As per research articles, it is documented that tap root can go till 20ft deep or more with such effective tap root system gives protection for drought resistance, cyclone protection and also self sustaining capabilities to be able look for water and nutritional needs in the absence of rain or manual irrigation and manual intervention for application of fertilization needs and this will increase longevity of the plants and also increase the commercial yield as well. However in grafts, the tap root is always coiled due to long presence in such a small pouches and if planted as is, then the plant depends entirely only on lateral root system and the coiled root won't go further and remain coiled or truncated. That means such grafts without tap root and only lateral roots will depend for fertilizer and water and nutritional needs only on the superficial top layer of the soil and in the absence of these, it will lead to lower yield, lower age (shorter life), susceptible to cyclones and droughts. To overcome this, in India experts advise to plant directly a seed (or one one both sides of the graft) adjacent to the grafted plants while planting at a space of 4 inches or 6 inches and later once the seedling plants attain a suitable thickness to be able to graft, they choose the best seedlings (or choose both on each sides) and do approach grafting to the coiled graft. This gives option to exchange the coiled root to an healthy tap root of the seedlings, since the seed is directly planted, it goes deeper and deeper without any root coiling phenomenon along with lateral roots as necessary. Once the grafting union is set and hardened, either all three roots can be left as is for the plant only to automatically choose the dominant tap root system on its own, or induce a mild wound in the root which is weaker (for example the original coiled root of the graft) at three or more different iterations such that the plant automatically tried to choose the other dominant root system and shed the weaker one. Once this is completed one can cut the weaker root altogether as well or leave it as a secondary root system.

I feed the forage cultivar to my horses. Have done so for many years. I get it direct from the farm and the farmers use this as their ground cover at home. After all, who has time for mowing grass when you’re too busy working the fields 😂. It is a pretty and practical way to maintain your lawn. I wouldn’t mind covering my lawn in perennial peanut.

I’ve never had the Indian jujube but I grow the Li and Lang varieties in N W Arkansas. This is Zone 6 and can get down to -10*F. The trees are prolific. They are sweet and crunchy but I think that the sugars concentrate and the fruit is at it’s best dried. I process the fruit by piercing with a fork and then simmering in a pot for 15 minutes. I add some lemon juice and allow the fruit to cool in the covered pot overnight. I pit the fruit and dehydrate. Delightful as a date substitute.
