I love her as a musician but her ideology is completely stupid lol. It's basically just reactionary to whatever the status quo is. I guess in essence that is what being punk means but it's still kinda stupid.

This is putting into words a thing I've been mulling over in my head for a while now. As an example, growing up, tattoos and piercings and all that were very much outside the mainstream and it felt cool and dangerous to hang out in tattoo parlors or whatever and I wanted to be covered in tattoos as a 16 year old in high school. Everybody in that scene was an outsider in one way or another and they were interesting and rad folks. But now even the police are walking around with full sleeves and your tax accountant has her ears gauged. It's cool that people aren't getting shit for how they look (wrt certain body mods anyways) but it just doesn't feel very interesting anymore, especially since a lot of these people were the very assholes giving people grief for how they looked or dressed. The squares came in and took over this sub-cultural signifier and now they all look like how my friends and I used to look and I don't want to hang out with squares just because they have a dragon tattoo or whatever.

She still sounds quite confused about how to act.

*The era was very formative and was the sole reason it gave one of the best women to ever emerge from the scene. She would go on to front and sing for Culture Club*

I was a little kid in late 70s but I thought it was strange too see the punk girls. Was just a bit of fun obviously. The 80s goth girls were a bit stranger tbh.

Middle class hippies, like nearly every "punk" band. The sex pistols were a put together boy band, whilst the clash sung about white riot, art students, privately educated son of a diplomat trying to be working class, the whole punk thing was a con.

I'm sure The Adverts would have played my hometown in Devon back in the day, would love to have seen them, but I only would have been about 11 years old! Gaye wrote great basslines used to try and work them out on my Hondo Jazz copy. Great teenage memories.
