24:00 Really, REALLY, bad source research here. We've dealt with Smith for years up here. For two decades Smith has been an anti-gun advocate and has churned out cookie cutter pro-spray/anti-gun "research artciles". He is absolutely NOT an expert on the subject, but an extremely biased source.

Humans continually under estimate wild life. A man was killed by a swan years ago. A male swan will attack and attack and attack and if you are in the water, it attacks by pushing you under the water repeatedly and you cannot get away very easily, it's nearly impossible to fight back in that circumstance. So what on earth makes humans think they are a match for wild life? In many cases you are not a fighting match and especially not for a grizzly bear.

If you are scared in the wilderness don't be there. Listen to your senses. Here in Canada in hunter training bear spray is ineffective against grizzly bears. Carry a long gun not a pistol. Pistols are pea shooters. And in wolf country carry a machine gun because hunters have died running out of bullets being attacked by a pack of wolves. I fear for the public spreading this animal loving message. Love your pets but grizzly bears and other wild animals are not going to judge you like he are she has a good heart is kind and deserves to live. No they will kill you and carry on with the day.

90%! 98%! Wow - that's pretty good! Unless you are in the 10% or the 2%; then, it's REALLY bad, because you are dead. The video shows spray density out to about 10 feet; if you are 10 feet away from a charging bear, you're his lunch. It doesn't make the bear drop on the ground and stop - in fact, there may be nothing that will do that. Your life may already be lost. But bullets work when it's cold. And don't lose their propellant from leakage after 3 years. In the second or two before you are pounced on, you do not have the time to employ two defenses; spraying, then shooting is NOT an option you should rely on as a strategy. Bear spray is effective from 10 feet; if you are trained - and if you go into bear country, you are INSANE if you do not train; with a gun, you should be effective at triple that range. Distance is life. You must pick the ONE defense that is the MOST effective. And do not rely on statistics, because there is no way to count the number of bear spray failures accurately - the users were eaten. And statistics often reflect the agenda of the publisher rather than reality. You do not pick the lesser of two weapons with which to go to war if you are sane. All militaries are in constant, rabid, frenzied, competition to improve the lethality of their weapons over those of their enemy. WHY? To LIVE. They don't say: "well, this is effective 90% of the time, so it's good enough. The lack of rationality in that statement is laughable. And so is bear spray as a primary choice for bear defense.

It certainly is possible for dogs to help. But just their presence is likely to cause a problem. I’m glad you are ok, and that your dog was able to help. There are many, many, many other people who were not as fortunate.

When you try and 'run' away from a bear, 'shoot' a bear, 'fight off' a bear, or use 'pepper spray' you like almost all people don't have control of the situation and might be dead meat. The key is to have enough inner confidence and swagger that you know a bear isn't going to attack you in the first place: You aren't a threat to the bear and you don't look like 'prey' to the bear. Most people can't claim this: Most people DO look like threats or prey to bears or other animals. They don't understand nature or are sufficiently confident to be in control of a situation so that wildlife simply doesn't attack them. I feel I'm a huge exception and that wildlife won't attack me for a variety of reasons... I have an 'inner' and 'innate' something that most people by far lack...

There are times when bear spray is not very effective. Bear sprays are considered a pesticide by the U.S. government and must be registered with the EPA. In doing so, the government requires that bear spray can contain no more than 1 - 2% O.C. ( oleoresin capsicum) which is a natural oil found in plants, including cayenne peppers and chillies. The ingredient that causes the burning sensation. This makes bear spray relatively weak. Compare 2% bear spray to a good pepper spray. Those can be as strong as 23% O.C. and some even stronger. Unfortunately, most pepper sprays typically only shoot about 6-12 feet. Some more, some less. A grizzly can travel 12 feet in less than a second at full charge. Bear spray is made to shoot about 25-30 feet and usually in a large fog pattern. Pepper spray's lack the distance for bear IMO. If you get a chance to have a look at a container of bear spray check the label. You'll see it contains no more than 2% O.C Another problem with bear spray is when it's windy. The spray may not go where you're intending it to go. Especially if the wind is blowing directly at or even in the direction of the person using the bear spray. If the wind blows the spray at you it can end up burning the eyes and throat of the person trying to defend against the bear, which may temporarily disable the person. That could make it very hard to open your eyes or breathe and to see the bear and defend yourself. Not a good thing if a dangerous bear is coming at you. Bear spray is under pressure and sometimes does not work well at elevations over 7000 feet. Bear spray *does* seem to work against bears that are just curious or maybe only giving a false charge. Bear spray does *not* work as well against a bear that is guarding a kill, especially if you unknowingly get between the bear and it's food source, or if a mother bear feels that you're a threat to her cubs, even if you're not close to the cubs, or if you accidentally happen to surprise a bear. Especially a sleeping bear. I know there are people that for whatever reason are not comfortable with firearms or maybe don't feel very proficient with one. If that's you and there's no way you see yourself carrying a firearm then absolutely carry bear spray. It won't always work in every situation, but it is better than not having anything. I have friends in Alaska. They tell me that most people (residents) don't bother with bear spray, preferring to carry a rifle, shotgun with slugs, or a large caliber handgun with heavy, hard-cast bullets. A good option in bear country would be to carry both a firearm and bear spray. If you carry a firearm practice with it. A lot. Make noise when you hike. Most bears will turn and leave when they hear people. Oh, and don't hike alone.

How could they be experts and not ARMED with proper weapons and canister sprays? No way in hell should someone be out in Bear country without a backup plan. Sure, you might still die in an attack but you'd have a chance and not have to be eaten alive. Just Foolish. OH - just realized this is in commie Canada, never mind.

There was another Grizzly bear attack here in Squamish BC on May 10. The woman’s identity withheld. But she was walking her *unleashed* dog which stumbled across a pair of grizzly cubs. Subsequently bringing out the sow from the brush! The woman was bitten before the sow decided to retreat back into the bush.

🤦🏾‍♂️ If he was so "SUCCESSFULLY" able to spray the bear in the face, how was he still attacked TWICE!! That's the most contradicting statement I've heard in a while. That doesn't sound "successful" by any means. Successful is spraying the bear in the face and she leaves you alone. Tell the story, but don't exaggerate the potency of that bear spray.

Your comment suggests you haven’t watched the full video. No one is exaggerating the potency of bear spray. Todd Orr’s story perfectly illustrates how easily the internet learns the wrong lessons. The second attack was a freak incident. Totally random, and has obscured the successes evident in Todd’s story. Watch the full video for the important context ignored by the internet. I’m not interested is politics. I’m concerned with what is ethical and right. I’ve shared my feelings regarding Mr Roberts’s behavior. But he is a distraction. His behavior has demonstrated clearly that our laws are not sufficient to protect wildlife from sadism. Correcting that oversight should be our focus.

The evidence is actually stronger that black bears attack more when dogs are present. But I expect that has more to do with black bear distribution. Black bears have a wider range, and naturally have more opportunities to clash with dogs.

The whole bear spray vs gun is a valid argument. I carry both just in case. My closest encounter was a bear running between me and my dog from 30 feet away and it was as freaked out as both of us. It was literally a blur. Thank goodness it was a black bear. My dog (had husky and half pit bull terrier) looked at me like WTF was that? No possibility of pulling out gun or spray. That bear belonged in the bear olympics for the fastest 100 yard dash. We were both within two feet of him when he ran between us and the fire pit. Fun times
