I had a Pickering this year that had some bizarre flavors in in like motor oil aviation fuel and the bitter citrus you described, I guess every fruit is a little different, must be similar compounds that cause that in the Odorata. Interesting stuff.

An off type is just another form or a mutation of a given variety. It can arise as a sport, or through a self fertilized embryo and as a mutation in a nucellar embryo.

Mango>kuini/kuinen>macang. Kuinen cannot be eaten over ripe. The volatile will be too strong. Macang/bacang (M foetida) is also nice but more suited for hot sauce/sambal. Macang smells stronger. There is a proverb which describes faraway relations as "smelling of bacang/macang".
