulted in a shortened total run time to under, say 40 hours then that means you weren't ready to release it. Go back and design and implement more core content and expand the game. If you're selling a 13 hour game that shit better cost $15. Nothing wrong with firing workers if you don't need em. It's just fake moral outrage at "big greedy companies". Also 60 FPS AND max or close to max graphics are a MUST for me. I'm mainly a pc player. I'll say, on the game length subject, IF your game is going to be 40 hours or 60 hours or what have you, I'd be fine with that IF it was obvious that the game had the content in there for a reason. While I've not played the Persona games, people often seem to think their 60-100 hour runtime is used for for storytelling and they've always been that way. It just seems a lot of series have added to runtime without a compelling reason to outside of the expectation that a AAA game be 30+ hours. Moving over to PS5 Pro, I'd really hope that they end up with a machine that can consistently hit 60fps on every game at a much higher resolution. You will never have a right to digital game and I'll tell you why. Digital games are not like summons in Naruto where they just exist in this alternate universe until needed. They reside on servers, in a data center that a game maker like sony etc would have to continue to lease or maintain in perpetuity. So when people talk about "we need legislation" its usually the very young or the very ignorant on how legislation (in the U.S) gets passed. There is one thing that both parties agree on is that they tend to not want to put (what they consider) undue burden on companies. Sowhen any legislation is discussed, sony, nintendo, microsoft apple etc will go to congress and CORRECTLY be like what you're asking us to do is to keep every ps5, ps6, ps7, ps8 etc. game on up and running servers for what is in reality forever. They will basically ask do you know how unreasonable that is from a financial and logistical standpoint, and it will likely get nowhere. No the hosts and other viewers might respond with a bunch of "should" language "the government "should disregard those cost to the companies and make them do it anyway", "the companies have lots of money, they should just do the right thing and eat the cost.". Those are should statements. What WILL happen is that the government will decline to force them to do so, or it will have limits like "must be able to access digital games on the previous console for 10 years after the new console releases. So let me reiterate, we will never, ever ever ever get full digital ownership.

Like I said, I don't really think the government SHOULD (haha) be involved and I've long been a fan of the industry trying to self regulate to benefit both parties. In my scenario, there are ways to account for what you say. You buy it, and you download it, and you have access to it with a license that is now a license with no expiry. If the game is still on a server, you can re-download. Once it isn't, it becomes the same as when they stop printing disks. If you have it on your hard drive, it's yours. If the drive breaks before you can transfer it off, it's the same as a disk becoming unusable. In regards to ability to treat it as a good, their servers are tied in. As a service charge for allowing the transfer of a license, they can put some sort of fee behind it similar to eBay. They make 10% of the price you sell it for. I want the government out of as many things as possible, whereas Joe feels differently. That's okay, but the ONLY reason digital rights have been treated as they have is because we allowed it. It can be just as limited a good as anything else and treated as such. Either way, thanks for your input and information. Even if we disagree in areas, I appreciate the willingness to state your opinion on the matter and back why you landed there. It does allow us to picture this from another angle which can help shape where we continuously land on the issue. - Brett

What you proposed sounds like what we already have. Games I bought on PS3 are still there for me to download on a PS3. So not sure how that system would be any major change. That said I wanna pick a fight with your guest co host. Around hour and forty five min mark he was talking about how he just wants to just sit back on a couch and not have to be at a desk to play games. This is just wrong and I'm tired of people.on gaming podcast parroting it. This is what you need in order to play ps on a couch. A PlayStation, an HDMI cable going from console to TV, a power cable going from PlayStation to wall outlet and a controller. This is what you need in order to play PC on a couch. A PC, HDMI cable, power cable and controller. Same as ps. The only other thing you need is one of those small lap keyboards with the touch pad to move around windows and type if you play mmos and such. That kb is about as length of a sheet of notebook paper and uses a wireless USB plug the size of a dime. So unless plugging in a dime sized USB dongle and having a smaller than sheet of paper sized kb near you is some major hindrance, PC couch gaming is just as doable and has been for well over a decade. This is coming from somebody with a $2k PC hooked up to a 65 inch living room TV. Not sure how often you talk to him but next time you hit him up, ask him to stop spreading false info. Take care.

The important parts it adds are first, a license that doesn't have to be annually 'renewed' against the server. This means if they close the PS3 server, my digital games don't become unplayable in a year. Second, it adds the ability to transfer your license to someone else for whatever reason. Selling it, lending it, etc... and still gives the platform holder a means of profiting off transactions involving that, but giving us at the least MORE ownership than we currently enjoy. As for your remarks of couch PC gaming being viable, you are absolutely correct. I tend to tell people I play console more because I want to sit on my couch, but add in that my PC (3060TI/Ryzen 5) is in my studio for music production/podcast production, so the only way to play couch on PC would be to buy another PC to put in my gaming room, which is more costly than I personally want when I already have a capable PC. I'll let Joe know you had a bone to pick with his reasoning 👌

Great discussion. I'd like to add to 11:05 "What is Helldivers 2 doing different?" by recommending the book titled Tribe by Sebastian Junger. In that book, the author details examples throughout human history where people naturally gravitate towards being integral members of small tribes despite life being more difficult in those tribes. Humans like difficulty in combination with being an integral member of a team navigating that difficulty. Helldivers 2 supports his hypothesis.

I'll leave a comment here that i left on a live podcast that I usually comment on. The hockey part might not apply to you. On the topic of WB doubling down on live service games I think they are correct in doing so. Lots of articles and podcasts have been focusing on Suicide Squad flopping and Hogwart being a top selling game as proof that studios should focus more on single player experiences instead of live service games. What they tend to (purposely) ignore is that the live service game in question was based on d list DC comic villains that most folks don't have an affinity for vs a game based around one of the most powerful IP in the world. Had Rocksteady created a single player Suicide Squad game that had the quality of Arkham City and the other studio made a middling live service Harry Potter game, the HP would have STILL sold gangbusters and generated far more overall revenue. While devs and publishers should still make big time single player games, the smart move is to have the majority of your resources dedicated to making perpetual income games. While there will certainly be outliers, I think an average performing live service will bring in more money than a well made, well regarded single player game. You're a hockey guy so i'll put it like this. I'd rather have a guy that can get me a hat trick or better on any given night even if he has cold stretches vs a guy who is more consistent but is only ever going to light the lamp (is that what yall say?) once in any given game.

I think we agree more than you might think. In the show, we say that Hogwarts would have likely still sold well even if it wasn't as good as it is. I don't think it would have sold AS well, but still well enough. I also think that a Live Service game from WB or Rocksteady didn't have to inherently be bad, and I can see a good one being made. I think there was a hope that The Suicide Squad movies would've made them a bigger pull for casuals since it is more known now than it was. I'm only surprised because I think a healthy mix of both shows to be the ideal venture forward, but they present this as though they are leaving single-player games behind nearly entirely in favor of mobile/f2p/and live service games despite a history of VERY well selling and highly regarded SP games. My hope is that in the next 5 years we realize that this was poorly communicated and that they still intend to dip into the familiar and successful nature of more curated single player games while diversifying into markets with more overall continual monetization potential. As I said in another comment though, WB has had a rough time specifically with games that they've seemingly tried to make as broadly accessible as possible like SS and Gotham Knights in recent years. If they learn from that, they'll be fine. As the Helldivers 2 devs motto goes: "A game for everyone is a game for no one."
@tical2399

@@NARTECH We seem to agree that there should be a mix but disagree on what that mix should be. You said a healthy mix so that to mean 50/50 or somewhere around there. I feel that from a business standpoint it should be skewed 75/25 in favor of live service or better. Not that I have some deep love for LS, I just understand that it's the smart move.
@NARTECH
@NARTECH 11 ай бұрын
My real take on healthy mix is somewhere in line with a 60/40, with the 60% being games in the F2P, Mobile, LS side. Same as you, not because that 60% would benefit me or the games I tend to enjoy, but because I do understand it's a business. But those categories are still as volatile as the rest of the AAA space, so better curating the 40% and really letting them exist without trying to find ways to extra monetize can lead to more consistent results from that 40% to better fund the chance at higher earning games in the 60%. Time will certainly tell.

1:35:30 - This is such a huge point because I hear it all the time. The Batman Arkham trilogy was NOT a rousing success. Each game sold around 6 million units and each game cost significantly more than the last. WB jumped off the trilogy before costs hit the brick wall of profitability. I love me some Live Service discussion!
@NARTECH
@NARTECH 11 ай бұрын
Let's back up a second! Arkham Asylum sold around 9.5 million units and Arkham City sold 12.5 million within the first year IIRC. Now Origins and Knight both sold around 7 million units as well, which is certainly less while Knight cost more than City to make. Origins was a cheaper title to develop due to reusing map and not vastly increasing scale or production value. So, with that in mind, I think it is very difficult to say that as a whole the series was a rousing success monetarily and was held in high esteem among critics and gamers alike. You COULD be right that following with another could've finally broke to being a disappointment in sales expectations, that's true. And we do give that it's not inherent that a live service game was going to not do well, but Suicide Squad certainly wasn't it, and has felt that way since first gameplay reveal. It's certainly surprising to see this talk of the future, primarily because of how it was communicated. They have a history of single players games that have done fantastic of not bare minimum well. The only games that seem to have underperformed for them have mostly been games that tried to more.broadly appeal to the market in some capacity, like Suicide Squad and Gotham Knights. It still makes sense to chase that market as they have the means to, but leaning almost entirely into that feels irresponsible outside looking in. With all that said, I know you and I have a different viewpoint on games as a service titles, but I really think we should've better specified that this is weird specifically because WB has had an issue with adjusting games to try to more broadly appeal. In the words of the excellent Helldivers 2 team: "A game for everyone is a game for no one."

@@NARTECH You are 100% right. The Batman Tetralogy (real word!) was no doubt successful. However, I think back to a Tim Sweeney interview (I think?) where he talked about selling Gears of War back to Microsoft and moving on from the franchise. He said all 3 games sold well, but the budgets were increasing rapidly and the sales ceiling was not. He explained that it didn't take a math genius to project that trend out over the next 10+ years. To me, it seems clear Epic Games was the canary in the coalmine. PlayStation is becoming Live Service focused. WB is becoming Live Service focused. Ubisoft, EA, Activision Blizzard are all already Live Service focused. But this is my point...if all the most historically successful publishers are moving into Live Service then don't we have to question what we as gamers see? They have access to detailed analytics, we do not. If they're looking at the numbers and coming to the same conclusion...don't we have to say "I bet those numbers are pretty telling." I also think it's likely these companies aren't learning from their own games exclusively. They're looking at games like Helldivers 2 and going "We should have done that." I just bristle at the notion that these CEOs are foolish and out of touch when, taken as a whole, they're some of the brightest, hardest working, most successful CEOs in the entertainment sector.
@NARTECH
@NARTECH 11 ай бұрын
I recall that Tim Sweeney discussion! The truth is almost certainly that they have good data to look at, but I think what's happening at a business level is this: Single player games require far more ability to accurately read the market and have no real extra way of monetizing once on the market. So if you invest heavy and are wrong, it's just a big miss. Look at live service games and even if they miss with the majority of the market, if you can catch enough people and get a couple whales alongside it, then even a game that was a disappointment in individual sales or player count has a chance to be financially successful. What this feels like is that making games for the good of the many is being forsaken for making sure you have an avenue to have something that feels less volatile. Which is fair but incredibly unfortunate. You say they are looking at other publishers/devs, which is absolutely true, and as jaded as this may sound, I feel pretty confident in saying WB and most other publishers wouldn't have put out a game like Helldivers with the structure and format it has for its extra monetization, but I'd LOVE to be wrong on that. With all that in mind, I'll say this: If the numbers clearly paint a picture of a gaming landscape that wants games to be overwhelmingly live service, then that unfortunately means that the industry is moving past my primary interests in the hobby and I fear that means I'll have less and less to play per year. Not only because I have a limited bandwidth for LS as is, but also as Shawn Layden says, I'm no longer 'time rich and money poor' but rather 'time poor and money rich'. I've really enjoyed this little dialogue and absolutely enjoy getting to hear and see another viewpoint on this topic, so thank you for always engaging when you have something to say! - Brett

Even Colin Moriarty (Sacred Symbols), who historically despises multiplayer, is on record saying he's been enjoying Helldivers 2. If they're willing to spend 60% of their budget on GAAS they must be seeing something awfully convincing. Here's my question: When do you reassess the claim? If Concord pops off later this year, will you revisit the discussion or will it take more than that? Cheers! BigBox

I'll be very much happy to revisit it if Sony manages another successful one out of the gate, much like we are seeing here. So if it is Concord or Fairgame$ first, we'll get a glimpse at how the market reacts and how Sony approaches continuing that when developed in house. With that in mind, anecdotally, Destiny 2 has been losing many players, and I've personally seen many of my old D2 clan jumping to Helldivers 2. If that stays and Destiny 2 sees lower player base, I feel it might be a point towards my original claim in that for a new one to come up, another has to fall. I'm sure PlayStation doesn't want Helldivers to do well at the cost of Destiny 2. Something to think about.
@bigbox1431
@bigbox1431 11 ай бұрын
@@NARTECH Only because I'm a nerd with this topic... I think your claim that new GAAS titles pull players away from older GAAS titles is true. However, just because that happens doesn't mean the market is saturated. Consider... 1. Destiny 2 is already a smash success. The game helped grow Bungie into a 1,400 employee behemoth. If the entire Destiny 2 population leaves for Helldivers 2, then the market supported both games. GAAS titles are NOT "forever games". 99% of the people who play Destiny, Fortnite, League of Legends etc...play those games for less than 1,000 hours. Most people only stay with a game for 3 months - 3 years. It's an incredibly small population who stay with a game longer than that. PlayStations new GAAS titles are going to be incredibly intriguing to Fortnite and Rainbow Six Seige players. 2. GAAS games are doing a better and better job of catering to different player types and they're becoming more social as well. Look at early Quake + Unreal Tournament. Fast twitch multiplayer games that didn't encourage easy communication. Todays multiplayer games like GTA and Fortnite are more conducive to talking and they allow a wider variety of players to engage with them. Now consider friend groups IRL. A group of 4 - 6 friends is going to differ significantly in terms of skill level and playstyle preference. The odds of all 6 enjoying a fast twitch game like Quake is low. Newer games are starting to understand that if they can keep that friend group connected, they'll make more money. It's a fascinating topic. You two put on a great show. The future is very exciting!

I think you guys get a few fundamental things wrong about Live Service: 1. You suggest the Live Service market is capped. "The pie is only so big". In reality, there's a lot of evidence showing that the Live Service market is growing bigger and bigger each year. It's not a pie yet. The crust is still being made and the baker is throwing more and more ingredients in to increase the size of the pie. 2. You suggest PlayStation is backing out of Live Service to some degree. Interim CEO Hiroki Titoki just said 3 weeks ago that PlayStations Live Service strategy in the mid to long term remains unchanged. He literally used those words. About a week later, PlayStation signed a partnership deal with GAAS maker NCSoft. In reality, PlayStation delayed 6 Live Live Service games out of FY2025...which means they're spending more resources on those 6 titles. 3. You say there's only 5 or 6 evergreen games. You only need to check Steamcharts, XBL Most Played, and Most Popular PlayStation games to see how wrong that is. 4. You say no one believes half of PlayStations Live Service games are going to bring real return on investment. I think 9 or 10 will be successful. Bungie and PlayStation are constantly reviewing their Live Service portfolio and cutting the weakest titles. I think PlayStation is very confident in their Live Service games that make it to market.

Many upcoming games in 2024 are slated for both PS4 and PS5 (various publishers). From the looks of it, there is no incentive to go to PS5 only. PS4 has 117 million consoles sold, PS5 has 46.6 million. PS5 may never exceed the sales figure of PS4, just like none of the latest consoles will dethrone PS2. But at some point, publishers will stop producing content for the previous generation, right? Maybe. Or will we see a PS6 arrive, while people are still buying PS4 content. Who knows?
